Speaking of google maps, some very cool info I found for the techies here:
Mapping Google
I'm not sure how accurate all of it is, and a lot of it's way over my head, but interesting nonetheless just to see how much development must have gone into this beast...
google earth is the craziest program ive ever seen
Gmail Quoting
I found a neat trick with gmail.
If you highlight a part of a received email before hitting "r" or "reply" - only the highlighted part will be quoted in the reply.

| Google's 2nd-quarter profit quadruples Web search leader exceeds expectations on strong Internet ad growth SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc.s second-quarter profit quadrupled as the online search leader continued to exceed the great expectations underlying its soaring stock, but apparently it still wasnt good enough for investors demanding even more outlandish growth. The Mountain View-based company said Thursday that it earned $342.8 million, or $1.19 per share, for the three months ended in June. The results compared with net income of $79.1 million, or 30 cents per share, at the same time last year. If not for a charge to account for employee stock options issued before Google went public 11 months ago, the earnings would have ranged between $1.29 and $1.35 per share. That topped the mean estimate of $1.21 per share among analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial. |

Google countersues Microsoft over engineer
As a follow up on the issue discussed here: http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...=30#post4744938
So the war begins....

Google countersues Microsoft over engineer JUL. 22 12:44 A.M. ET Google Inc. countersued Microsoft Corp. Thursday in a legal battle over a prized research engineer that illustrates the escalating tensions between the technology titans. The tussle began earlier this week after Google -- the maker of the Internet's most widely used search engine -- raided Microsoft's management ranks by hiring Kai Fu-Lee to open a new research and development office in China. Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft, the world's largest software maker, promptly sued Google and Lee in Washington state court, alleging a noncompete agreement that the engineer signed in 2000 prevented him from defecting. Google retaliated with its own complaint in California seeking to override Microsoft's noncompete provision so it can retain Lee. In its suit, Mountain View-based Google contends the clause violates California laws giving workers the right to change jobs. Microsoft's restriction is "clearly an illegal restraint of trade," Nicole Wong, Google's associate general counsel, said in an interview Thursday night. "Google is trying to create an environment for innovators. Microsoft is focused on litigation and intimidation." Microsoft spokeswoman Stacy Drake McCredy described Google's complaint as a desperate act. "Microsoft is confident in our case and that Google's legal maneuvers will ultimately be rejected by the court," she said. Google's hiring of Lee triggered a conflict because he had been working on Microsoft's efforts to improve its own search products as a vice president in the software company's interactive services division. He also had been helping Microsoft devise its China strategy. In its complaint, Google argues California laws should apply because its headquarters -- and most of its nearly 4,200 workers -- are in the state. What's more, Google said Lee already is registered to vote in California, pays taxes in the state and plans to buy a Silicon Valley home. But Google's initial announcement of Lee's hiring made it sound as if the engineer will be based in China, overseeing the company's new research office there. "I look forward to returning to China to begin this exciting endeavor," Lee said in a Tuesday statement. Lee signed his noncompete agreement in Washington, where he worked for Microsoft. Before joining Microsoft, Lee worked at two Silicon Valley companies, Silicon Graphics Inc. and Apple Computer Inc. "Google is attempting to manufacture California residency for Dr. Lee in a poorly disguised effort to evade Washington law and renege on the agreement Dr. Lee made to Microsoft," Drake McCredy said. As Google has grown more powerful since its inception in 1998, Microsoft has become increasingly determined to muscle its way into the lucrative search engine market with its own technology. The company unveiled its first internally developed search engine last year on its MSN.com site. Until this week, Google had been publicly downplaying its rivalry with Microsoft, maintaining that the increased competition in the search engine industry would be good for everyone by fueling more innovation. |

Google Offers Hybrid Satellite and Map View
Google Maps now offers a hybrid view which combines their map view with their satellite view. The Google blog has a notice on the update. It appears to use 8-bit alpha transparent PNGs to make it work.

