Okay... thanx to ABPsportsline we got alot of things cleared up in here, but Twilogoddes, dont feel alone on critizising him, I have some friends doing the same thing, but b/c they belive what others say and cant read the MAGAZINES the way they are suppost to, they seem to like to translate lots of things, and make up lots of bullshit, well.. a friend of mine has heard that in the URB issue Oakey says that the USA needs to be tought what good music is, and that Jungle and House SUCKS!! << I Went.. thats total bullshit, I read the article like 3 times, and I see hoe people make up so much sh*t to bash other DJ's, or DJ's from other genre, they've been doing this for the following reason
1-) b/c they see that trance is taking over USA, and since those Jungle and House lovers, when they see Oaky Posted upfront on mags such as URB .. they get real pissed and do anything to lower the guy down..
Well.. this Oakey stuff is been pissing me off big time, all the so called themselves " underground " are hearing rumors and beliving them, or just are starting to dislike the guy..
He said clearly that USA is a country where Rock / Pop/ Hip Hop and country are the major genres, b/c thats what they are exposed to, and he said him coming here, is a big challenge, he never called himself the TEACHER or Precher or BEST dj.. his just here to spread the sound.. and thats it!!!

I'm writting this in response to ABTsportsline's post that was attempting to discredit Twilogoddess. First of all I want to appologize to anyone that I may offend by this post. But honestly, I have to clarify some points.
I don't mean to be egotistical or arrogant (that's Oakie's job), but I consider myself pretty knowledgeable when it comes to rave culture and anything electronica related.
1) "Oakie is on tour in the states PROMOTING HIS NEW ALBUM "Another World." OK, first off, I know that Oakenfold is promoting his new album...but YOU CANNOT COMPARE HIM TO ROCK BANDS LIKE U2 OR DAVE MATTHEWS!!! They are playing their OWN songs....He is a DJ, not a fvcking rock star, and it is understandable that he will play some tunes from his album but in a set that is only 2 hours...people want to hear more than that. Let's look at other DJ's in comparison, not rock bands. Dave Seaman recently released Rennaissance: Desire, I have seen him 5 times in the last 4 months (including twice at Twilo, once at Buzz in DC, once at Ultra, and once at the Hope/therapy party at Crobar in Miami) and EVERY SET has completely been different. His sets have been closer to 4 hours long and they had few of his "Desire" tunes. Max Graham recently released "Transport 4". I've seen him 4 times in the last couple of months (including Buzz in DC, Ultra, Hope/Therapy at Crobar, and Evolution in philly) and his sets have also been mind-numbingly good and very different from his album. Sander kleinenberg recently released "Nu Breed 4"...I saw him at ultra and Glow in DC...umm need I repeat what I already wrote. Point being that Oakie plays SHORT and REPETITIVE sets, which illustrates his lack of creativity and laziness. "I know to us "true/hardcore" Oakie fans, this seems like he's "cheating us" out of our money. But its about promotion, and turning NEW people on to it"....this is one of the main reasons people can't stand him now...he's all about promotion...promoting his name and making money. He's not in it for the music or for his fans. He's selfish, greedy and arrogant.
2) "In the Mixmag article Twilogoddess refers to, the reference is made TO Paul what he thinks about being CALLED the most SUCCESSFUL DJ in the world. Any other statements posted about him claiming to be the best would be unfounded. He has been voted numerous times by various magazines as the best, but he never claimed himself that he was." Twilogoddess was referring the Muzik Magazine where he PROCLAIMED HIMSELF...and I quote..."I AM THE BIGGEST DJ IN THE WORLD". I own the magazine. He said it flat out...and he also said "I WILL NAIL AMERICA". This is reconfirmed in the latest issue of Muzik magazine that is out now. Go buy it and read the interview with Oakenfold. They remark on his arrogance and why he's hated in England. In his own defence all he can say is that the British hate those who are successful. Then they remark about arrogant statements that he made in URB that quoted him saying that American's aren't ready for his music....for his defense he says that he was "dyslexic"...come on now, give me a break. Go read the article people. So Twilogoddess was right and he is arrogant. Look at how he was making love to the camera for MTV. At his Rockefeller set he skipped the needle twice, played Someone ONCE AGAIN in a two hour set and spent half the time trying to look pretty for the cameras; making strange poses and occasionally pointing to nobody out in the crowd and smiling. In addition to charging astronimical fees for beleaguered sets, he asks for first class airfare, hotel, limo, the works. He's so full of himself it isn't even funny.
3) "He's Lazy - How many DJ's you know that "work out?" He isn't lazy at all, in fact, if you have ever seen him live, he very much gets into the set." HAHAHAHAHA....when people say he's lazy, it's not meant in a physical way. He's lazy in that he doesn't bother to look for new records to mix. He plays THE SAME SET EVERYWHERE!!! so he knows exactly how these tunes are going to mix and he doesn't work at dj'ing...he might aswell just pop in his "another world" album and stand and try to look pretty for the camera. "FYI - many of you don't know this, but sometimes he will hit 2 or 3 clubs IN ONE NIGHT to spin sets... As a former DJ, I can assure you its usually easier to Spin a 3-5 hour set in one club than it is to move from club to club all night and spin 2 hour sets." FYI, he doesn't play 3 clubs a night. In the past year on his tour he has only hit Buzz and Glow on the same night back during thanksgiving and then at ultra then shadow lounge. That's twice. it's not that big a feat considering the clubs are a couple of blocks from each other and he gets a break in between.
4) The tunes Oakie plays aren't underground - This is a stupid debate, really. All the songs we hear are underground....until we hear them. Then we say we heard them and they are no longer "underground". What classifies a song as "no longer underground?" You hear it on the radio? Then technically, almost everything you'll hear him and others spin is "underground." The underground debate is really down to each person's personal perspectives and really can't be argued upon.
5) Since I am pretty adept at trainspotting, I have compiled tracklistings from the Oakenfold sets that I have seen and from my friends that have seen him at Coachella in california and austin TX. Watch the similarities.

