The music to the second zone of sonic 2 is unquestionably banging.

Virt - Super Metroid Megamix

best game music = wipeout 3 probably.

Most of the music in the sonic games was good. Theres a trance tune in the ice cap zone in sonic 3. And its not that bad for a 1993 tune.

Posted by Jesse on Mar-16-2004 12:18:

Nobody has even mentioned Secret Of Mana! Man, that soundtrack brings back memories!

Zelda soundtracks, from A Link to the past till The Wind Waker are pure class too (i'm not counting the NES releases as the quality sucks)

For now, I think Halo has a very, very nice score.

Posted by djSlain on Mar-16-2004 17:27:

wipeout XL had a great soundtrack, which eventually built upon the "who is this" artists like Prodigy, Future Sound of London, Photon. It really brought me into EDM. Wipeout 3 was great too. Playing with Avenue or Xpander on Rapier is too much SENSORY OVERLOAD.

I like the intro song for Wild Arms

Posted by jpgrdnr on Mar-17-2004 05:20:

Fallout series.
KOTOR was a recent one.
Neverwinter Nights
Shining Force 1 (maybe 2)
Streets of Rage (haha...I've seen a post on that somewhere here)
Alice (definitely)
Quake (original, NIN all the way)
Midnight Club 2 is good.

ff6, 7 and 8, including orchestrated and piano collections.
parasite eve (come on, i know hardly any people like the game, but the music was too kick ass) PLUS the pe remixes
castlevania: sotn
wipeout series
re: code veronica (some of the tracks from that game were really nice)
chrono cross (didnt like the game but the music was great)
sonic cd (soooooo good) and you KNOW the rest of the sonic series had quality music for their time

Posted by nrjizer on Mar-18-2004 20:05:

^^ I loved Parasite Eve, it really should have gotten more recognition. Can't remember any of the music, so I'll take your word for it (hey, its Square, when have they ever fucked up a soundtrack?).

FF 7 and 8 had the best music, 9 was a bit weak at times (though I love that sleepless city treno). 10's music was kind of minimal, but that was intentional, I beleive, to fit in with the dubs.

Chrono Trigger/Cross had the best music, CC especially. Yasunori Mitsuda is brilliant. I loved the home world map theme, when I first played the game and the old CT theme kicked in, it was such a wonderful dose of nostalgia

Besides RPG's... hmm. The Halo soundtrack can't be beat. Hell, just about everything in that game can't be beat. Half Life deserves mention, even though there isn't a lot of music in it, the tracks that are rock.

Can't really think of a lot more besides the usual suspects of RPG's.

It's a peculiar choice, but I'll mention Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Also, I loved a lot of the music in Final Fantasy X. It's a pity that X-2 tried to go for a trendier soundtrack, though the theme is gorgeous.

Reznor is on the case to do the sounds for Doom III as well. However instead of having a looped composition, the music is to react to your progress and situation in the game, bit like when you went off a massive jump in SSX and it applied a resonance filter to the music. Should be interesting to see what he and Id come up with this time.

Posted by djSlain on Mar-20-2004 21:23:

i just saw the preview for Silent Hill 4: the Room and the last tune they play is awesome.

btw, i just bought a used copy of Silent Hill 2, it didn't come with a soundtrack did it?

Posted by tc-fan on Mar-22-2004 16:23:

SHEN MUE all the way...

Posted by DJ Prophizize on Mar-24-2004 04:46:

I don't know, I would advocate something that makes the game seem "epic" like a faster paced game calls for something that gets you moving like "Blood is Pumping" (Voodoo & Serano) but something more team based and not as fast paced I'd go with some smoother sounds like John Fleming set on here

Posted by TAnt on Apr-18-2004 21:10:

I like the music on Tom Clancy's: Rainbow Six series. (PC)

Nobuo Uematsu is a musical genius. Check out FFVI Grande Finale and 02202002 Final Fantasy in Concert if you don't believe me. Those orchestrations are all arranged and conducted by Uematsu.

Just realized that UT2k4 has amazing music too... don't really notice it in-game, but if you go into the music folder and pop those bad boys into WinAmp you really appreciate it...

Posted by ogvh5150 on Apr-19-2004 02:36:

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame for Quake.

Posted by Gotcha85 on Apr-19-2004 16:16:

I haven't played much games lately, but the best music I've ever heard in a game must be in Turok II.. especially the first level.. that music adds soo much to the gameplay

Posted by Spartan on Apr-19-2004 18:53:

I know I'm diggin deep here but Lifeforce for old school 8 bit nintendo had amazing electronic music, way ahead of its time.

Also Streets of Rage 2 for Sega would be a close second, especially the boss scene.

Posted by Magnus on Apr-19-2004 19:55:

These are a bit old school but some of my favorite videogame music is:

1. Ninja Gaiden on the NES Level 1 music. I love this song and someday I want to make a trance remix of it. I think it would be badass.

2. Contra boss music on the NES. Anytime you fight a boss. Love that little tune.

3. Rastan's level music in the arcade. This game was way ahead of its time both in graphics and music. They used the same tune for every level in the game but somehow I never got sick of it.

4. Music for Splatterhouse on the Turbo Grafx 16 in the Cathedral stage. A fight once broke out at a party because everyone would not STFU for this part so we could all hear how "amazing" the music was.

When I try to think of any videogame music of recent years that stands out to me, I really can't think of any off the top of my head.
