Amazing set from paul, even though I couldnt make it to the meetup , it seems every time i mean to make it to a meetup something pops up and i cant be there.

Oh well, Paul was def. on his game and destroyed every1 there. I was amazed how many people closed the place out. Last time I was at Roxy, Really too many good tunes to name, my throat is so sore from screaming and singing.

normally, luis diaz bores me to death opening for pvd. but last night his set was good after two years. i dunno what he's like in another context. never hear about him!


didnt you guys notice they did some work in roxy? it looked much more like a club, like one large room. the ceiling aside from the metal things that hold the lights, was much much higher than it used to be... that was nice. and the booth on the floor was key.

I LOVE THAT LIGHT!!!!!!!!!

Like everyone else said... hot as balls, too packed, rude people dancing and swinging all over the place & smoking, etc. Overall a great time.... Wish my body could have handled the entire 6.5 hours.

Sorry fellas, but I simply don't feel the same way about his set. Aside from hearing a few new tracks, nearly half the tracks he played on Friday night were played at Summerstage in August.

This is my point: To me, part of a DJ's responsibilities is to educate the crowd. Although he did this for me, I feel he could have done more. When amatuer DJs (who can only wish to have half the skill PvD possesses) have the ability to trainspot a good 40% of the music he played, it doesn't make anything he does exiting.

I didn't want to make the comparison, but since people are convinced that he's the best DJ in the world, let's take a look at Danny Tenaglia, Carl Cox, Digweed, Sasha, Howells, etc. Do they all have different styles? Yes, but they also share a few commonalities, and one especially for this argument's sake: their peak hour tracks are a combination of the big tracks everyone knows along with nuclear bombs that should stump the snot out of you, make you forget that you're a music snob, and just let you get stupid on the dancefloor. The crowd is blown away and they consequently crown that DJ with demi-god status in their lives.

For the exception of my first PvD night in NYC in November, I have never, EVER, felt this way with him. He would be play the big hot track of the moment, then follow up with, say, Born Slippy Remix, Wavy Gravy Remix, or Jaron Inc - Overflow. And as I said already: yes, that IS his style, but again, it takes away from fulfilling his DJ responsilities and maximizing the experience for everyone. You're telling me that he couldn't he follow up Holding Onto Nothing with a record that has some nasty 10 minute buildup that would make JP, Michi, David Scott, Tom, and the rest of the best PvD trainspotters scratch their heads going "what the fuck is THIS??!! AAAAAAHHHH!!! INSANITY!!" ?? His unsurprising tracklisting makes his overall set monotomous.

A night out at the Roxy for PvD entails more than what he plays. It's become a chance to see some old faces, meet new ones, gawk at the fine ladies, laugh at the rookie clubbers and PvD virgins, and look at cool lazers. The vibe contributes to a good 60% of the experience. This is what concerns me, since the major reason why I go is the music. For me, the vibe comes in second.

You have a very good point however I believe that the vibe runs off the music, and the music runs off the vibe.
For instance, if your in a sleeper crowd the DJ normally pulls out a few hard tracks.
And, the other way, if the music isn't too great your not going to have a good vibe.

Each element feeds off the other.

Thats just my interpretation

In terms of track selection, yes your absolutely right. Paul played a lot of "semi-oldies". Not like wavy gravy, or born slippy old, but a few months ago old. I think that by doing this we don't forget the songs that we loved two months ago.
Some DJs may not want to just showcase the newest tunes - that's what we have ASOT for - They may just want to get the crowd going, and the best way a band does that at a concert is to play the fan favorites, and then go into some new stuff.

I see what your saying, 100%. However the only real answer can come from Paul.

New tracks are a lot of fun to bounce to because you dont know what to expect. But at the same time, when you look around you and everyone throws down their hand when a beat drops out for the break, because they know the song... well, I think that creates a sort of atmosphere you really can't get anywhere else.

My only thought is that PvD DID NOT play Tiesto-Traffic at the Roxy but he should've, as it would have made the set 1000000000000 times better. In fact, since Traffic was the highlight of the Central Park set, it should've been the only track he should have repeated. But he's probably bitter that he's not #1. bahaha

I'm glad he didn't play Traffic!

As for Highmay's post, I agree somewhat with what your saying. I can't tell you how many times I've gone out to hear even amateur dj's and be blown away by their "peak-time" track selection...I think I speak for many people when I say that a PvD set that consists predominantly of "unknown" tunes improves the set from being considered "good" to "amazing." I personally feel that Paul played enough new tracks at Roxy to make me scratch my head on more than one occassion.
Finally, I think that we have to realize that Paul is the gateway to many popular tracks, and its always great to hear tracks that your familiar with. I can't blame him for playing his own productions all the time.... after all, there aren't many dj's today that can play their own productions for 4 hours straight! And to end my point, look around next time at a PvD gig in NY, and you'll soon realize that the majority of the people are not avid fans of the music, but rather, out to have a good time with friends, etc. From now on, I'll try to remind myself not to be too serious when I go out...and just have a good time!