6) "I have heard that Oakie is rude to his fans, turning away autographs, ending sets early, starting sets late...." - This is absolutely true. My friend saw him at Avalon boston last summer and afterwards oakenfold was sitting chilling drinking a beer and my friend asked him to sign his tranceport cover and he just huffed and turned his face. THIS IS TRUE!!! Oakie has GOD COMPLEX!

Raven very good response, but to make it short every-1 has thier own opinions...
Some say PVD is God and Some Say He's Shit... It's all about opinions.. And about the tracklistings you posted that's very true about his set.. I did although come across alot of white labels and unknowns in the sets.. Also, Paul Van Dyk, Tiesto, Ferry and other play alot of the stuff that gets the crowds going in almost every set.. May-b Oakie is doing the same..
ok, that's almost scary at how many tracklistings you have for oakie... but my only bone to pick with that is, you said watch for similarities, but the recurring tracks in his set don't seem to be as predictable as everyone's making it out to be... just because we've all been discussing them, we happen to know flesh, animal, insigma will appear (etc.)
but tiesto's done the exact same thing recently (schiller, flight, insigma, YAHEL>? still?, stringer)
and im guessing the majority of other djs out there do it too.
i dont see a basis for slighting him because of his track selection (although it seems... shall we say... established)
Well, as patticus said, I was watching the tracklisting and you said to watch for how played out the tunes have come on his sets, and it seems that you hit yourself with your own mistake...
as I see, well, I see that he does playe his , it seems his favorite tunes like Lostit.com, Insigma, Solar Stones, schiller and amoebassasin. WEll, as other post have said, other DJ's, if you see their playlist, will have the same stuff!!!! I've heard 3 of Tiestos set where almost everytrack is played.. but thats b/c his not playing on the same venue, instead, his playing for a different crowd, everyone would like to hear those songs.. so his forced to please the crowd, thats the same with Oakey, if we are to critize Oakey, then we are into a bad road, we would have to critisize like everysignle top DJ.. if you didnt notice, but I did, there was a couple of White Labels and Unknown, as well some big difference on some sets, never thought he would play Factor 9, nor push, not Timo mass.. great stuff there!!!
But this whole Oakey stuff , is just sad .......
I like what he plays, and his mixing skills are good as well.
Until then, I have no clue of his personal life, and promoting.. thats his f*cking life, if he wants to live like a King, then he deserves to, he friking owns a LABEL, and about some comments he made about america, if he indeed said that we need to be teached about good music, thats obviously true, there's only a HANDPICKED of people that knows the good music in america.. we all know that! Compare america to Britain.. now.. come on, we all know that Majority listens to all those POP genres, so they are definetly for a big lesson!

