Lol, the bullshit begins:

Gizmondo headline: New mac pro will cost you $14,000! (and later they state how that could buy you a car, or even several cars). Don't kow what these paupers drive but it wouldn't buy half on one of my cars.

http://gizmodo.com/a-fully-loaded-n...?rev=1387452840

Oh, and then they say at the end it includes 2 x new 4k 30" apple monitors. Without them it's $9k.

How long are you going to wait Richie?

Posted by tehlord on Dec-19-2013 18:34:

Such bullshit arguments tbh. You could EASILY spend $9/14k on a similarly specced PC if you went for the bleeding edge components that the MP uses. The MP is a premium product among premium products.

Very clever launching that frankly huge Logic update at about the same time too

I won't be surprised if the next Logic update drops compatibility with everything but the new Mac Pro. That's OK, I just ordered mine - I can't wait to have those four USB3 ports. That's almost enough to run half my peripherals.

That would definitely be the 'Apple' thing to do, although I would imagine the uproar would be immense among the customers who simply cannot afford MP. If you mean Logic 11, then almost for sure I guess.

They're right though. Kinda. If you want a MacPro completely maxed out, than yeah. You can easily drop $14K.

Without Monitors...
$9,986.00
2.7GHz 12-core with 30MB of L3 cache
64GB (4x16GB) of 1866MHz DDR3 ECC
1TB PCIe-based flash storage
Dual AMD FirePro D700 GPUs with 6GB of GDDR5 VRAM each
Magic Trackpad
Apple Wireless Keyboard - English

Add 1 Sharp 4K 32" Monitor at $3,595 each...
$13,581.00

Maxed out w/Monitor AFTER Taxes...
$14,667.48

So what? That's more than enough for the OS and app installs.

The logic of tutting at what you can spend is stupid.

Go and spec the components used. The mid range Xeon, thousand bucks each. The PCI-e flash storage, thousand bucks, high end AMD cards, thousand bucks each, etc etc. Spec up and you'll spend a lot more, even just buying the parts.

Like I said, it's a premium product for a professional who will likely keep the thing for 5-7 years without ever worrying about compatibilty, upgrades or it becoming obsolete.

Correction: 256 GB SSD (which equates to about $100 more in value).

Off course it is for Professionals. I actually fit right into your last paragraph.

I own a Mac Pro and it has served me very well since 2006 without any worries. The only downside is that it can't be upgraded past 10.7 and I can't put a better video card without hacking it.

If you're a professional, than by all means get one. I use mine for business, so when mine dies, I'll be looking into the new MacPro.

Ha! Yeah, my bad.

Posted by tehlord on Dec-19-2013 19:59:

My new Windows setup (W7 running Cubase 6.5 and tons of plugins) uses about 65GB. If you're careful about where you point library installers 256GB is more than enough for any usage.

the design is supposed to be modular i.e thunderbolt ports.

Posted by DJ RANN on Dec-20-2013 01:35:

Damn, for all those people (you know who you are) who have been saying Apple are going to forget the "Pro" user market, you may need some ketchup to soften the taste of your hat

The apple update is actually pretty fucking huge. The number of improvements and bug fixes are really the difference that was lacking between 9 and a "real" update to X.

Also, I think what most people don't understand that drive isn't just a drive. It isn't even a standard SSD. It's a PCIe Flash drive and considerably faster than any SATA drives currently available.

Apple has not dropped support for legacy versions of hardware. If your hardware can run mountain lion, then it can run logic X.

I like the fact Apple does not try to support ancient machines (7+ years) which would mean the OS is full of bloat like windows.

6 fucking thunderbolt ports.

If you guys haven't checked the microsite yet, it's done pretty fucking slickly: (use the arrow keys)

Yeah, I know. I was just joking, Dr. Killjoy.

The old mac pro was a design classic both inside and out but it was also fucking huge.

Darth Vaders Tampon does look pretty nice though:

Posted by cryophonik on Dec-20-2013 19:30:

That's about the size and color of my coffee mug.

Posted by tehlord on Dec-20-2013 19:50:

I predict a huge and profitable case respray industry about to be born.

Posted by DJ RANN on Dec-20-2013 21:03:

You might well be right, considering the Red one sold at Sotheby's for a staggering...wait for it.....

http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions...014/lot.27.html

.....$977,000

To be honest, I don't think people realize how small the new mac pro is; it's under 10 inches tall and 7 inches wide*

Very sweet, you went for the right processor, maybe to much RAM and the right video card for your uses, but I wouldn't have bothered with 1tb flash drive. There's simply no need - it's not like 1tb is big enough to keep all your sample libraries on so 256 or at most 512 would have been enough. I have a 256 ssd in my imac as the OS drive and I even have a shit ton of media on it such as music (wav) and video (HD) and I'm not even close to 70% full.

Thumbs up
