It is because we would have gotten a lot more for him if he hadnt been on bad terms with fergie and ofcourse barca paid less for ronaldinho cuz he was playing for a poorer club. When it was just united that were after him, pSG were letting him go for 7-8 million pounds before barca and a lotta others jumped on to the bandwagon. You have to remember that Barca are also in huge debts at the moment and have to be economical.

Jonathan Woodgate will not rush his return to action but feels he could be ready to make his Real Madrid debut this month.

The classy defender left Newcastle fans in a state of shock when The Magpies sold him to Real Madrid in August.

Woodgate sealed the formalities of his move despite carrying a long-standing thigh injury and he is still not yet fit to make his debut.

The England international has started running but is not going to rush his return to action.

"I am just starting to run, which is good," he told Sky Sports News. "I am not putting a timescale on it, but hopefully I will be back playing soon.

"I would like to think I could be back by then (September).

"They don't want to rush me, because they don't want it to reoccur again, which is a good thing.

"I am doing a lot of work. I am in in the morning, then back at night, with a rest in the afternoon. They are working me hard, which I enjoy."

Woodgate admits his move to Real Madrid came out of the blue.

"I was in Munich seeing a specialist over in Germany about my thigh," he said. "My agent called me saying Real Madrid are going to bid for you.

"I could not believe it. I was overwhelmed. I was injured and the last thing on my mind was going to Real Madrid.

"I was gobsmacked at first, and I thought it was a wind-up, but was over the moon when I found out it was true."

Woodgate feels he will find the language barrier harder to overcome than adapting to playing in La Liga.

"The language barrier is going to be hard," he commented. "But to be honest I will enjoy it.

"Some of my friends are going to learn and my mum and dad and my sister, so hopefully I will have it sussed soon."

I wonder how long before, Real had been planning a bid for him?

they got soooooo much money in this team that i think it will be like last year!!! they will do good for a bit...but once the pressure comes and they start to slip a little bit they will get pounded (remember the back stretch of last season?? they were getting man handled in spanish league)
once u have so many amazing allstars...when the team isnt playing all that well players try to take matters into their own hands...that means they might be out of possition to try to do more than what they are supposed to...
in other words sooner or later they will get burned on a counter attack!

Posted by evil_bastard on Sep-08-2004 12:46:

I think now with Woodgate they have really addressed their defensive problems but they still don't have much strength in depth in defence and Woodgate is very injury prone, unless the Real Madrid medical team can do a better job with him than ours did.

Woodgate and Samuel in central defence means that Helguera can move back into defensive midfield which is where he is best.

---------------Casillas-----------------

Salgado----Samuel---Woodgate----R.Carlos

---------------Helguera-----------------

----Figo--------Beckham---------Zidane---

------------Raul----Ronaldo--------------

With players like Morientes, Owen, Guti and Solari on the bench they are as always more than covered for attacking options, but their defensive subs will be shite like Pavon and Raul Bravo.

Posted by DJGolf on Sep-09-2004 00:49:

i think beckham would be in right side and zidane would be in center, isn't it right?

Posted by Dj Gracjan on Sep-09-2004 04:43:

real likes to put beckham in the middle....altho he got injured today playing against poland!

No, the normal line up wil be the one written by evil_bastard, with Beckham and Helguera in the center.

And the defense will be weak if both Samuel and Woodgate can't play... wich will be the case of the next match, this saturday against Numancia.

Zidane also plays like a central attacking midfielder, he is not like a left winger but he and Figo play either side of Beckham. Sometimes Figo gets into wide positions but generally they use their full backs for width because Salgado and Carlos love to get forward and attack down the flanks. Helguera's job is to sit back, patrol the midfield and try to prevent counter-attacks. So it's a little bit like this:

---------------Casillas-----------------
-----------------------------------------
Salgado----Samuel---Woodgate-----R.Carlos
--|--------------------------------------|
--|--<=======Helguera=====>----------|
--|--------------------------------------|
--|---Figo----Beckham----Zidane---------|
--|--------------------------------------|
--V---------Raul----Ronaldo-------------V

I don't know if Camacho will change the tactics though. If Samuel or Woodgate are injured he might put Helguera in central defence.

I can't find any English sites reporting this but I found this from the Spanish media today:

It says that Woodgate is being investigated for possession of cocaine and that this may explain why Newcastle decided to sell him so quickly.

quote:
Woodgate, bajo sospecha

Espanyol beat Real tonight 1-0.

One of the craziest games I have seen. Only saw the highlights but commentators said the refs almost looked payed off. 3 penalties given to Real, Carlos got 2 yellows but didnt leave the field, and they were given 6min ET. Doesnt matter in the end as they lose again! YEAH!

Actually, Real Madrid only failed 1 penalty, the other 2 were against them. Plus Salgado and Samuel saw the red card.

But this is not a good reason for Real Madrid play, I haven't watched the match but I'm sure that Espanyol deserverd the win.

Posted by Dj Gracjan on Sep-19-2004 04:26:

ya well once u get that many players on a team they all try to be better than their teamates and thats when they try tooo had and fuckup and they lose like that!!