i may have just signed on the message boards to trance addict .com recently, but that doesn't mean i was born in a paper bag yesterday. I've been into trance for 4 years now, and i have been around. No offense to tranceaddict.commers (they so far have been very nice people), but Tranceaddict.com is not the bible or final frontier with trance. there are millions upon millions of people who like trance who have no idea this site exists, and i'm sure hundreds of thousands who all know more about trance than all of us, who aren't on tranceaddict. just food for thought.
and about this whole oakey debate - just drop it people. some are going to like him, some are not - but i think there is a lot of b*llsh@t going around out there of people just not liking him because he probably is the most widely-known DJ. Just get off your horse and accept him for what he is : probably the person that is going to turn MTV (or america) onto trance.
everyone keeps saying he plays the same tracks, but to repeat what the last 2 guys have said, he only repeats like 3-4 songs each set, which is the same as every other DJ. But most of you guys are so blinded by your hatred for oakenfold that you don't even realize this. PvD is good, but plays his own songs almost every set he plays - no one complains about this do they? Of course not, because PvD is NOT paul oakenfold. Tiesto is the same - he plays at least 3-4 of the same songs every set, but no one notices do they???
and look at mauro picotto - not the best DJ by far, but a damn good producer... and i've been to 3 of his shows and i've NEVER seen a crowd get spun up like at his shows - but at picotto's shows all he plays are HIS OWN RECORDS - the same ones over and over again, and they NEVER GET OLD. but we don't all hate him do we? no, because he's not .......... MAINSTREAM I wonder if you 'consider' his songs "underground"??????? LoL

