It's just the culture, really. The sheer fact I left home some 5 years before I got married (living in the same city as my parents, no less) is quite an aberration here. I didn't make any improper use of tense. I used "you" in the universal sense, in the same way "one" can be used as a pronoun if one would like to make oneself sound like the Queen. It was completely clear from the conversation that Lira no longer lives with his parents, and so my response quite clearly did not refer to him specifically.

Just ignore him, mate. He's not singling you out, he does it with everyone... amusingly, he seems to target native speakers most of the time. Didn't he try to correct Brian (Vector A) a while back as well?

Although, if you read it all again, he's likely to blame me for the confusion (because I wrote "age 24" rather than as "aged 24") again.