MOUNTAIN VIEW (AP) -- Further expanding beyond its roots in Internet search, Google Inc. plans to launch a long-rumored program Wednesday that provides both text instant messaging and computer-to-computer voice chat. The new program, Google Talk, will compete against similar free services offered for several years by America Online Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo Inc. All are vying to increase their presence on PCs to boost online ad revenue and name recognition. The launch was due to come two days after Google unveiled another free program that aggregates information on a computer desktop. It also comes less than a week after the company announced plans to raise $4 billion in a secondary stock offering -- which some analysts speculated could be used to fund far-flung projects such as Internet telephony. As a newcomer to messaging, Google could face an uphill battle. AOL's messaging program has about 41.6 million U.S. users, followed by Yahoo Messenger with 19.1 million and MSN Messenger with 14.1 million, according to ComScore Media Metrix's July report. Users of those services are unlikely to switch unless the friends and colleagues on their "buddy lists" do the same. The top instant messaging services still do not communicate with each other, though promises of such "interoperability" have been made for years. Google based its software on open standards, so it will work with smaller networks that are based on the same technology. Text messages can be exchanged with users of Apple Computer Inc.'s iChat, Cerulean Studios' Trillian and the open-source Gaim program. Google also is inviting programmers to build its technology into their software. "It means other people and developers will be able to add value to our network by being able to add this to computer games, productivity applications and anywhere else they want," said Georges Harik, director of product management at Google. The new Google program features a basic user interface with few graphics, much like the main Google search site. It does not spawn pop-up windows or display ads like America Online's Instant Messenger. "We'll have an uncluttered interface that allows you to search over your contacts pretty easily," Harik said. "It just stays out of your way unless you want to connect to someone." Google Talk, which is being released in a beta test version, works only on PCs running Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Eventually, the company plans to release a version for Apple's Mac OS X. Google Talk also requires users to have an account with the company's free Gmail e-mail system. Gmail previously was available only to those invited by a current account holder, but now Google is opening up registration to anyone in the United States. Voice chat requires that both the caller and recipient have speakers and a microphone hooked up to their computers. It does not currently offer an adapter to which regular phones can be connected. And unlike Internet phone services such as Vonage and Skype, Google's voice service does not support calls to the regular telephone system. Harik also made clear that Google has no intention of trying to become a popular bridge to the other major instant-messaging providers. "We're not going to do anything like force other networks to interoperate with us," he said. "We're not going to arbitrarily break into their protocols." However, since Google Talk runs on open standards, outside developers who incorporate the service into their programs could try to enable such interoperability. Because of Google's large and loyal user base, the company's foray into instant messaging could threaten the other players, said Sara Radicati, head of The Radicati Group Inc., a technology research firm. As evidence, Radicati cited Google's entry into e-mail, when it became chic to have a Gmail account. "We've seen people show off their Google address," she said. "It's on the level of `Hey, look at my new Swatch. I've got the yellow one while you're still wearing the blue.' ... It's a little thing, but it helps." |

and.......... It's out!

Google announces Blog Search
http://blogsearch.google.com/
If you haven't gotten into a habit of reading blogs yet, you should.
1) The amount of information that is made available via blogs by people like you and me(and people with much higher credentials) is enormous, and is getting even bigger with every new blog/post
2) News spreads much faster via blogs than traditional forms of media
The Google Web Accelerator is back (and hopefully more secure this time).

The big news of the day is the announcement of partnership between Google and NASA, and the news that Google plans to build 1-million-square-foot research complex on Nasa's ground, which is very close to the current headquarters in Mountain View, CA.

BTW, Google also recently hired Vint Cerf, who is considered father of Internet, and is one of the inventors of TCP/IP (protocol that is used to send data). Interestingly enough, Vint Cerf is one of the people involved in the design of a protocol for interplanetary transmissions of data.
So google is poised to take over the final frontier.....
This should be interesting ..