In my opnion, I think Paul Oakenfold is pretty good, my friends were making fun of him about the way he dances. I admit he dances a bit odd but still, don't be dissing somebody about their skills when he is better then you. I find at least trance music is getting commericalized with Paul Oakenfold, rather then what crap is in Los Angeles (ie DJ Mystik, DJ Epic). People think DJ Mystik made Escape when it was made by Kay Cee. Also, people I talk to think DJ Epic made the classical Fable, I told them it is made by Robert Miles, an Italian DJ.
It took me a while to finish reading this entire thread and I�d be damned if I don�t reply to it! Here are my opinions and they are just MY OPINIONS . . . like assholes everybody has one. 
First, let�s determine what is commercial and what is underground.
If you took a person who listens to nothing but KTU and Z100 all day all night, put them in the middle of Vinyl during a DT set and then put them in the middle of Twilo during a PVD set . . . then ask them what the difference between the two was . . . they would say nothing. They would say they all sound the same!
A person in the underground scene who is musically inclined would know the difference right away.
Here�s the thing . . .every other KTU/MTV Dick, Jane, and Harry can�t listen to our music for too long cause they get bored. Why? Cause they�re use to hearing music with lyrics. That�s mainstream. While we (the underground rats) jam to the deep house beats of DT and high energy break beat trance of PVD . . . the word bored would be the last thing on our minds.
That�s the difference between the two.
In a commercial market, a DJ can make A LOT of money. In an Underground market . . . it�s limited as to how much a DJ can make. A DJ in an Underground scene will sell maybe 250,000 cds at best . . . a commercial DJ can sell maybe 4X that amount cause he has a wider range of audience.
It would be great if a DJ could bring the underground scene into the open, to push it into the faces of society and let it be accepted everywhere in the US like it is in Europe. It would be great if the music industry could sell the underground music as is without altering it and having it sound cheesy. It would be great if I could say that Oakey stayed true and remained underground, but unfortunately he didn�t.
He didn�t take this music and presented it to the world as is . . . he modified himself, changed his style, his selection of music so that the mainstream crowd can listen to it without getting bored. Some great DJs of OUR time didn�t do that. Sasha, DT, and Carl Cox all stayed true to themselves even though they rose to fame. Sasha will never make his beats easier and shine more light into his dark sets cause some big label producers told him he would sell more records that way. DT, �til this day still spin in Vinyl more times then he tours in huge clubs because that�s his house and doesn�t need Rockefeller Center to prove anything. HOWEVER, ask who�s getting paid more . . . and it�s going to be Oakey. Cause that�s what commercial is . . . money.
Listen, before some of you jump on my back . . . I�m not saying that Oakey was a bad DJ. On the contrary, he was one of my favorite several years ago. I�ve seen Oakey spin in the US, Europe, and Ibiza for the last 3-4 years. He does deserve some level of respect. He was one of my favorite cause he knew how to read the crowd . . . he was the master at taking us on a journey. THAT was his gold ring!!
His mixing skills were NEVER that great . . .that is a fact, not an opinion. Now I�m not a DJ and won�t pretend that I know a lot about mixing, but I do live in a circle of some very musically inclined people. And from what I�ve seen and heard I do know this much . . . his mixing skills were much better in �97 to �99. After that it started going down hill . . . he doesn�t let the tracks blend fast enough and he let them fade away too fast. Why? Cause he knows he�s going to train wreck. Usually when a DJ cut and fade fast, it�s because they know they can�t match the beat and is going to train wreck. That�s how he got his nick name �DJ Fade Away.�
It wasn�t his mixing skills that made him huge, it was his connection with the crowd. A good DJ knows how to connect with his audience and create a vibe with that. DT is famous for this. Oakey had that in the late 90�s . . . that was what made him so great! But somewhere he got tired and he lost his passion. He wanted to make money and is doing exactly that. Can we blame him? No! You can�t fault a man for trying to make a living. However, every thing has a sacrifice . . . fame especially. In order to become famous WITHIN the mainstream entertainment business . . . you have to become mainstream. And that�s exactly what he is doing.
Back in �97 he was spinning goa trance and then in �98 and �99 he would spin melodic and hard trance . . . then all of a sudden he turned and gave into the commercial media. Now all he spin are vocal tracks (95% of them being Jan Johnson, which is marketing) and a whole lot of remixes and rehashes.
Egotistic? Show me a DJ who doesn�t have some level of ego! He deserve to be egotistic, he�s making enough money to be!
I guess after all is said and done, whether you think Oakey is a great DJ or a sell out . . . he�s laughing all way to the bank. That�s the bottom line. Love it or hate it.

JayD, I agree whole-heartedly with what you are saying. My problem is that I get irritated when ignorant people make stupid comments that aren't founded in any truth. I completely agree that everyone is entitled to their own taste. If Oakenfold is someone's favorite DJ then so be it. But they need to acknowledge that:
1. His sets are repetitive and short....the same in every city. Same tracks, same order, in that essence he is lazy. he already knows how the tracks will mix together and he's not working at "DJ'ing". It's hysterical how ABTsportsline mistook my comment about Oakie's being lazy as a physical attribute. He's lazy because he's unimaginative and uninspiring.
2. He's arrogant....no one can deny that he's in love with himself. From his self-proclamation in Muzik magazine as "The Biggest DJ in the World" (I own the magazine where he states that). To how he will "Nail America". To his lack of respect for fans, and his high demand for 1st class airfare, hotel, limo...etc. I think that's what gets me the most heated. In the lastest issue of Muzik which is out now they confront him about statements he made about the US being uneducated and "not ready for his music". In his own defense he states that he was "dyslexic" and didn't mean it. Even on MTV he was making love with the camera and pointing aimlessly at no one and smilling like a fool....holding out his arms like he was jesus.
Patticus and Liquid X. I only went to the Two buzz shows and the Ultra festival. The other lists were compiled by my friends and the Rockefeller list was compiled by me watching the show, so I don't know what other tunes he might have played.
From those 7 lists here is the occurance of some of the songs
Animal - 6 times
Open your eyes - 6 times
Seven cities - 5 times
Gyromancer - 5 times
Das Glockenspiel - 5 times
Piledriver - 4 times
Flesh - 4 times
Rendezvous - 4 times

