Yeah i would really like labels to throw stages. A Get Physical or Minus stage would own at an event. An how about an Unreleased Digital Stage or bookings Dinka, Daniel Portman, EDX, come on.

Posted by Cool1g on May-12-2010 21:42:

i just noticed Steve Aoki is on the mainstage on Sunday???

Posted by Artois on May-12-2010 21:45:

LOL Bloody Beetroots did the mainstage at dance valley last year too but the other stages are all huge so it doesnt matter

Posted by Cool1g on May-12-2010 21:51:

DaveT - this event is not comparable to EDC or Global Gathering in terms of productions or running hours... it is only from 1pm-9pm on Saturday and Sunday... and their production is nothing like the huge massives, either in Europe or EDC/Ultra. Granted the talent is better than EDC but again you already noted why that is in your prior posts...

Hence the 'cheap' fee of $60 to get in for SW4...

a more appropriate comparison to EDC would be say Global Gathering which is $180 per ticket or $150 for Creamfields...

After the last few pages... man I cannot believe the hostility that's brewing in this thread.

Some things to think about:
1) For venues and most promoters, the bottom line is about pulling the biggest art of the crowd they can. It also is about making as much money as they can. What most people forget is that International DJs cost a boat load of money to get out here, and at massives they are going to ask for more money, because of the amount of people in attendance.

2) Why so much electro? It's because that's what is filling clubs these days. I would kill to see a true trance massive like those back in the 90's before I ever got the chance to go. This year, EDC is making headway with the Gareth, Simon, Sean, Armin, A&B lineup. So I am happy to see that. That being said, I'm a fan of the Laidback Luke/Chuckie/Afrojack/SHM sound too, so I'm even more happy to see them being pulled out. I have yet to see them act together at one event, and I think the energy will be awesome from it.

3) Do I think the event is expensive? Oh yes, believe me I do. I will still go though because I want to hear the artists they have booked and all in all, its cheaper then having to string together night after night of clubs trying to see each one of the artists I'm interested in.

4)I'd love to see even more variety at an event like this, and hopefully with the growing success of EDC we will see Insomniac get the opportunity to use the whole block/park like the old Innercity parties in Amsterdam ID&T used to throw. That way we can get the variety we are all seeking. I'd love to see an Umek, Von Stroke, Gartner, and Vath stage... but hey... they already have Claud and Gartner so that's cool too.

5) Could they bring in some new talent? Sure, I'd love to see some more of the High Contrast Recordings producers at the event. is it going to happen yet, probably not, but I keep rooting to hear my favorites at a massive or at a club.

I still haven't gotten my ticket because I'm trying to figure out if i can afford 2 days in LA with a 2 day ticket... we'll see what happens. All my plans though are to go both days. I for one am excited to see so many great DJs.

You guys are missing the obvious, which directly relates to the topic at hand. Notice that each of the 8 stages (4 each day) has a DIFFERENT GENRE. 8 types of music are represented here, making everybody happy.

Insomniac, please follow their lead!

I say give me less lights and the amount of time that it runs into the night is irrelevant, better music kills all those factors.

also EDC cannot compare to Global Gathering or any event of that magnitude and to make them think they are comparable at this point is ridiculous

This is the main issue! I understand that Electro fills clubs in la but so does Tech-House, Trance, Deep House, Hip-Hop, Rock, etc.

This whole rant will make me unbookable in all of california probably but I just feel it should all be brought up over accepting it

Probably not... there has not really been in the past. EDC tends to be much more commercially focused then most of the other massives (meaning they tend to focus on the underground sounds).

The closest I would ever say of the main genres I've ever seen booked are Yoji, J00F, and Christopher Lawrence.

I don't know much about LA's scene, but massives like EDC and Monster Massive are generally marketed to the whole region. Other then the electro scene a lot of the Trance, Tech House, Prog, Techno scene in San Diego sadly doesn't do too well. Very lame I know... but its what seems to be happening. And you, god willing, will never see EDC have Rock or Hip Hop as its always been EDM focused. If it becomes a commercial "Coachella-like" event I'm not going.

Need Dance Valley or Mysteryland stage production!

For anyone looking for some good Prog Trance, Prog House & Techno, I highly recommend checking out DJ Cressida from Germany, who will be in both Hollywood and Orange County this weekend. His set last year at Circus rivaled most anything I heard at EDC.

The irony to me is that so many people will flock to EDC to hear Armin, A&B, etc. yet will complain that they are listening to Armin, A&B, etc. over & over. There are many amazing artists & DJ's coming to our local clubs, but only those in the know will show up while most everyone else is waiting for the top 10 European DJ's to spin at the massives. I would like to hear Cressida throwing down some mind f*cking Tech & Prog Trance at EDC sometime soon, it would be a welcome addition!

It would be nice to have Cressida at EDC but Cressida just can't pull crowds as a headliner like Armin or A&B does. Like it or not, that's just where the money are. Some people would actually consider going VIP for those headliners and not for the open bar (even though they don't have open bar this year).

I'm pretty sure 80% of the people will go to EDC (no matter the lineup) just to get fucked off their asses, and the other 20% wont go unless there is a good lineup.

so....

ID&T & Q-Dance are the same company you know. Just marketed to different audiences.

Posted by solrac67 on May-13-2010 19:54:

I think what Insomniac doesn't do in the realm of a "different" stage set up, as they do in those festivals, they make up in the other things they do in making it a "carnival" with having all these weird-looking cirque-de-soleil people roaming around and making the party a trip for people. Look at Ultra this year, they went balls out and had HUGE production on all fronts for the stages/domes this year (not "different" tho, just big, which was still really good IMO). It was awesome, but they NEVER have the type of ambiance that any of the Insomniac massives do.

Yea, it would be cool to see a crazy towering stage that looks like one of the one's at Sensation, Mysterland, etc, but I think it's still pretty cool to see all the other things that they do. You don't see any art installations at those other festivals (burning man statues, light cube, that tank-robot thing they had last year etc). As one of those that travels to these massives, I've got to say that the way insomniac gets a massive together is above any other here in the US.

As far as what they're doing this year w/the VIP, yea it kinda sucks, was looking forward to getting trashed on Fri haha, but oh well. What they should do is at least offer discounted drinks for those in the VIP. ie, you run out of your 7 drinks, now you can buy drinks at $5 (vs the $10-12 they charge at the outside bars). That way they make a marginal profit and still maintain some sort of benefit for the VIP ppl.
