i was dating this girl that was a big foodie not to long ago so she turned me on to a lot of cool dining stuff. if you haven't tried them yet...i'd highly recommend these two places.

Fruition
The Rootdown

Fruition is probably the best food i ever ate lol, but a little pricey. Rootdown was also really good. if you guys have any suggestions feel free to throw those out hehe

I don't really go out anymore like I used to, but here's how it works in LA, and I'll give Avalon as the example. Doors open at 9 or 10 and liquor is served until 2:00. The party keeps going until people leave-I've been there until 10 am, then people go to the after-after parties. Interesting side note- they start serving liquor again at 6 am and there is usually a line of people at the bar constantly checking their watches..

Tenaglia's longest set was 18 hours. I was there for 17 of it. Morales wouldn't be outdone in his own club (at the time), so he played for 23 straight on NYE. I was there for 20 of that one. At one point in the night, or evening of the night after actually, I was standing in front of a speaker when something grabbed me from behind and yelled "BAH!!". He was hiding in the speaker. It was no coincidence that he didn't do pills while playing Stereo for years after that lol.

Tenaglia's doing 15 hours tomorrow, noon to 3 am. I heard Beyer was great, would have liked to have caught that one, but I think my Stereo days may be behind me.

Were you there when he was playing on his birthday and the cops came because the club was over capacity? I was in the booth with him and he just dropped on the floor crying. Had to comfort him until he could stand again. Not good times.. but we all went to Circus afterwards to console ourselves.

I'm afraid to say you did exactly what Circus wanted. They have called the cops many times claiming Stereo was over capacity so that people would leave and go across the street. When that got old, they started sending guys in to put pepper spray in the ventilation. I wasn't there for the night you were there, but I heard quite a bit about it. Fun fact: The next year for his residency anniversary, they put a couple fire trucks on the flier as a nod jokingly to the night they got evacuated

What a shame many huge (4-6k people) Belgium clubs closed (had to or were forced to). Have you ever been to the Zillion in Antwerp? I still regret I waited too long (and my clubbing days now are over).
I did go to the Versuz (formerly Dockside) in Hasselt. Many crazy Dutch drove hours to get there, even all the way from Rotterdam.
Probably not a single Dutch club could get close to those awesome Belgian ones at the time:



Here in the south of the Netherlands near the border of Belgium and Germany it's easy to find nice clubs. Many clubs available within an hour drive.

I haven't been to those.. I began clubbing just 7 years ago

Also, lately I try avoid the bigger clubs and go for the smaller, more intimate venues.

Out of all the cities I've lived in, Chicago probably has the most opportunities to catch both the big headliners and the lesser known cats. It's also the only city I've lived in that had festivals. Some venues stop at 2, others at 4, and although they don't count, a few bars close at 5. I'm not used to having options. It's pretty nice here.

Denver had a surprising number of clubs with the kind of techno I like to hear. I was never expecting that city to have anything outside of an occasional b-list electro house headliner every few months.

Washington, D.C. was probably the worst. When the last rave promoter, Buzz, stop doing weeklies, the only other large promoter in town took over everything. They embraced the worst of Ibizan superclub bookings and Las Vegas bottle service elitism. I've heard there are a few small-scale promoters there now, but I haven't been back in a while.

I can't think of any place in the States that doesn't close before the sun comes up. Definitely check out Chicago if you visit here.

In socal last call is 2am but most clubs that play electronic music will stay open to at least 3 am if not much longer, for instance avalon will sometimes stay open until 6 or 7am depending on how packed it is etc. the funniest thing is that alcohol is allowed to be sold after 6am and hence sometimes you can start to repurchase. LA in general has always had a decent amount of clubs etc for electronic music. In the late 90s i would argue that la and ny were at the peak bc many times the djs would play until 12pm the next day. One of my favorite personal stories was a giant new years party that ended at i believe 4 or 5 am to be followed by an afterhours party at a different venue. sasha played both parties and by the time it was about 9am he was so mashed on drugs beyond belief he had taken his shoes off and was dancing bare foot. The twilo days were also crazy. The scene in the states has definitely caught up in europe in the sense that its much less drugged out and wild, though the stories from berghain make me want to figure out a way of going and getting in. Only issue i have with la clubbing is that we get very little proper techno compared to europe. but that lack of mainstream popularity also allowed me to see ben klock in a proper underground wharehouse party were he played for 4 solid hours until 7am. it was awesome and i definitely had flashbacks to the old days, the old crowds, and the plur vibes in a good way and not the annoying candy raver way.

