OK, here I go. The one who's never been to a party, I will warn you now.
For one thing, a lot of girls I know are totally into dancing, but slow, grinding crap. They're scared to dance to anything faster than the newest "let's have sex" song. The guys don't help either really, they don't want to look stupid. Notice I live in a bubble again, I don't know anyone else off the Internet besides me that likes electronic/trance music.
Another thing is probably that girls feel kind of weird jumping around and going crazy because then maybe a guy won't dance with them. It's a really strange dancing culture we've developed.
BTW, I am a girl, I love trance, and I am addicted to the net. And I program. lol So yeah, I don't exactly fit in either. But that's just my thoughts.
alright here's my 2 cents:
being a girl i should know this. most girls in atlanta (i'm not saying all but most of them) are into breaks, house, and dnb. i have tried to bring my friends that are girls to trance events but they would much rather go sit at the globe and hear the locals that spin the other genre's above or if they are over the age of 21+ they go to the swanky midtown clubs that have a tendency of playing from top 40 crap to hip hop. this is something i cannot stand. it's hard to find for me to have a girls night out if i want one because none of them listen to trance. trance parties in atlanta are a sasage fest (not wrong with that) i love a man that listens to trance = ) we need more girls damnit =(

Inviting Chics
I'm willing to start inviting more girls to events that play trance. Here are the reasons I've been slacking in this in the past. The few girls I have taken didn't really like it cuz "it was too repetative"... so the girls that are willing to give it a shot I'm afraid will ruin my night cuz they will be complaining the whole time. Some girls you have to pay for them to convince them to go cuz they are worried about how they will dance to the music, that money could go towards precious vinyl. But despite these reasons I am willing to take one for the team and invite more girls.

Wen i go to an event or club, im not there to pull a bird, im there for the music solely. if i wanna pull ill go my local cheese club, get tanked up on econo vodka, put my ear plugs in, and pull sum slag shaking her rear to 50 cent. I'm not sure how I ended up in this thread, but I'm certainly entertained by the ideas many men have about females and their attitudes towards DJing and electronic music in general.
Perhaps I'm an anomaly...but when I got dragged out to a Misstress B gig, after listening to diva house and trance for quite some time, I was hooked. I was drawn in to the rythmic, cyclical nature of techno, the layering, the complexity. And god damn, I was absolutely fascinated by this amazing woman up there creating it all, ordering her dancefloor denizons to follow her every move, to obey her every command.
I left the club exhausted, and a little confused...as if I didn't know what had just happened. Where did this music come from and why was it so addictive?
So after that I began listening to her stuff, and checking out "techno." The loops, the tribal, the drums, the snares, the high hats just pulled me further and further in. About a year and a half after that first experience, I bought decks and techno records and just went to town...6 months after that was my first gig and I take every chance I get to play out for people. And I'm still following Miss B's sound...I've been to about 10 or 11 of her gigs in the last 2.5 years. She never ceases to amaze and inspire me...
Which leads me to wonder, why am I so apparently abnormal, compared to so many other females out there? (in this respect, anyways) Why do so many more men find have this same experience compared to women?
Some interesting theories have been brought up, and I can't say any of them convince me...but that's probably because they just seem so foreign. I just don't get it.
It's actually not the fact that the industry is male dominated. The real fact is that the A List DJ's Rank (or as they call it, the upper echelon of dance music) is a notoriously closed rank. Not many deejays have got into it of late and those who have, got help from the big names. I view dance music as like a mafia because it's hard to get in but once you get in, you are in. Look at the top deejays, most are mid 30's to early 40's and all the others have been left in the dust. Cox, Oakenfold, Jules, Tongy are all 40+ and they show no signs of letting other deejays in. The only real deejay under 27 is Fergie but he had help from Tony De Vit. I don't think it is baring females, it bars males, the dance music scene is pathetic. I mean you look at drum'N'Bass and jungle, run basically by Grooverider and Fabio and if they like you, might get in. THey don't like you, no chance in hell, hence why DJ Rap got fed up of the politics and moved to LA. DJ Krust met MC Tali and instantly liked her and she got in to the ranks. Lottie is in the A List deejays, Sandra Collins is as well, expect more in the future when hopefully the old guard decides to STFU and spend time with their kids and stop touring as much. So in short, I doubt it is the male dominated industry...view it that way but I think it is more of the old guard not giving up anything in a rediculously hard to achieve anything (male or female) industry.
In my experience, I think girls dont DJ because they know people likely dont respect them for their skills, they just are like 'wow, look at her tits!' That being said, if i heard a technically good female dj, id go see her. oh yeah and if all a girl wanted to do was make money, she should learn basic beatmatching
give it a few more years and I think you'll see alot more women coming out and showing us what's up. not to be a sexest or anything, but if you look at history, most of the time men dominate fields (whatever it may be) then women come and out and show us how it's done.

Well, as i see this topic more then the original question. Now it is about producing, djing, dancing.
I think most questions answered, but we haven't talked about producing as much as it is necessary 
And please, girls, skip my message, you won't like it 
First of all what we looking for : a female producing trance / other edm music. In this case the female needs to find trance interesting, needs to have a good computer / instument / internet knowledge / creativity / lots of time.
Look at the male producers : most of them spend hours or even days in a studio. It is so boring for a girl. Girls like chating, dressing, buyin clother, dancing for some crap music. But most of them don't like spendig hours with technical stuffs.
There are lots of such hobbies / jobs. Look at the programmers, the mechanics, architects, etc. They are all engineers. If you want to be good in your job, then you will need to spend lots of time in front of your computer, or in front of electronic devices, or in front of your desk. Do you think most of the females likes such things ?
Also all the engineers have a so-called "logical thinking" which means they can see/define the world with some hard lines or rules without EMOTION (!) It is easy to see that the one of the thing define females behaviour is the emotions. No emotion = girls don't like it.
If you are a good producer / programmer / engineer, then you sacrifice a big part of your life. Because you want to be in that hobbi/job what you do. It isn't sound very well for a female, who wants to "life her life", looking good, chating, etc.
I think all these things is in our genes. I know there are some female exceptions (even in this topic), but all these jobs/hobbies are not for the females. And it is good, because when god created us they assigned us diffenent body and different skills.

and so on... I hope to begin with it when I work later it was kind of funny that he compared it to a maffia that's all I can say about this subject.
I remember reading an article by sister bliss and in it she said that as a female dj, she doesnt get respect like other males.
She basically said along the lines that she had to work ten times harder to prove her skills then some guy off the street.

Last year, BPMTV here in Canada did a documentary on this topic...they interviewed some more prominent female DJs (Barbara and DJ Heather come to mind) and explored different attitudes towards women in the music field, both as DJs and producers.
I taped the last half, but I may try to get a copy of the full program...very interesting.
The worst part about the industry is that women get paid much, much less than men - although this happens in every industry, it happens much more in the music industry. One of the female DJs they interviewed estimated that women get paid as little as one fifth of what their male counterparts do.

Ah hell, why is rock music mostly male dominated? Of course there are female rock stars, but rock is a much easier scene to break into so there's going to be more variation.
Music in general is more male dominated, look back at all the great composers- Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven- all men. All the biggest selling music artists in general, whether its Elvis, Queen, Bob frickin' Geldof, all men.
As for listeners, I don't have a clue as I'm male, but lots of my female friends listen to dance music.
Your historical examples are just a demonstration that society has been sexist for the last couple millenia. They don't address the issue at hand. Does the status quo have sexist barriers? I don't buy that there's some genetic programming that makes girls like trance less.
