If anybody was wondering about the stewards enquiries...
The incident between JPM & MS was decided to have been just a racing incident and no action has been taken. JP said this:
quote:
If he was braking that hard he should have done it in a different place not in the middle of the tunnel. Its very hard to judge. I moved offline to try not to hit him and he came over exactly to where I was. I didnt have anywhere else to go. It was so unpredictable. He just stood on the brakes and you could see the left-front locked for quite a while. As soon as I saw the smoke, I straightaway tried to avoid him but there was nowhere to go. Im not going to blame him and Im pretty happy I didnt do anything on purpose. I would put it down to a racing incident. If he wants to say anything else, I dont care really. My mind is pretty clear. We had a similar problem in Austria last year on the parade lap and I couldnt keep up with him because of the way he did it. And look at what happened with Jenson in 2000 at Monza. Jenson had to throw it off the track to avoid him. So its not the first time its happened its just the first time hes been affected by it.
quote:
Mirabeau and Loews is a bit tight and I wasnt in his way anyway. I just wanted to let him by in the tunnel. Even if I had gone on the throttle I had only fourth gear and I couldnt do anything, I just went to the side, went off the throttle and waited for him to pass me. Anyone who looks at the video will see that I went to the inside and stayed there. There was one-and-a-half cars between us and so I dont see how I pushed him anywhere. Especially in fourth gear. He was going pretty fast and was pretty far to the outside, so I dont know what hes complaining about. He should just calm down. If he took more care then he wouldnt end up in the barrier. Its not my f***ing fault! He was just too late when he decided to pass me. I dont know what he did and I dont know what he was thinking, honestly. Obviously he is frustrated and tries to blame someone instead of admitting to himself that it is his f***-up. |
Kliens Monaco accident proves extremely costly
When Christian Klien crashed out of the Monaco Grand Prix and into the barriers before the Loews hairpin, he lost more than just the chance of scoring his first points for Jaguar Racing.
Embedded in the R5 nosecone was a flawless Steinmetz diamond worth in the region of 140,000. After the Austrians shunt, it vanished into thin air.
That will be the most expensive drive Ill ever take around Monte Carlo, said Klien afterwards.
The diamond, roughly the size of a shirt button, was set into a steel ring on the nose of both cars as part of an exclusive Steinmetz sponsorship deal publicising the forthcoming Oceans 12 movie. Only one, however, returned to the pits.
There was speculation a fan or light fingered marshal may have pocketed the stone.
Someone here has walked away with more than a motor racing souvenir, commented Nav Sidhu, Jaguar Racings head of Formula One communications.
Both Steinmetz and Jaguar Racing were saddened by the loss of a unique piece of Grand Prix memorabilia that was destined to be auctioned for charity at a later date.
Ooooops!
They should've know better than to stick on on the front of Klien's jag.

got this from the ITV F1 website

Formula 1 is revising its qualifying format as of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 11. Replacing the existing single car sessions will be a one hour period split into two 20 minute sessions, with combined times from both forming the grid spot. Each car must complete six laps in each of the timed periods with the fastest time from each aggregated to produce the overall grid time. Both sessions will be run with free fuel levels, meaning a return to flat out qualifying with cars in their optimum specification. The parc ferme rules will continue but teams will then fuel the cars after qualifying in preparation for the race. Many of the teams are believed to have pushed for the second session to be run with race fuel levels but Ferrari's Jean Todt pointed out that if fuel conservation was a factor, drivers would then crawl round on their in-laps having set their quick time, leading to potentially hazardous situations.

Even though the one flying lap rule shows how much skill a driver has, i'd really like to see the old qualifying back, which gives more chances to the less fortunate drivers.
^ plus it's more entertaining to watch as well.
the 20-20 system that's due to come in at Silverstone is far from perfect, but at least we'll have some action on the track. yesterday's qualifying session was extremely boring, because a few drivers did not take to the track because of a mechanical failure. we had to wait a couple of minutes before the next man was out on track.
with the new system, there will be much more action. and adding up the times from both sessions will be interesting as well. although it doesn't quite make sense, as the cars will not be fueled up for the race. it would have been better if the second session consisted off a single qualifying lap with race fuel on board. the grid would then be an accurate translation of the true performance of the cars and the drivers, as the first session would show how quick the cars are with low fuel, and the second session with race fuel.
but it's definitely going to be interesting.

i see your point, but as there will be two short sessions in the near future, there's bound to be a lot of cars on the track during the entire session. so it's possible for Michael Schumacher to get stuck in traffic and never have the chance to have a clean run and to put in a good lap time.
Michael rarely makes a mistake, so the single-lap qualifying format didn't exactely help shaking up the grid.
ps the GP was extremely boring again today

