BOA-REDUX

270 Spadina Ave.

416-977-1111

$$$

$30 before 2 a.m.

Open from Saturday midnight to Sunday noon

- - -

Ah, the smell of sweat-drenched youth. The room is suffused with it on this Saturday night at Boa-Redux, as day traders mingle with art students and androgynous dreadlocked partiers. Both floors of the club are packed, and the whole place is shaking with kids cutting loose with no respect for sleep.

It's not a typical nightclub, as you might have guessed -- Boa-Redux is a non-licenced after-hours temple of dance aimed at Toronto's after-party scene, when other clubs have closed down for the night. It's been a dream of owners Tom Vencelides and Rony Hitti for many years, and they've finally managed to follow through on it. Amazingly enough, the club, like its cocky young owners, really does take wing, unlike, most notably, Chinatown's other heavy after-hours club, Film Lounge.

The first few Saturday nights (the only night it's open) have been a little bumpy -- throwing a 26-hour New Year's Eve fest with a party licence evidently confused clubgoers into thinking Boa was a licenced establishment. But while never sublime, the club is still mighty good fun.

The virtues of Boa-Redux are considerable. The most immediately obvious is its gorgeous physical appearance. Carving a two-level dance club from an old Chinatown porn theatre is impressive enough, but it's the clever use of the space that captivates. The second-storey dance area, with its (literally) trippy layout, still has the multi-levelled floor (where theatre seats would have been), creating tiered spaces and a raised pulpit-like DJ booth that's ingenious.

So, too, is the sound, not just in terms of the acoustics but the choice of sound system as well. Vencelides and Hitti have outfitted the club with an Alpha Concept sound system, regarded by many as the highest standard in professional club sound reinforcement. The components, manufactured by German-based Dynacord, blast a dynamic range of more than 115 decibels, which makes it one of the most powerful digital controllers available.

But a good sound system is hardly enough to make for a good time. What makes this club a winner is its faithful adherence to progressive tribal house roots. A lineup of well-picked DJs is a plus, too: Matt C, Miss Honey Dijon, Nick Holder and Sean Miller are on the roster.

What do 1,800 thirsty clubbers (maximum capacity) coming straight from other nightclubs drink along to the back-breaking beats? The beverages of choice are Happy Planet juice, Red Bull and the almighty water ($$$$!).

Boa-Redux -- the name is a reference to the '80s Yorkville bar -- may not be enthralling enough for you to stake out an entire night here, but it evokes enough of the wonder and awe of a hell-raising rave to make it a worthy option.

ABUNDANT C

Club kids have taken a liking to Happy Planet's lovely organic juices, but are poisoning it a notch. After all, man cannot live on antioxidants alone. Keep your ears to the street and you'll uncover two versions of this drink.

Straight version

2 parts orange juice

1 part Polar Ice vodka

1 part Happy Planet "Abundant C" juice (found in after-hours clubs and Starbucks)

In a shaker half-filled with cracked ice, combine the HP juice, orange juice and vodka. Shake well. Strain into martini glass. Garnish with orange twist.

Street version

1 part HP juice in container

1 part Polar Ice vodka

Open a container of HP, drink half of the juice in the container, fill the vacated space with vodka. Replace lid, shake and drink. Keep topping with more vodka.

CLUB LIFE

THE BEVERLY TAVERN (240 Queen St. W.) closed on Dec. 27. There's been much talk about will take over the space, but the owners are still looking for the right tenant. "We want what's right for the block," restaurateur Thai Hua says. "Whether it be a Spring Rolls, the Keg or something altogether different. But nothing's decided yet."

CRISPY ROLLS (263 Queen St. W.) is open. This little Japanese restaurant is across the street from the old Beverly. Taking over what was previously the Big Bowl restaurant, the narrow spot brings more sushi and tempura to Queen Street.

DIFERENT BY EDO (257 Adelaide St. W.) is no longer. Barry Chaim's sanitized chamber of a restaurant was no match for the throbbing nightclubs on the block. Chaim's two other Edos (431 Spadina Rd. and 484 Eglinton Ave. W.) remain open.

I just can't wait to see Chus & Ceballos again at BOA!!

April....feels like so far awayyyyyyy

Posted by chrismack on Jan-22-2005 16:14:

My Suggestions:

a) If everyone seems to have stair issues, (I know I do) don't just put a marker on them, fix the problem. If Charles can eliminate the columns holding the roof of Koolhaus for better sitelines, Boa should be able to start woking on losing some of the stairs. (Yes, I know i'll probably be a major construction project, but even flattening out a few areas and having say... 3 levels) would be a woudl be a massive improvement.

b) Enforce the no smoking rule. The # reason why I and my friends are turned off by Boa is that it's just gross with smoke. Even the smokers complain

c) Coatcheck. When it's -30 outside, why can't clubs plan that EVERY person who comes will bring a caot - and just deal with it efficiently. From an ROI perspective, charge and extra buck and do it right.

d) The dress code is stupid. As somebody else said, we go to Guv, System and Boa to dance... Comfort should trump fashion. If we wanted fashion, we'd all be addicted to the Richmond Street bars along with the 905-ers. It pisses me off when I am out with friends and we wonder if weshould go to Boa and then realize I can't because I'm wearing jeans or skater shoes.

My suggestions...

Has anyone actually been refused entry to boa because of their dress? Just curious.

I personally like the stairs. they can be a pain in the ass to navigate, but I think you'd find the vibe of the room, in addition to the acoustics, would suffer tremendously if the stairs were removed. and aren't those the two most important things about boa to begin with?

