If Bush was in office we'd already be at war.

Moving missiles? Nah son.

Ron Paul sorta looks like that crazy cult leader who thought there was a spaceship behind Hale Bopp and they all killed themselves.

I wish Libertarians did the same thing.

I haven't met a self reported libertarian yet who didn't live in some alternate reality.

Yeah, I'm not talking about long range missiles, I've already dismissed those. I'm not even overly concerned about US casualties. A war with NK, at least in the first few stages, would be much more like the traditional wars that we excel at than the current shit in the middle east. The problem is them destroying SK and/or Japan, which is much harder to prevent.

And, of course, dealing with the aftermath.

This. For those in this thread who tried to remind me of the size of their military, that's irrelevant. North Korea's track record when it comes to making smart decisions is lackluster at best, so I don't know how anybody could expect them to properly operate their military during wartime.

Edit: I suppose that I should clarify that I don't think that it will be a pushover, but I do think that they're not as threatening as a lot of people seem to think they are.

Does the size of troops even matter anymore when you got these?

That said, we shouldn't completely dismiss them, by any means. Just because I don't think anyone living on the mainland of America needs to be afraid, doesn't mean that NK doesn't need to be taken very, very seriously.

Just because NK appears to be completely illogical to us does not mean that they are not rational actors.

Interesting article to keep in mind:

Foreing Affairs: Next Korean War

Yeah, that's sort of what I was trying to get at with my "Edit...". I don't think they're as dangerous as people are making them out to be, but they're certainly someone that we should be cautious of, regardless of whether or not I think that they aren't going to take any action against us.

Lews, there is no doubt about it, many tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of South Koreans would be wounded or killed. There really is nothing you can do to stop it. This would happen so quickly (over the course of 24-48 hours) that there would be nothing you could do short of nuking the entire DMZ to prevent these numbers.

Japan would be fine, their missile force that can reach Japan is minimal, mostly Scuds and domestic Scud variants. They take time to fuel and they are not accurate (and the domestic versions are probably even worse). Like I said, Aegis and Patriot can kill those, and we can go back to Scud hunting like we did in Desert Storm (though a bit harder in the rolling mountains of North Korea).

There's simply no conceivable way they could go through with it. Has any other country in history self-immolated as they (possibly) might?

Someone most definitely got summarily executed if that's the case. Why North Korea has social media is beyond me...

Nothing springs to mind that would be comparable. That's the beauty of deterrence policies - most people don't want to be destroyed. The problem is when things get escalated out of control due to mistakes. If NK attacks, it won't be because they think they can destroy the US and take over the world. They're not that stupid.

All jokes aside, Wednesday should be interesting, one way or the other.
