Yes, that was his second yellow so it resulted in a red.

Mastroeni did that tackle straight to the body, the ball was long gone. Not to mention he did it with both feet, that alone is a red card offense - You are just not supposed to do that. Yah, there may be times when it isn't sanctioned as such but that is supposed to be a straight red card.

edit:
Hell, they're supposed to show straight red even if it's with one foot now:

At least on Sportsnet that moron Vic Router knows to keep his uninformed comments to himself.

i had to switch to the english commentator, couldn't stand the ABC commentators, they should stick to baseball.

Seriously...the US got beat by the damn refs...

The US certainly were there to play but the Italians need to work on their glass ankles...

The first Italian goal was pretty good though

All this bashing of the ref is not deserved. Common guys, I know the ref wasn't consistant with some of his calls (ie. like that zambrotta yellow at the end) but both straight reds were deserved. Are you guys telling me that De Rossi shouldn't have been sent off for that elbow? That's ridiculous! The guy should be suspended for the rest of the world cup for that kinda crap. And Mastroeni's two foot tackle is an instant red in any ref's books. The ball was gone, but never mind that, it was a straight two foot tackle which in any soccer game is a red. Pope's second yellow might have been a little harsh b/c of the situation it would have created 9-on-10 but still nevertheless it was a rough challenge and I think the ref forgot that Pope already had a yellow. And the US disallowed goal, I know they were trying so hard and it would have been sweet if they would have got that goal b/c of hard effort but McBride was offside and was interfering with the goalie in a way so another right call by the official. This poor ref is gonna get a lot of shit from the fans and all, but I think most of the crucial calls he made were correct.

Besided the reffing though, Italy can play a lot better than the bunch of pansy, "oh my leg" plays just to get advantage; talk about obvious.
I wasn't for the States in the beginning, but they deserved that game.

Brazil didn't play well at all today...they won but they better improve or they'll be crushed by Argentina or even other teams.

Posted by srg:. on Jun-18-2006 18:23:

I expected better play from Brazil, but it's only been 2 games so i'll cut them some slack.

Yup, if Brazil doesn't step it up, a team like Argentina is going to rip them apart. I wasn't impressed by their game. Sloppy Sloppy passes.

Posted by Cribby on Jun-18-2006 19:45:

Agreed ^^ but I still had loads of fun celebrating with them

So true. It's sad watching Ronaldo play like that knowing that he's capable of so much more. Can't wait to see him score. It was a decent game nonetheless.

Question about the red & yellow cards... so the slate is whiped clean once the group games are done?
