DONT READ THIS IF YOU HAVENT SEEN MULHOLLAND DRIVE.

ok theres my warning.

From the point of the great spatial and narrative shift in Mulholland Drive which has become known as 'the last 25 minutes', we view the high point of Diane Selwyn's arrival in Hollywood to pursue what looks to be a promising career as an actress. However, in a relatively short period of time, Diane falls prey to a succession of serious set backs in life. Unable to attain either steady or satisfying employment in her chosen field, nor able to enjoy the support and respect of either her family or her peers, Diane seeks vicarious success through becoming romantically entangled with successful actress, Camilla (Laura Harring), only to wind up being painfully and publicly jilted by her.

In the wake of these set of events, Diane quickly becomes caught within a miasma of depression, paranoia and perceived hurts from which there is no easy exit. Diane begins to view her ex-lover as a living reminder of her failures in life and resolves that she must be rid of her and all that she represents. But there is no final redemption on the other side of such an act for Diane, whose rising guilt, coupled with everything else that's recently gone so bad in her life, finally sends her into the arms of suicide.

Poised within the hallucinatory portal between life and death, Diane is presented with the opportunity to play her life over. Within the all too beautiful world of Diane's imagination, to which the first 2 hours of Mulholland Drive is devoted, Diane rearranges the aspects of her life into a perfect form. Much like Shadow of a Doubt, Diane's world is a charmed one, featuring a hint of mystery around every corner. In this world, Diane, who is now known in the film as Betty, is a beautiful, talented young actress and well loved daughter who will clearly have Hollywood at her feet in no time.

Into this world, Diane also manages to bring her dead lover back to life. Rewriting history to have her escape the attempt on her life that Diane herself staged, Camilla emerges in Diane's life again as a helpless, mysterious stranger with no memory of the past. The note of danger with which Diane re-enlivens the memory of her lover allows Diane to have her all to herself, in secret. This act finally allows the power balance shift in Diane's favour, and the girls are able to fall in love all over again. But this fantasy world can not last forever, as even in her wildest, dying dream, Diane is unable to imagine anyone but herself profess their love first in that relationship. And ultimately, it is her lover who shakes Diane out of her dream world to tell her that her fantasy world is a facade, and that she must now let her dying mind be silent.

thats just one interpretation, but that was such a fucked up movie, and sort of emotionally draining like requiem for a dream. the music was great and set up the scenes really well. i cant think of any more fucked up movies that werent already mentioned, but my favorite were donnie darko, requiem for a dream, and mulholland drive.

oh and 'vanilla sky' was just a hollywood-ized version of an earlier movie called 'open your eyes' or 'abre los ojos' in spanish. i guess its really good, but ive yet to check it out.

I forgot to mention earlier my love of films from Pedro Almodovar (Spanish director).

Posted by Arsalan on Mar-12-2003 08:49:

I dont think usual suspects was a messed up movie but it was a sick ass movie.

I also recommend One Hour Photo, This movie is really good even. It's like the opisite of how you think Robin williams acts and there are moments in the movie that are amazing. Not necceserly a messed up movie but it's a really good movie.

Memento was really good.

You guys should Check out taxi driver as well.

Memento was an unbelievable movie.
funny thing was that it was so low budget and it kicked so much ass.
that main guy is a wicked actor, he was the bad guy in the count of montecristo.
But memento was amazing, like a puzzle, so glad i took a chance on it. sad when he realized that it was he himself that killed his wife, what an amazing twist.

yes...his films are really intersting... My favorites are "Kika" and "live flesh." A couple other disturbing movies that I thought were good are:

- In the company of men
- your friends and neighbours
- happiness

whoever mentioned perfect blue, damn right. that is a really cool movie. if you're really into anime, i suggest neon genesis evangelion, and serial experiments lain.

nge is 26 episodes, so it take a bit of time, but it is a serious mind fuck at the end. the movies, death and rebirth, and end of evangelion are good too. lots of religous symbolism in nge.

as for lain, it's 13 episodes. really really confusing. took me 3 watches to finally understand it.

but if you have the time, watch these. they make me go

I get so excited when there's talk about interesting movies!

I wonder how this one will turn out...

That looks interesting. I find the timing of the movie to be interesting as well with all this fear mongering about biological warfare...

Wanted to catch this one when it was in theatres...missed it. Is it in english? It's by the same director as Run Lola Run (Tom Tykwer) and all his movies are great...

That interpretation is similar to many I've read...wish I could share this 1 really good one I have but it's only available in print Requiem for a Dream was definitely draining...

hah! In the company of men is certainly twisted! Makes all guys look like assholes...I had bruises on my arms as I watched it in the company of women...

Happiness is hilarious in a fucked up way. Todd Solondz (director) is fucked up...he mad me laugh at pedaphillia which made me feel realy uncomfortable. He seems to poke fun and make you laugh at the most awkward situations...possibly trying to make a point and make you feel guilty...

anyway, I'm rambling...

Posted by lurid on Mar-12-2003 18:39:

Haven't seen any anime lately but NGE is definitely the coolest and my all time fave. The final movie is one big mindfuck...Lain is neat too...the animation style...

