its not competition goodfellas was by far the best movie ever. like jenny said I have watched it over a thousand times and each time i watch it its like watching it for the first time

Another one in Pulp Fiction is the long take following Jules and Vincent along the corridor, to the apartment door, round the corner and then back to the door. Tarantino was massively inspired by Scorcese, of course, and being the arch cinematic postmodern magpie would probably be the first to admit it. The Copacabana scene in Goodfellas is rightfully one of the most celebrated shots in cinematic history, a moment that even people with no technical understanding of film can point to. It's a perfect example of style complementing subtext: we are visually entering into this glamorous world of back-door privilege from the outside, drawn into it and swept off our feet by it. This single shot perfectly illustrates the appeal of a life of crime.

Although, for the long take as the cinematic equivalent of the guitar solo, I have to say I prefer this one:

i could tell you from the md's mouth that the music selection was used to narrate the change in time. The very fact that period music was uses original music is pretty fucking obvious. Yes scorcese picked music from the year that was happening in gf but it was more to do with the character in question.. The usage of voice overs is also a technique over used in these types of films as it is in casino. But you seem to find robocop and judge dread the holy grail of film making so I don't think we will see eye to eye. I think perhaps you are slightly myopic when it comes to music, film and art in general. Your ability to be an ass is unquestionably impressive.

I'd say Casino cause that's the one I saw more times. Goodfellas were good and all, but De Niro wasn't the main character

If long tracking, cut-free shots is what you dig, check out just about any movie with Brian De Palma behind the camera. He loves to let scenes play out organically. I'm sure Tarantino caught quite a bit of inspiration from De Palma's works (along with Scorsese, no doubt).

It wasn't well received by critics or many movie-goers, but Mission to Mars is a good example...a lot of scenes let the audience dwell on the progression of the events happening, rather than resorting to hyperkinetic editing in order to build some sense of adrenaline or excitement.


Goodfellas wins, by the way, but Casino definitely deserves its own recognition for reasons that don't even need to be said. Both movies are pure Scorsese right down to their cores.

but i always liked casino more. it felt like goodfellas 2.0...the violence, the tragedy, everything felt one-upped to me.

I know I bang on about this a lot, but I managed to see Robocop at a local independent cinema last night and noticed for the first time a fantastic long take: where we enter the boardroom with Bob Morten and Johnson, pick up Dick Jones and the Old Man coming the other way, follow them to their seats and pull back to bring the whole room into shot and stop behind the model of Delta City. Not as ostentatious a shot as the ones mentioned so far in this thread, but still brilliantly executed.

fuck my memory is shit. i totally forgot robocop's scene in goodfellas.

It's a rare European recut by Paul Verhoeven. The running time is considerably shorter, due to a crucial scene where Robocop enters the Copacabana club and guns down the entire mafia.
