Orbax... Loved your post !

I am doing the martail art basically for the fun of it... maybe the Acrobatics even for the ladies , but i really don't think of it as self defence / want to hit someone better....

I dont like fighting

ive been thinking about getting into some type of filipino ma's (kali or arnis)basically because its in my blood but i havent gotten around to it and i do have some karate experience. What appeals to me about filipino ma's is its a more street fighting art its designed for survival its not as fancy tae kwan do or other arts but they do teach stick/knife fighting first which is damn cool!!

Man, i can post pages and pages on this subject. :P

I'll do this later...

those are the styles i've done. most recent two being wing chun and chi-to ryu, in which i just got my first degree black this past may.

i've been doing this stuff my whole life. eventually you realize that you're not learning how to fight in a certain style, but you're learning how to fight. that's why i can't help but laugh at TKD kids that think they could flashkick someone in a bar brawl.

oh, btw, kung fu (gung fu), didn't originate in china. bodhidharma taught the basic movements of martial arts to what would become the shaolin somewhere between 420 and 520 ad.

the spelling of ving tsun, or wing chun, or wing tsun, is dependant on which lineage of "wing chun" you're talking about. Moy Yat, using Ving Tsun, and William Cheung using Wing Tsun. "Wing Chun" is the accepted general western translation. Doesn't mean ving tsun is any more chinese than wing chun. :P

and kung-fu did not originate from bodhidharma introducing movements into the shaolin temple. Kung fu has been around LONG before the shaolin temple. Although Shaolin did give birth to many of the popular and famous styles of kung fu, martial arts has been around in China long before from secular and military sources.

I've had some training in Kali/Arnis/Eskrima, it was fun. However, alot of people I know who train develop shoulder problems later on in life, I guess due to some of the movements involved.

Oh, and to all of you who want to find the Martial Art that's just about raw- real - street fighting...... so you can kick someone's ass....

then you're really missing the point of Martial Arts. A complete Martial Art, along with attack and defence techniques, includes philosophy, health training, internal training, ethics, traditions, healing/medicine, and aesthetic/artistic refinement.

If you learn how to fight, how to kick someone's ass.. then you're a fighter, a brawler, a thug... thats it.

If you have the ability to fight, combined with the other abilities I've listed... then you can begin to call yoruself a Martial Artist.

The best thing to do if 15 people jump you is to back yourself into a corner (as stupid as that sounds). When you're in corner, it's physically impossible for more than two people to get close enough to you to hit you, so that way you've only ever got two people to fend off.

Better yet, run away.

Posted by Orbax on Sep-02-2003 19:55:

any more than 3 people run the fuck away, and consider after 3. my only thing is to grab the nearest guy and do something fucked up like biting his nose off and screaming at the same time. Then you backaway and you have all this blood on your chin and shit and your breathing hard, and the kid is on the ground screaming. The other two start reconsidering at that point. I always wear running shoes when I go out to bars and clubbing, or when just walking along on streets. Unless the guys were all-star athletes they wont be able to keep up with me, specially not for 15 miles :P

and I wouldnt say that someone who isnt a martial artist who can fight is a "thug". You CAN get morals and philosophy from other sources than the orient

Posted by Mikado on Sep-02-2003 20:14:

Be Cool!

Well if it was 3 on 1 i could hold my snake out infrotn of me to scare everyone off. The things usualy pissed offf so it would bite.

Posted by Floorfiller on Sep-02-2003 20:31:

of course when i was younger i took martial arts...i mean...every little kid wanted to be Ralph Matchio right??? anyway, i took Kempo and Tae Kwon Do...but quit shortly after starting to weight lift...just didn't have the time anymore.

of course i always liked the idea of martial arts...i always wanted to go old school and learn in china starting from a child in a monk village where they practically beat it into literally...that would be how i'd come back...

Posted by Vivid Boy on Sep-02-2003 20:43:

ive been in the situation where i got jumped by like 8 - 9 guys in a club...i just swung wildely hitting anything (even spectators they jumped in to after a few shots) and all i thought to myself was stay on ur feet...u know what i came out of that fight with a few scrathes and a few bruises ppl were amazed...my friends didnt even jump in fuckin pussies...cept for 1 who kicked the shit out of the guy who stared it all

Anyone know a good martial art forum at all? I'm thinking of starting up and i wanna look into it abit more.

Posted by Smeagol on Sep-02-2003 22:41:

I like the acrobatic part best.
Was half way to start doing capoeira but was a bit scared by all the music and instruments. (no offense)
So if you just want to learn the fancy jumps and flips and dont really mind the actual fighting efficency or tradition stuff, where should you go?

Looks like theres quite a few guys in here that knows quite a bit on the subject so i dared to ask...

Posted by Scottaculous on Sep-03-2003 04:16:

One can only go so far in martial arts training without accepting and understanding the philosophical and mental aspect of the martial art. As my Soke's master once said, the student must pursue the "attainment of the 'mind and eyes of god'" to become invincible.

Posted by DjChook on Sep-03-2003 07:10:

Smeagol, First you should go to a few capoeira practices and see for your self... maybe the instruments aren't as scary as you think...

Second, the arcobatics is only a small part of the capoeira, and in some groups even prohibited.

If u want to study all the flips u can just go to a "floor gymnastic course" or something....

DJChook.
You might have a point there, maybe it's not martial art im looking for.

However I think the martial arts style acrobatics (whatever that now might be) look a great deal fancier than the pure acrobatic acrobatics if you see what I mean?

guess I wont find anyone teaching just that part however.

Maybe i'll try capoeira.

I took Wing Chun for a year but the school closed down. I have been wanting to get into Akido for the past 2 years but all we have my area are Tae Kwon Do and American Karate schools.

Posted by netroM on Sep-03-2003 17:39:

Only martial arts i've been to was a really bad Tae Know Do.....Even though we had two Tae Know Do schools in my town, the one i went to was totally suxxore

I think i'm going to create my own martial fighting style soon

Gonna b called:

Drums please......... Drunken Monkey Style!

Concept: Dancing around like a drunk monkey combined with a drunk yoda totally serious and making scary growls....Thus....making the opponents laugh to their death!!!
Come on! Which one of you wouldn't laugh their asses of seeing a 15 year old do that?

Oh... after i've made opponents laugh i would use Japp Shaggi (or sum tae kwon do trick right in their face) PWN3D!!!

If you want a "martial" art thats made just to be aesthetically pleasing... you can try contemporary wushu. Most movies use wushu practitioners for this purpose (jet li, darth maul, etc.)

Wushu basically means martial art, but its being commonly used to refer to a contemporary altered version of kung fu, which was introduced when communist china outlawed traditional kung fu. Its basically what you described, fancy jumps and flips, without fighting / tradition etc.

Its true. Alot of Kung Fu systems have a drunken form, including Eagle Claw and Preying mantis.

Posted by blazed it on Sep-05-2003 02:09:

so orbax have you given a go at these drunken forms of kung fu?