Come on now you guys. In a set that is barely two hours long for him to play those same tunes is a little tiresome. And that's not counting the countless other cities where I heard he played the same tunes. I'll have to admit that his latest outing at buzz on 4/8 was quite amazing since he didn't play a single tune from his albums. I really enjoyed that set. But the other times I have seen him were all the same.
I understand that PvD, Tiesto, and other DJ's play some of those tunes too....but not in the repetitve manner that Oakie does and they drop them in sets that are much much longer than 2 hours. There is no comparison between a 2 hour Oakenfold set and an 8 hour EPIC PvD journey. To give you guys an example I've also compiled two tracklistings from PvD's last two Twilo appearances. Notice they only share 3 songs. The first set was 7 hours long, so i couldn't identify about 4 hours of music and the second set was 8 hours long so I couldn't identify about 5-6 hours of music.

Blueangel, that was an excellent analysis and the only thing that I'd have to disagree with you is that there are a lot of DJ's that are still grounded and unaffected by their superstar status in the world. I've met Dave Seaman and Max Graham and they are among the most cordial and pleasant people. I never let on the immense shock and excitement that I was feeling while talking to them about DJ'ing and producing and travelling. I even exchanged e-mails with Dave Seaman.
I think the Mr. Congeniality award must go to Paul van Dyk. the man has reached the peak of his field, along with Sasha, Diggers, coxy and Oakie. He constantly refuses to acknowledge he is a superstar DJ yet everyone knows he is the epitome of a superstar DJ. He's so calm, cool, collected...always lost in 100% concentration in his music. Never have I seen a DJ get so into the music.

Liquid X, I see you're in Miami....well then I envy you. Due to Twilo's closing...the thousands of Twiloites who come for PvD's bi-monthly residency will be going through withdrawal symptoms by this time next week.
You, on the other hand, have the luxury of catching a 4-6 hour PvD set at Space in Miami next Friday where he is now booked instead of Twilo.
You might just get to hear that tune...it's one of my own all time favorites and actually brought me to tears when i heard it at Twilo.
I know you'll be absolutely blown away.

BlueAngel, I agree with you that there is a certain level of confidence that these DJ's possess...but I think that is completely different from arrogance which is displayed by Oakie.
By the way, i'm really surprised that PvD trainwrecked...usually he is the picture of perfection when he spins. I've never heard him trainwreck...even in his marathon 8 hour Twilo sets. I remember one time though he was playing in Philly at Space before it became Motion and the power died for a moment...something totally beyond his control and he screamed out "FUCK!" You could tell the docile trancemaster was so pissed off that it killed his groove.
I'm jealous you got to see him in Ibiza...but I got to see him at Gatecrasher

hm. i have a lot to say.
1) i dont think raven has established that oakie is that much different in terms of laziness in playlists, just because you showed two pvd sets. plus, pvd is the king anyways. look at tiesto's sets. im really starting to get sick of david forbes, riva and m.i.k.e.
look even at his magik 7 playlist? that's all a bunch of OLD tracks.
2) i envy all you guys too... im in vancouver AND underage, so its real tough to get out to see these huge names. everyone else, ferry to tiesto to pvd, they're all awesome guys
3) according to a friend of mine, who's a big dj in miami (res. las vegas)... sasha's an asshole. ive heard other stories too... pvd shrugging is just being cool, he has that demeanor but supposedly sasha is the only big asshole dj out there.
4) pvd trainwrecks in the video mayday 2000 (and also uses the x-fader blatantly) ...... maybe that's laziness?
but then again having those two 7 hr sets sharing few same songs is impressive. wow

Anyways dont compare Oakey to PvD (PvD will blow him out of the water)
1 PvD makes his own music. (Don't forget that even Tranceport has 3 PvD produced/remixed tracks)
2 PvD consistently plays long sets everywhere in the world. This is because he chooses too. Oakey chooses not to do that--why? When Oakey chooses to play even a 4-5 hour set I will allow him to play old songs like Bullet in the Gun.
I wish everyone could have experienced a legendary 8-hour PvD@Twilo set. It blows your mind. Nothing like it anwhere.
