There's a blue screen on Windows XP? LMAO, I can't believe this but I have never seen it.

Cause.. umm.. Microsoft disables it (instead the OS is set up to auto-reboot if a fatal error occurs)... You can reenable it in System advanced options though...

Also, I disagree (hehe) with some of the nominations here, including edonkey (godliest p2p alive!), real (which was always a good player except in its 6th incarnation), Quicktime (limited on Windows machine, though does get a thumb down for lack of *nix version)...

My nominations for this year are:

1) Rational Rose 2002.. <- Worst software engeneering case I've seen..
2) Sicstus (Linux version) <- don't you hate when you can't access previous commands?
3) Windows Telnet <- ditto...
4) MS Office <- bloatware... though not quite this year's ;(

Then why was I getting them before on my dads computer? No settings were changed because my dad knows fuck-all about computers.

Sorry, but it is impossible to get a Blue Screen Of Death on a standartly configured ("stock") Windows XP... Either your dad uses another version of Windows, or he IMPLICITLY enabled fatal errors reports...

He had just bought the computer and I installed XP Pro on it. There was some hardware conflicitons and I'd get a blue screen with white words on the top left hand corner of it.

If there was as a BEST PC softwear Ever Made *Nominations* thread, the programs below would win just for keeping everything in order.

You just gotta keep your computer in good condition:

Run a good defrager like O&O Defrag Server Edition. Trust me if I dont defrag atleast once every 2 months my computer peaks around 75% fragmented.

Run Norton Utils regularly. Always new problems popping up to be fixed. You run that prog once a week and your windows will run soo smoothly (xp especially. it's not bad for 98.. but it can't fix all it's problems lol).

Have a good firewall up. I use zonealarm pro. I've blocked 327 intrutions with zonealarm, and kept my computer a secure environment.

And have a good antivirus. Norton 2003 is a beauty. I've identified and isolated 4 or 5 virus with norton. Detects them immediately and alerts me right away.

Worst -

Kazaa - millions of users and bugger all returns, always
Quicktime and Real Player - Hate them both, should just sell their technology to winamp or WMP
Bryce 5 - awesome program but the GUI is the worst ever.
Spyware/addware - work of the Bill Gates IMO - shitfull stuff

Best -

Norton Antivirus - Saved my butt plenty of times over the years

It wouldn't exist without a purpose. RAR (which stands for the Russian ARchiver) achieves somewhat better compression than ZIP in somewhat worse time. Anyway, I tend to use WinRAR because I like the way it works, and it can handle pretty much any compressed format thrown at it. And as far as I remember, it always used to be better for multi-disk spanning archives too... Oh and it's self-extraction facility was always better than WinZIP's too.

Most people who aren't fully savvy with using computers never bother to look past the software they already use (or gets there first) to see if there are better alternatives. ZIP is obviously more widespread than RAR, but doesn't mean it's the best technology.. Same applies with other technologies, i.e. MP3 vs OGG, Win vs. *nix, Mozilla vs. IE etc. etc. etc.

I have no problems with XP, I can leave my computer running 24/7 and it's still stable...if I tried doing that on 98...well let's just say I don't think I could make 12 hours.

totally agree XP rocks..had my PC on for 2 weeks straigt..

For those of you who don't like Real Player but still need to play .ram/rm files, get Media Player classic.

http://sourceforge.net/project/show...ackage_id=84358

Open Source imitation of the old Windows Media Player but with a solid list of supported media formats , compact, stable and fast.

So far it's the only player out there that can be embedded in a webpage and can interact both ways with a java applet via javascript - and stream MP3 streams as well. (aka unknowntracks.com)

that's true. i never had a problem with real player. Of course i read through the installation
