Carbo sacked, thoughts?

Posted by chimera66 on Mar-10-2009 11:46:

just looked at the standings...wow i knew the race for the top eight was tight but looking at the two conferences any little mistake could have you booted out of the playoffs. going to get down to the last game on the last day of the regular season. exciting .

also didn't realize san jose and detroit were that close with regards to points to boston...guess they aren't guaranteed the presidents cup.

They're both just one point behind, and both have played less games!

Didn't even realize it was that close.

'My' team just kidnapped the kid who's #2 on that list from one of our rival teams

Ranked as the second most promising youngster of all -92 born juniors, and probably the only Finn to get a first round pick in 2010

Firing coaches rarely works. It did work for Chicago, but then again they found a great replacement. Montreal, had they found their game, would actually be able to come close to their last year's stats. Now... I'm not so sure.

Habs problem this season is this whole centennial thing. Pressured to perform (Cup finals or else) with an average team.

In today's balanced NHL you cannot win the Cup based on pure heart and grit, which allegedly they lack anyway.

In the mean time the western conference is chugging along.

it worked for the caps too last season. Ever since Boudreau took charge, we've picked up immensely

Carbo said something that annoyed Gainey... after loosing to the Trashers (a horrendeous game), Carbo told Gainey " I don't know what to do anymore ... "

Gainey was ticked by that, "he's the head of the team and he should always have at least one solution"

Posted by malek on Mar-10-2009 23:34:

For the record, Carbo has the best regular season record since Pat Burns.

Posted by bamski on Mar-11-2009 05:55:

Seems that at least Koivu wasn't all too bothered with the new coach

On the other hand, it's not often a team loses their first game under a new coach.

It's one thing to think that, but to say it out loud..

man the Flames are playing terrible lately.
If they dont shape up, Van might just catch them.

I am totally surprised if Teemu Pulkkinen isn't drafted in the first round. After all he was supposed to be even bigger prospect than Granlund until WJC.

You better make that guy a quality player. We don't have that big prospects too often...

So true. We haven't had anything promising since the class of '83 (M.Koivu, T.Ruutu etc.).

Excluding our goalies, that is.

Seems Rm is breaking through as we speak, not to mention Rinne. Lehtonen has finally succeeded in consecutive games too.

Who's next? Easy, Antti Niemi!

I'm curious to know how the Leaf-fans feel about Toskala's surgery, sad about loosing their #1 goalie, or just happy Cujo gets to play..

I don't think certain agegroups are actually that bad. 83's are super for Finland and that kind of agegroups are ultrarare here. But still:

84: Valtteri Filppula, Sean Bergenheim, Anssi Salmela, Sami Lepist, Petri Kontiola, Antti Pihlstrm
86: Petteri Nokelainen, Lauri Korpikoski, Lauri Tukonen (these guys were supposed to be golden)
87: Oskar Osala, Jesse Joensuu, Perttu Lindgren, Mikko Lehtonen, Jori Lehter, Teemu Laakso

( 91: Toni Rajala, Erik Haula, Joonas Nttinen, Tommi Kivist, Nico Manelius, Sami Vatanen )

Those are fairly good agegroups too. Shame that Lehter were injured during 2007 WJC and we had like the worst coach ever

And my bet for next finnish starting goalie is Tuukka Rask. Maybe next season?

Lindgren and Lehtonen are lost causes regarding the NHL, and Laakso is just Laakso. Having followed him since he was a b-junior, I can't picture him in an NHL team's starting lineup, not now, not ever.

Osala could make it, maybe even Konna.. But they have a long way to go, too.

None of the guys posted will ever make it far as Koivu or lil Rudy.

Yep. Osala and Joensuu for an example are in my opinion 2nd line potential at best so no Koivu there. That is why I'm watching 91's and 92's with close eye and that is exactly why I hope Granlund isn't spoiled.

I wouldn't consider Lehtonen lost cause just yet. He has made some pretty impressive numbers for a rookie in AHL so there is still potential. Lindgren then again... well potential is there but does he have the will to use it is another thing.

Glad that he's finally getting it fixed instead of wasting an entire season playing semi-injured.

Glad that we picked up Gerber so Cujo won't be playing every game. Although Cujo playing constantly would sure be good for the Tavares lottery...

well, the debate will always rage, I think, because Roy had this amount of wins at 37 and retired (plus he didn't have the shootout). Brodeur is also 37 and played some far better defensive teams in New Jersey than Roy ever had in Montreal. Additionally, Roy won THREE Conn Smythe trophies (playoff MVP for those who don't know), two with Montreal in 86 and 93 and one with Colorado 2001. Brodeur has not won that award (yet anyway).

Posted by verndogs on Mar-15-2009 19:23:

Well Roy did beat Brodeur in 2001 in a head to head matchup known as the Stanley Cup finals. Devils fans tend to forget this fact when they talk about Brodeur being the "greatest" goalie of all time
