Lurking and posting on TA is the one habit I'm still trying to kick in this regard.

Let's hope you ascend to the level of James Joyce sooner rather than later then.

You end up with an all-in-one resource for keeping up with music, film-makers, authors, events and friends.

I DO do all of the above, yet the shit still finds it's way through. Facebook has gotten increasingly good at filtering stuff I don't want through to my news feed. The amount of selfies of people I don't even know that pop up in my feed, simply because a mutual friend from my list likes or comments on them, is staggering. It's like walking through a neighbourhood where nobody owns blinds or turns the lights off.

I do agree about FB's usefulness, otherwise I wouldn't have it to begin with. It just seems I spend more of my time on FB blocking/hiding/deleting stuff I don't want to see than actually enjoying it for it's benefits. Which is why I'm thinking about at least deleting the app from my phone.

Conversely, what I actually enjoy about FB is the way it connects strangers (friends of friends, etc) together to enjoy conversation or constructive debate. People who, otherwise, you'd never really have a good opportunity to meet and engage with. It definitely does close the loop on like minded individuals/mutual friends and whatnot, makes the world smaller, so to speak.

I read that as "meet and enrage" at first.

I'm not suggesting you can block out all the annoying bullshit on Facebook, because it's always going to be there. It was nigh-on intolerable to log in during the election the other month. And I understand why some people don't use it. What I won't accept is some self-regarding wanker dismissing it as mere junk food for the mind and giving himself a pat on the back as though he's living off the grid and has joined a fucking commune by not having a Facebook account.

Sometimes it's definitely "meet and enrage" lol.

I joined FB for the sole purpose of contacting my younger half sister, who I had not seen since she was a baby and our father was killed.

She had no idea she even had two sisters, as I suspected, but we have maintained an online relationship for the past 7 years.

Last night I messaged her and invited her to my wedding, even though we haven't met IRL yet - and she's going to come!!

Damn. Sorry that happened to you.

Congrats on getting married and reconnecting with your sister though.

I don't mean to pry but why is it going to take 7 years to see her?

Sad to hear about your father. But great news about your sister.

You gals will be sharing some good energy during that time.

This is a very interesting thread.

Facebook is more of a love / hate relationship for me.

I run alot of ads on facebook for clients through my ad manager account so as a business tool it is invaluable. No other platform on the net really has the ROI that facebook produces. It really is an exceptional business resource for small and enterprise level companies. Even alot of content and news sites for the most part have a comment system at the bottom of articles only accessible to comment if you have a facebook or if your willing to give them your email and make an account ( i have a couple burner emails for this purpose)

I first got facebook in 2009 while in high school so my feed is pretty much McDonalds fast food, maybe even worse. You know back in high school and college it was mostly a time waster or way to creep on people (girls) haha. Like any social network or community, its value depends on the curation system implemented. And my feed is more "noise" than "signal" . Even worse my instagram is starting to become a hampered mess that needs to be cleaned as well.

I ABSOLUTELY see the benefits that System J is stating though. With a well trimmed facebook it can be incredibly useful for your personal lives. Follow or befriend your favorite artists, writers, websites, close friends and family , etc. Also as System J stated, the private facebook groups are like a god send. Websites can create membership programs and the platform is often facebook private groups.

Facebook is only as valuable as the curation you have in place. However it is a great distraction so i have removed the app from my phone and often log out everytime im done using it. It isnt much , but that added friction to access your profile by adding more steps to the process ( i.e typing in your log in credentials) does help.

Because when I first contacted her she was only 13 years old, and I'm 14 years older than her. I knew it would be overwhelming for her to find out her mother and brother basically kept a huge secret from her for her entire life. She's been through a lot of the same shit and I have always helped her when she's reached out, but I never pushed to meet and left it up to her for when she felt ready/comfortable.

I saw one of her friends I recognized through her FB at the bar a couple months ago and went up and talked to her, and asked her to tell my sister about our chat. My sister messaged me a couple days later saying next time either of us was in the other's city, she wanted to meet up.

She had apparently messaged our other sister asking the same thing, so we're actually all going to try to get together the week before the wedding.
