jayx1, get a fucking grip....

stop comparing a sports venue with landmarks like the CN Tower and the Eiffel Tower, let alone the Louvre or the Empire State Building....

the SkyDome is a sporting venue, will be razed within 50 years, and is hardly recognizeable outside North America....I'm not a fan of the new name (I would have preferred the "Rogers Field" name that was making the rounds earlier today), but the earth isn't about stop spinning because of this....

renaming a sporting venue doesnt pave the way for hsitorical sites to be renamed, so stop acting like thats the case.....

Rogers who? Never heard of 'em.

C'mon folks, maybe if we all just stop BELIEVING that they exist, they won't exist!

I actually agree with jayx. Some people in TO are just way too passive..

and I think that some people here are just way too concerned about some trivial things, and things that are totally out of their control (and have little or no effect on their life alltogether).

SkyDome was a blackhole when it came to money, and if someone actually invested some $$$ in it, hell, he deserves to name it whatever the heck he wants... if you don't like it, go file a complaint with a local complaint office. I'm sure something will come out of it... one day, or maybe even sooner

I'll be calling it the Rogers Centre out of respect for a man who has been VERY generous to Toronto over the years with his money.

I heard reports that the TTC is thinking about selling its naming rights to the highest bidder.

Imagine saying "im riding the Telus train" home tonight.

This is just another bitch session for you

If Rogers was prevented from renaming the Skydome, I'm sure you'd find a way to blame the Liberals...you'd rip them for interfering in the free market or something like that, lol.

Most of us are aware of the sad state of public transit in this city...and now you're saying you'd be upset if they were to seek revenue from the private sector by selling naming rights?

there is simply no pleasing you...I think you just like to complain.

btw...something is worth only what someone else will pay for it...that's basic market economics!

I agree that it was badly managed.I hope the new owners can improve it..

and 35 million sounds quite cheap, it must be the high running cost

I'm wondering if the people that named it "Skydome" (from that contest long ago to name the new stadium) will no longer have lifetime tickets?

The stadium issue aside, do you deny that the Lieberals are corrupt?

This morning on BT they said that all these people's "contracts" will be maintained

Red face Roger who?

The skydome was a great addition to our city. I do agree that the name is definitly better then "Roger's dome". I believe that most tourist book and other books that describe our city do mention the skydome as one of our important buildings. It's also important that they did not demolish the structure because of lack of funds. Therefore it is a good thing that Rogers bought the building. You do realize that our greatest landmark the "CN" Tower does mark a company's name.

I don't forsee the government ever building another landmark again. What else is there to build? I think the next great building will be all about how great and high tech we are a city. Of course it will be funded by a huge company. All new building will be built by companies from now on.

I hope companies do start buying into our public transportation. WE NEED a better transportation system. I want more stations to be built.

Posted by starsearcher on Feb-03-2005 15:56:

You can't build better public transportation without density...Toronto's entire "design" is to have great neighbourhoods, lots of parks and green spaces, lots of private homes and properties...you can't have a great and effective, and money making public transport system with such design because there's simply not enough density to sustain it!

You can't have both unfortunately...

Posted by Jayx1 on Feb-03-2005 15:56:

Im not advocating a ban. Im saying its a very poor decision and smacks of arrogance. I dont like it. A lot of others don't either. And i don't think major landmarks should be arbitrarily renamed.

I wouldnt support legislation to force the name to be returned. What I want is Ted Rogers to come to his senses on his own!

I would have settled for Rogers Skydome at least

But that name has been incorperated into the structure since the beginning. Plus the CN tower was a privately built enterprise.

Im all for a private transit system.

I hear Toronto's population will be around 4 million in 2020 or something like that. Those nice parks will turn into parking lots if we don't do something about transportation now.

I highly doubt that's true...besides Toronto keeps spreading north and east and west...wherever you look there are new housing developments taking place...problem is - same as before all boring suburbia - public transport will never work in such a situation. Now they are building more condos along Yonge St., primarily in North York...so maybe that will help.