Great job from Button once again! You don't see him at all in the race but at the end he's on the podium. Like a ghost in the night
there are rumours that hekkinen migth drive for bmw next season... didn't think he was gonna return
anyone knows more about this? is it just bullshait?
hehe, i don't think Hakkinen will make a return mate, he's living a happy life with his family..
If Hakkinen were to return he would put both current McLaren drivers to shame even at his age. Being a Ferrari fan Mclaren have been strong rivals with us for ages, and i must say the only Mclaren driver i have ever liked is Mika. He isnt cocky and he can drive better than Kimi and David put together ('98 and '99 world champion).
I think he is the only driver that was a major threat to Michael. I heard rumours of Jaques Villenueve returning for Williams 2005 ? That bloke is a joke even though he won in '97.
first driver for Williams next year is almost certainly going to be Mark Webber. but there is indeed a lot of speculation about the second driver. one rumour is that Jacques Villeneuve will make a return to F1, and that he is willing to be payed a lot less than he used to be. that would be very interesting IMO, as there's always a lot of action and entertainement when Villeneuve is out on track.
another rumour is that David Coultard is to return to Williams. that wouldn't be the best option i think, because, as you say, David is not good enough. he is fast at times, but too inconsistent.
mclarens new car MP4 - 19B has been tested today.
this is an upgrade from the car they uses now so the mechanical parts is mostly the same, but it has a totally different body.
so it's more aerodynamic than their previous car.
the tests confirms that the new MP4 - 19B is much faster (according to Adrian Neway)
what do u think? will this one last all laps?
24 july in germany is suposed the be the first race with this car
btw..here are some pictures: http://www.xpb.cc/event.asp?e=f1-2004-silv03&s=mclaren
Webber WILL be in a Williams next year, no doubt about it, however Flavio Briatore isn't ruling him out for Renault (He is actually contracted to Renault). However, I don't see Renault changing their line-up, especially with Trulli hitting form.
Jaques Villeneuve will not return to F1 in the near future imo. He will end up in IRL or sportscars. I reckon Williams could do worse than DC as their second driver (JV for instance), I think DC will be back to Williams, or maybe Nick Heidfeld? He might be worth the punt, I believe he is very under-rated.
I would have said Scott Dixon until a couple of days ago for the second Williams seat. (He just re-signed in IRL) He outpaced all but Montoya in a recent test of all Williams drivers.
As for qualifying, Mark Webber had a good idea where they have 20 minute session to decide the order for the 1 lap shootout. The shoot-out should remain, just look at Australian V8 Supercars for how exciting it can be. The problem with having sessions is that the big guns will not come out until right at the end of the session - BORING. At least with shootouts you can follow each car, and there is the tension - will he? will he? will he?
You can't tell me Mark Webber's Jag, or even Jenson's BAR coulda made it onto the front row in a session format... bullocks, Ferrari front row again, and again, and again etc. The only way these guys will make any sort of mistake is under pressure, and 1 lap shootouts are pressure filled. Knowing that you have an extra lap in case you stuff up is no pressure.
Thats my two bobs worth
Webber going to Williams might be the best thing for him. Fisichella is also under-rated and is on the same pace as Heidfeld, I would really like to see Fisi in a better team next year. Perhaps Williams?
Good point on the qualifying system, however i can't see that happening to formula 1. It will be the same imo, the FIA changed the quali system to make the grids more interesting. And look what's happened, not much has changed you still have Ferrari at front - by a bigger margin than ever.
I'm sticking by the one lap shootout, its a tops idea. It does show real driver skill under pressure, Schumi has the most skill, thats why he is at the front but behind that it is being mixed up, like Malaysia or Imola.
You will never get Schumi away from the front, short of docking him 10 spots for turning up to the track.

My my, a strategy from ferrari that proves perfection. At the beginning i thought ralf was going to storm the race but i was very wrong. Williams and Toyota disqualified for using illegal brake cooling ducts. This makes the fifth 1-2 finish for ferrari so far. Bad luck to Alonso & Trulli cause i thought they really had a chance of getting to the podium. Well done to fisi and the new Jordan driver Timo Glock
And for once all the least experienced drivers moved forward in this interesting race.

5 pitstops indeed, how on earth did he end up so high?
anyway, i believe Renault were the fastest team out there yesterday.. Alonso was hauling in the leaders at a rate of 0.5 seonds a lap before he had to retire with technical difficulties.
To make 5 pitstops and pull in 7th (ending up 5th after disqualification of williams & toyota drivers) is an amazing effort. Even though he was far from being on the podium it shows that when a drivers concentration is 100% a high position can be accepted. Congrats to Kimi for putting up with a difficult race exceptionally well.