Yup, I was -- so was a friend on a different occasion. Granted we were wearing track pants, but it's not like they were crappy track pants either (I had a feeling they wouldn't allow UFO's, so i delibrately choose track pants that weren't as crinkly as the one's you would go to the gym in). Still i was not allowed in cause the bouncer noticed the traditional strip that runs down the side of the pant legs and figured it wasn't up to Boa's dress code

So, reluctantly i went back home and changed into jeans and was allowed in. Frankly i'm not sure which genious decided that trackpants are tacky, but jeans are ok. Obviously someone who has spent a great deal of time posing and probably 15 minutes dancing when they were at a club.

To add insult to injury, i find out that like the smoking rule, the dress code rule is also administered quite capriciously when 3 o'clock rolled round and three dozen guys began to take their shirts off. Needless to say, i was left feeling like someone was taking the piss when i'm turned away for being fully dressed only to find out that once you're inside Boa's hallowed walls, all the rules go flying out the window ! (dress code be damned once the circuit house starts playing huh ? ) So, I'm still awaiting explaination as to how half naked men figure into Boa's dress code, but people who go there with the purpose of dancing (and remain fully clothed) can't wear what they are comfortable in.

For a venue that charges $30 and operates as an afterhours clubs, Boa shouldn't make rediculous demands on what clubbers should wear. Leave the posing for bars and pick up joints, after 10 hours of dancing, no one cares about something as trivial as drss code. To me, it seems hypocritical. I've seen Guvernment bouncers ask people to put their shirts back on, and i'm pretty sure the same is true for System as well. Both these places have a reasonable dress code. The only place where i've been where the jersys off rule is ok is comfortzone, but at least they are fair and allow people to wear what they want which to me is what an afterhours place should do.

Anyway, that's my only real gripe with Boa, and hopefully someone will read this and realize how silly their dress code really is.
Jus my 2 cents on what is otherwise a very good club to party.

The stairs don't really bother me, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a reflective strip along the edges as a precaution.

Yeah. Az was wearing nylon (plastic-like) puffy pants and got sent home.

He ended coming back 20 minutes later and rocked his ass off, so I guess it is ok.

. . .

Well I was there over the weekend and the constuctuion of the DJ both is under way! I think Trip is doin' a wikkid job and whomever else is workin' with him on this! It will be in use I think by this weekend, should be good.

I think that it will be great - and I believe it will improve movability aroudn the dancefloor. Meaning, right now with the DJ Booth by the stair case; is a hassel with "traffiC" jams through the dancefloor and that area.

I will be there to party this Friday and I hope the DJ booth is in the centre, to see if there is difference!

See you there!

a) I've thought about this numerous times. If the flattened the club out, especially the dancefloor area then that would be sweeeet.

b) I haven't actually had a problem with the smoking yet...

c) Yea, coat check is definately something that needs a little work: especially when it's a busy night

d) Everytime I've gone to Boa I was wearing jeans and white runners. Haven't had a problem.

how many times does it need to be said. its an afterhours club. it opens at 1am for fucks sake.

i seem to have pms this morning...

steve.

If Boa ever gets a permanent liquor licence then it'll definately lost a lot of it's quality. Some people just don't get the fact that by eliminating alcohol, they eliminate almost all of the jackasses that would litter the club with their presence. Let them stay at Guv or System.

Lastnight out of the blue, a concept that would somewhat relate to this came to me. And it was our MSN convo Pete (believe it or not), that sparked my thinking. I'm going to share it with Rony and Carey, and see if its possible.....

You're absolutely right. We don't need alcohol (especially on Saturday nights), although it has seemed to work on the occasional Friday and the response has been great so far.

On occasion, I'm all for it. Completely ignoring the alcoholics would be stupid, just like completely ignoring trance, breaks or techno would be too. Variety is a good thing; and Boa is doing the right thing by supporting all the different clubbers in the city, but doesn't do it enough to stray away from its core. Right now it's a good balance.

As for flattening the club out, I've thought about this for a while. I even have a good picture in my head of how it would look Even if only 1 step was eliminated, like the one that's nearest to the booth, would make a big difference.

I have a problem with people smoking in the main room when it gets to the early hours of the morning too.

But there are people who even complain about the smoking lounge. I mean come on, if you don't want to breathe in smoke, DON'T GO DOWN THERE!

But it's so much easier to just bitch and moan about it until they finally do something. I mean, I can't possibly stay upstairs and just have fun knowing that I can get cancer if I happen to venture downstairs!!

I agree but to sort of comment on it more, since it IS an afterhours club what's the huge deal of having booze in the club for an hour? I mean they already have it for a Fri (or do they open later then)? I don't see a huge deal about not having it...unless it's not feasable on a Sat due to not making enough $$ on it. But still that wouldn't make sense because they would make money on those that want to buy the booze no? (no matter how small).
I like the club, sound is amazing, other then that, the only complaint I guess you could say is when it opens, why not open at 11 at least? 1am is just too late for people who aren't on any sort of substance. (Jeff, you're an exception :P) I've sayted late to my share or parties but starting that late kills me ability to get into the mood because by 5, sometimes 6 or 7am I'm even more tired because of the inability to get into the "groove" partywise more time is needed...IMO.

yup, a nap is the best thing.

go to sleep about 9 wake up at 2 and head out.

Chris, you see all the delays for licenses and such for other clubs? That is why Boa doesn't get a liquor license.