You could have been, they still were open then
Which one do you visit in Antwerp?
I also visited smaller clubs, mostly on Friday, well, what's small? 2k people. But some big clubs also had smaller area's which was nice if the music in one area sucked. I liked the big clubs because of the height inside. Visually they were much nicer with all those moving lights. Some nice vids about the Zillion are at youtube, "reportage Zillion". The guy made a diving aquarium at the top of the building. That's a lot cooler compared to the swimming pool in the Peppermill at Heerlen. I always wondered who paid for all that awesome equipment in Belgium...

I consider 2k to be insanely huge I'm heading over to Robert Johnson in Frankfurt in the summer, its capacity is 250. Now that is small. Trouw's basement has a capacity of around 250 too I guess. I like those intimate spaces. Not a lot of lighting, just good music and a bunch of people enjoying their time there.

edit: I guess trance is more suited for large venues whereas house and disco are better for smaller venues. Reach for teh laz0rs!

Lots of great clubs in TO... there is absolutely something for everyone. Big super clubs, smaller grimy clubs, tons of after hours and booze cans. The newest addition is Blk Box. I haven't been yet but it looks sick, has an amazing sound system, and the promoters are bringing great talent through.

Most of my favorite parties have been warehouse parties or loft jams though. Most recent I can think of was Prosumer in November of 2011. Only a couple hundred people, if that, in a nice little loft space. Fuckin sick jam.


edit: boat cruises are huge here in the summer. But I haven't been on one in a few years. I just don't party like I used to.

Well, Dockside was more Top40, but made to impress, Zillion indeed more trance. Clubs like the Real in Tongeren (Belgium), but probably also La Rocca (Lier Belgium) or Mondial (Beek) were/are more intimate and pretty dark inside. Also they had more like a living room (old) styling, gold, brass, mirrors, chandeliers. Maybe you can remember the styling of Danssalon at Eindhoven. I think I liked that better than the modern look of Club Bermuda as it's called now, which is more like reaching lasers.
I lived in a small town, 500 people and now in a town of 2000. Maybe that's why we wanted clubs to be big . The clubs in the towns in the neighborhood could have 800-1600 people. Anything less was more like a regular cafe or pub.

Well, I don't actually live in Breda but in a town of 2500 adjacent to Breda so you're wrongly assuming things I guess

Breda doesn't have any clubs, only bars and bar/dancings. You can't call Graanbeurs or Kerkplein clubs. I think Kerkplein won the best discotheque award a couple of years ago, but that place is horrific. Only top 40 music, people just standing there trying to impress others, and it's way too crowded.

I've been to Silo in Leuven which is a nice dark club too. And I still have to make myself go to Fuse in Brussel, I hear it's a great club and the programming is spot on at times.

I went to Danssalon once while I was still a trancecracker. Marco V was playing, twas a good night. I kinda liked how it looked. Don't know what it looks like nowadays.

I laughed seeing this, the award for best club in Southern Netherlands, there even are some more in Breda
The number of clubs however surprised me a bit, although some must be for teenage kids only. I went to the first one, the Mondial on Friday when I was still at school. Two of my friends went that often that they started working there, that way they could spend the money again the following day at the Peppermill

It's looking modern now, but I don't like it that much, I think the Danssalon style had more class: Club Bermuda Eindhoven

I don't know about the Fuse, it looks like one big crowded area, I think I would pick La Rocca if I had the choice. One of the reasons I preferred bigger clubs, always some space available, well at least in Belgium that was.
