-- Sure-fire way to tell trance apart from house?
Pages (3): « 1 2 [3]
Easiest way to tell true house (not hard-house, prog etc) is simply its live sound. Whereas you can tell trance is made on computers n synths n all that jazz, House has a more 'live band' sound. Also just by listening to lots of house it becomes piss easy to tell the difference.
house = 120-130bpm..monotorous tunes..but great beats
trance = 125-140bpm..ever changing tunes...monotorous beats

there's a lot of wrong/lame info in this thread. the main difference between trance and house is the structure of the track.
house: 125-130bpm (as stated above), no really long breakdowns usually, though there always are breakdowns. usually the bassline carries the melody if there is one, or else a vocal sample does. tracks tend to be repetative, ie, a looped sample or looped verse. the beat pattern is the important distinction though. it's 4/4 and goes "boom tiss boom tiss boom tiss boom tiss". it can also have "tiss" on top of the "boom" and often the 2nd and 4th "boom" have a stronger "tiss". the beat is the distinct feature though. some house music can have "trancy" synths, but it's still house.
trance: 130-140bpm (as stated above), at least one breakdown, usually long and drawn out. sometimes there are several. emotional track structure, much like pop music. it goes somewhere. the melody is usually carried in the midrange synths or vocals, but not always. the beat pattern varies a bit, but is always 4/4 and goes "boom boom boom boom". there can be a "tiss" here and there, usually on the 2nd and 4th "boom", but sometimes between beats as well, just like in house music (armin's tracks often have this). but the main feature of trance is the emotional, melodic part.
and then there are types of trance and house that follow few of the above "rules". hard trance, progressive house, etc.
experience in listening to different types of EDM will give you a better handle.
lol