Posted by AwakenedAddict on Mar-12-2003 18:48:

I would definately have to recommend Gattica, Trainspotting, and SLC punk. SLC punk being one of the most twisted and "messed up" movies of all time... enjoi

Dang this movie is messed. After the "boys" take turns sexing a "retard". The scene cuts to them slicing up a dead cat hanging on a string.

lovely.

Posted by psychosomatica on Apr-16-2003 03:16:

nobody mentioned battle royale..

Posted by tatgirl on Apr-16-2003 04:39:

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Now Showtime is playing "Julian Donkey Boy", the film Harmonie Corrine made after "Gummo". This movie is WHACK!!!!

Posted by TranceNerd on Apr-16-2003 15:42:

I like most of those movies.. I like movies that are messed up/keep you guessing till the end, but I don't like movies that get really stupid...

Like Event Horizon, in my opinion just got really stupid about halfway through...

Run Lola Run is a good movie... Am I right that theres no english version? (Cuz someone said that there was, but the one I saw was in german with subtitles)

I didn't like cube... just a bunch of people getting killed in different ways... not my idea of a fun movie...

Memento was amazing....

Err...

Dude, Where's My Car is also a great movie (I don't know if anyone mentioned it, cuz it's not exactly in the same category, but it definately keeps you guessing, and is damn funny too.)

The Others is half-decent... I had it figured out about halfway through, but still it was good...

Theres a movie that I've seen... I can't remember what it was, or what it was about, but I remember someone asking me if it was any good, and I said "It wasn't a bad movie, it was just REALLY FUCKE UP"... If I can remember what it was, I'll let you all know.

Posted by TranceNerd on Apr-16-2003 15:56:

Another really good movie, that also keeps you guessing (to some extent) is a REALLY old one... 'The Sting'... Damn that's old..

And Clue... based on the board game.. that's a guesser.. hehe

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Jacob's ladder and Apolocalpse messed me up good

Joesph Conrad can go fuck himself lol

what else..... Any ed norton movie except red dragon

Posted by lurid on Apr-16-2003 19:08:

One more fucked up movie from me...Irreversible. A French film that was in theatres a few weeks ago but got pulled after a week. I'm surprised they even released it with all the controversy surrounding it. It runs backwards ala Memento but from the credits.

Gonna mention some scenes that make it fucked up so...they don't ruin the movie but if you don't want to know don't read on...

It features some amazing camerawork, a long and graphic gay club scene in the beginning where a guy's head gets bashed in with a fire extinguisher repeatedly as it disfigures in front of your eyes, a 10 min male/female anal rape scene where the camera doesn't move (possibly the most difficult thing I've ever had to watch on a movie screen), and at the end the screen flickers until you're about to have a seizure.

I haven't seen so many people walk out of a movie since Cronenberg's Crash! I thought it was great...none of my friends felt the same...

Posted by charmscars on Apr-16-2003 19:38:

gummo is awful.. one of teh only movies i had to stop in the middle b/c it was just too much for me.. i mean, i watched 'happiness' and 'your friends and neighbours' all the wya through and thought they were great.

another fucked up movie..more sexual tho.. is a subtitlted flick called 'romance'

Posted by Tordan on Apr-16-2003 22:25:

If you like weird movies then check out:

- eXistenZ (director David Cronenberg staring Jude Law)
- Being John Malkovich (director Spike Jonze staring John Cusak, Cameron Diaz and John Malkovich of course )

These aren't my favorite movies but they were interesting. After reading the posts I can't wait to see Requiem for a Dream and Pi.

Posted by Bloop on Apr-16-2003 22:34:

Definately rent The Audition - it's a japanese movie but with subtitles , it's as scary and twisted as the japanese version of the ring

Another great anime movie: Graves of the fireflies (will make you bawl your eyes out) and Metropolis

24 hour party people - quite a good movie - basically a documentary movie on how the groups (new order and happy monday) started off @ the Hacienda club <-- also the club that started Sasha off!

Harvard man -- starring Sarah Michelle Gellar & Joey Lauren Adams - definately a great movie to rent!

Posted by StereoPrincess on Apr-16-2003 22:39:

Sultan Sea. With Val Kilmer.
Has anyone else seen this movie? Like no one. I can't believe it.

anything kubrick.. full metal jacket, lolita, eyes wide shut, a clockwork orange and dr. strangelove.

also.. american beauty which im sure you've seen

for me.. a clockwork orange and american beauty are the best movies ive ever seen.

Lolita: Awesome book, Awesome Movies.
A Clockwork Orange: Great book, Movie:... Next on my Renting list!
Eyes Wide Shut: I'll have to watch it with a girl next time.

From reading this post, I've got Pi, Requiem for a Dream, and Cube as MUST see twisted movies. (Other than the ones I've already seen)

How about "Punch Drunk Love"? Sort of a messed up movie. The cinematography is preaty wicked. Whole new approach to love stories.

Damn! Any suggestions?

Since we're discussing movies, has anybody seen "Before Sunrise" (1995)? If anybody want to see opposite of a "messed up" movie, watch "Before Sunrise." That movie is simple and beautiful. Even for a guy, I loved the movie. The best romantic movie I've seen. Two people meet Vienna, walk around the city, and fall in love. The conversation they have is incredible. No special effects, no emotional endings, no dark secrets about past life....pure simplicity. Messed up isn't always good.
