I just wanted to let you guys know what a fab job you are all doing. Especially Nem who made me aware of harmonic mixing. I was doing it all along, but the whole trial and error thing is kind of annoying at times.
I've keyed most of my records based on a combination of my ear and mixmeister and just recently brians results have confirmed that I did a pretty good job on getting the correct key. (We have quite a lot of similiar records)
On the ones that I had a lot of trouble on, it turns out (thx to Brian) that they are actually major keys which is why I was having trouble finding them b/c I was always looking for the minor keys, but luckily I still got the key right.
Also I have found that if you are not sure about the key but feel you are pretty close, just mix it quickly into tracks that you know you have keyed correctly and see how it mixes, if its perfect, chances are you are right. If it mixes good (but the energy has changed, maybe up or down) perhaps you are just 1 number of on the camelot scale, so maybe move from say 1A (if this is what u think it is originally) and try it as a 2A and see if that works. Then try it with a 3A and see if it still sounds nice mixing with that track. Therefore it mixes with a 1A and a 3A but sounds best mixing with 2A tracks, so it must be a 2A.
Thats just the method I've been using and it works for me.
Keep it up guys,
Kev
yeah, thanks for all the effort Nem, and brian, and everyone else.
I think i am gonna key up my records, they are all the much sharper weapons when you know how to use them!
Big ups on the database, i can't wait to check those out. Guess I should get mixmeister, and mixshare, and check out the database too.
I got a guitar here as well, haven't really touched it since i got my decks, but i think it is time to break it out, i can play barre and power chords, but those are major i think..
time to study up.

| Originally posted by Nemesis44 Mono (Airbase, Jezper Sderlund or whatever else he calls himself)- Rise does indeed go in Am. The theory would suggest that they wouldn't go that well together but the reason why it works here is because Mono-Rise is a much slower record in order to play it with Cern at around 2% you need to play mono at about 6% which is a difference of 4% (yup my maths is amazing...) which pushes Mono closer to the A#m range than the Am. So you are actually mixing a D#m (2a) into a A#m) (3a). Nothing wrong with your ears though.. this actually works pretty well so just keep it at it. Simple rule is usually if you have more than a 3% difference with tracks it will sound real bad. Over 4% and you are actually closer to the next note up so you may have to treat the record differently and think about perhaps mixing it with some different records. Cheers Nem |

thanx for all the hard work you guys are putting into it!!
are we any closer to the database with just the 1 list yet ?

I have really shitty ears. I am almost always stuck between 2 minor keys and I dont know which one to go with!
I wish there was a sure fire way to key your records

Keep up the good work, it's very appreciated.
Nem : DK8 - Murder was the Bass...I've been playing this one as a 9 instead of a 6. What do u think about this?
Brian : Endre - Kallocain (Robert Nickson Mix)...I've been playing this one as a 2. And Ferry Corsten - Punk I think fits better as an 11. What do u think?
Hmmm, I just had a relisten and I think u guys r right about endre and dk8.

Useful website in terms of info but to be honest the majority of tracks in that list are old or waaay to commercial for my tastes. Some are also wrong.
