Mets looking into Odalis Perez.

That would be extremely interesting if we sign him. Could mean one of many things.

Trax gone for a 1b/RF/middle relief.
Glavine + Floyd to Boston for Manny and Minky.
Or we keep 6 starters and have a 6 man rotation.

I want Perez.

Question is can Womack keep up his OB% similar to LY. If so, then I agree, he fits in at leadoff. He can be Mr. Slappy plus 28 SB followed by Jeter who is a perfect number 2 guy. However.....if they got Beltran then things don't fit because I agree Beltran is a better number 2.

Jeter, Beltran, A Fraud, Sheff, Matsui, Posada, Tino/Juice boy, Bernie, Womack. That's: R,L,R,R,L,S,L,S,L

But assuming Beltran is a big if. January 8th is the deadline for Houston to sign him. So we should be hearing something within the next 10 days.

Varitek is better simply by comparison. Posada is though more suited to the Yankees. Just as Varitek is so crucial to Boston. Posada really struggled the 2nd half of LY.

Big Unit for Vazquez, Halsey, prospects and cash

Things may be getting interesting... but I'm still not getting my hopes up.

Let's select the five most intriguing stories of the off-season. In this opinion, they would be the Mets' signing of Pedro Martnez, Boston's signing of David Wells, the Yankees' acquisition of Randy Johnson, Oakland's trades of Tim Hudson and Mark Mulder, and Washington's attempt to lose the Expos before it had them.

But if a weekend signal is accurate, the most intriguing story has yet to happen. If it does happen, it will be a nonmove, as opposed to the Martnez, Wells, Johnson, Hudson and Mulder moves.

The nonmove? The Yankees will not sign Carlos Beltran, the most attractive, and expensive, position player on the free-agent market. But it's not just that the Yankees will not be signing Beltran. The story would be that the Yankees will not even try to sign him.

AND:

The Mets, who are treating Latin America as a second home base this off-season, headed out on another recruiting trip yesterday. This time, they were off to see Carlos Beltran, and Fred Wilpon was along for the ride.

When the Mets pursued the ace pitcher Pedro Martnez earlier this off-season, General Manager Omar Minaya flew to the Dominican Republic alone and had a private lunch with Martnez in Santo Domingo, which cleared the path for the Mets to sign him. The Mets are now serious enough about Beltran to send reinforcements.

Wilpon, the team's principal owner, joined Minaya; Jim Duquette, the Mets' senior vice president for baseball operations; and the special assistant Tony Bernazard yesterday in San Juan, P.R. There they met with Beltran, who is from Puerto Rico, and his agent, Scott Boras, and began negotiating a possible contract.

I'm very curious to see how this works out. The Yankees non-bid would do two things. 1) Make it MUCH easier for us to sign Beltran. 2) Would make us signing Beltran slightly less of an accomplishment because we didn't outbid the Yanks to do it. Anyway... we'll see. Probably no later than Saturday.

Posted by Shamez214 on Jan-04-2005 04:32:

And I've actually been thinking about this. As much as I thought the Yankees NEEDED Beltran because Bernie is gone after this year, I realized they don't. Beltran is an abnormal amount of money added to an already astronomical payroll. They could easily deal with Bern in CF for another year, then move Matsui to CF for '06. After that, say hello to Brian Giles, your new Yankee Left Fielder. And for those that don't know who he is... trust me, after a year you'll be saying 'Carlos who?'

Less of an accomplishment vs. saving $$$?

I'd take saving less bucks over a 'less accomplished' signing

Hard for me to believe that George's ego and dislike for the Mets wouldn't put them into the bidding just to raise the price up for the Mets (If they had decided not to go after Beltran for real). Similar to them talking with Pedro in hopes of driving his price up.

Oh, I would to. But we live in NYC. And you know how the media is. The Mets got a free pass because Steinbrenner said he didn't want Beltran. That's what all the papers will be saying.

I think Beltran goes 8/130.

Yeah... but what if Carlos WANTS to go to the Yankees and George offers him something just to drive the price up and he just takes it?

Wow... you're right! Can't wait till Spring Training. Nice to see all the young bucks. I remember in ST this year, David Wright came up to bat and you heard a guy in the crowd scream 'Come on! You gotta get this kid out... he's # 72 for crying out loud!' Wright then proceeded to get a hit off him. And then came up for the Mets in July and tore shit up.

Glad to see Ryne Sandberg finally make it in the hall of fame

Posted by Shamez214 on Jan-05-2005 06:19:

Definitely. Should've been 1st ballot, IMO.

Though his 1990 season seems a teeny bit suspect...

Beltran Reaches Agreement

The Mets reached an agreement in principle this afternoon to sign star centerfielder Carlos Beltran for $119 million over seven years, making him their centerpiece player.

I was waiting for you to post. Congrats! Good move for the Mets. I'm not disappointed as a Yankee fan really. They have reached their threshold.... that's cool. I said I was gonna be happy as long as they got the Big Unit.

Beltran should star for years to come for the Mets and I'll check out a few games at Shea to take a look.

Once the Mets get guys like Pedro and Carlos and they start winning, then later that wouldn't have to overspend as much.

Posted by trunks1022 on Jan-09-2005 21:21:

i'm happy... but the game's not about winning headlines in the winter. it's time for the mets to start winning!!!

looks like you guys are going to be contenders this year if pedro can get back some of his speed on his fastball. i predict the wildcard for the mets, i dont think they will be able to top atl for the top spot, esp since they got mulder.

dammit, my orioles are NEVER gonna be contenders again, just cant win in the AL East. but at least they show like thye want to win by signing all these players, and hopefully we can get delgado. if that happens, we would be like the colts, all offense and no defense.

The Orioles could be contending if Peter Angelos focused more on his team instead of not fighting the expos/nationals relocation to DC.

Also, how the hell did Ponson suddenly suck last season? That really baffles me.

contract year led to orioles getting taken for fools. ponson got the contract he wanted after a stellar 2nd half of 2003 and is now adding to his midsection girth
