Judging from your sig, I hope you don't think I'm slow coz I havent disowned trance and let prog be my musical butt-plug.

Been there, listened to that, and actually got bored of most prog quicker than I did of generic trance, currently loving breaks and the few decent euphoric trance tracks about.

Not wanting to sink to your level, but then I guess this forum is the only place you get heard and as such force your opinions so harshly upon others.

Have a gold star for effort

THIS THREAD IS GAY!

I love 99% of the "cheesy" tracks people list here....why? oh wait, i know why......because they sound awesome! Haters of cheesy tracks are just that, haters, jealous of the success of some of the bigger artists who made it to where they are by having talent. Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold. All awesome but so many people consider them cheese. Hell, most people consider Darude cheese, but you know what? Back when Sandstorm came out, ALL of them were listening to it and loving it. Most people here need to shutup about "cheese". If someone loves a cheesy track, great!

And actually, I am an unashamed coffee whore.

Oh fuck off. Talent does not equal success, and success does not equal talent. Get that through your head. And I'm not jealous of anyone, I'm just annoyed at the fact that a dumbass like Armin van Buuren is "one of the world's best DJs".

Who the fuck should be 'one of the world's best djs' then. Your mom?

trance is showing all the classic symptoms of pop music! Fairly talentless people making it big, producers/labels putting out minimum-risk stuff, all the kiddies buy into it, while the band with the poetic lyrics, melodic guitar riffs, lays low trying to earn a buck playing local gigs (just an example). armin has no fucking technical skills! pit him against any hiphop dj, a fair amount of techno djs, etc, and that little guy would fail miserably. being able to mix tracks, getting the newest tunes, and having a bunch of loyal, crazed fan-boys beat off thinking of you and your music, shouldnt, by all means fucking shouldnt make you number one. armin and all his little friends (and all the other DJ's that fit this description, are just bedroom dj's who have made it big, you cant have 100,000 famous producers, they are just some people who are going to make it. Armin made it. doesnt mean he is a fucking god. it means he has put out some decent tunes, and has a radio show. it means he is famous. now how the FUCK, should that entitle him to number one DJ, even if he was number 40, id still fucking question this.

bottom line

all i gotta say is that i would rather listen to the so called "CHEESE" (ex: Ian Van Dahl, MOS, David Guetta, Angel City)
than listen to stupid rap or alternative rock that actually all sound the same.

And those acts such as Ian Van Dahl and the equivalent, they don't sound the same?

This is a very interesting thread.

It's amusing to see people arguing about things I was complaining about back in 1998.

No it's not. Trance didn't start incorporating the anthemic hands-in-the-air ambient washes and snare rolls until 1997. And even then, they weren't very long. Only about 25-30 seconds or so. By 2000, these breakdowns had become a minute long. And now there are breakdowns that are three minutes long.

It's like the people get tired of the same anthem over and over again, so in order to maintain the appeal the producers have to make the breakdowns and the snare rolls longer, louder, and fuller each and every time. Upping to dosage to maintain the high. Bigger anthems, quieter breakdowns, longer snare rolls, faster, higher, more, more more. So ultimately the music is so exalted, so pure, so grandiose, so god-like that it stops behaving like trance.

When will it end? ....when can I again start listening to the music I once loved?

that's the same misguided comment that some people who prefer those music styles would make about EDM.

ignorant to other genres is funny to me... so maybe or maybe not. What does your fav artist/producer have to do with your ability to judge/understand the tracks. Maybe it's you who is closed/narrow minded...

Yesterday I was at a Trance Classics party with a lot of superstrings/supersaws and I fucking love to hear that kind of music! I LOVE IT!

So...finally got that off my chest!

People who say superstrings and saws are shallow and cheese need to hear those songs in a club, and than form their opinion (Ory)! Because there's nothing as good as hearing all those tracks in a club!

Forbidden Fruit by PVD on his 1996 album Seven Ways has a breakdown that last for over 4 minutes, and that track is most certainly an anthem track.

Posted by Sykonee on Feb-27-2005 21:30:

Jam & Spoon's Follow Me (1993) has a super-super long breakdown using primitive saw-waves. Thing is, with that track it's almost done tongue-in-cheek. It's fun.

Breakdowns these days are just too bloody serious. I don't mind a brief interlude here and there but not when it happens all the time and for too long, especially if it doesn't really add anything.

You don't need to take all the rhythm in a song away to introduce a main melody. Plenty of trance back in the day had melodies added while percussion was still going just fine. Even if some percussive elements were faded back for a bit, you'd still have some semblence of rhythm maintained with acid worbles or arpeggiating effects in the background, giving you reason slightly bob your head even if your feet weren't moving.

Oh really? Last time I checked, you needed talent to get to the top. I love all those big name DJs for a reason.....because I thought they had the best sounds. I never went on some website and checked what's hot when I started listening to trance. I just downloaded anything and everything I could find and listened to it and decided for myself. The first guy who ever got me hooked on trance was Paul Oakenfold. One day in 1998 I just happened to be on napster and saw a mix, downloaded it without ever knowing any trance DJ at the time, and guess what? His sound was awesome! Same with Tiesto in 2000, I just got his trance energy mix just to sample who the guy was cuz I never heard of him, and you know what? He was awesome too and I was hooked and knew in 2000 that he would be the next big thing. Same with Armin Van Buuren in 2002 and same with Above and Beyond right now. I listened to tons of other DJs, and many of them in Top 100 list, and I choose myself what I like and what I don't. And guess what? Seems like a majority of people like those DJs' sounds as well, that's why these guys got to the top. You sound like some disgruntled DJ who never made it and now hates on the guys at the top. Your definition of cheesy is what sounds good and therefore usually gets overplayed.....well grow up, if it didn't sound good, people wouldn't listen and the demand for these guys wouldn't exist. I don't listening to crap, but apparently anything that sounds "cheesy" is your defintion of crap.....hey, it's your opinion, not like it's going to change anything.

Posted by Chris T. Dot on Feb-27-2005 22:55:

And one more thing, if you were on top, I wonder if you would consider yourself cheesy. I'd probly be laughing, cuz other people who always think they know better wud be hating on you. Being at the top always comes with the haters below.

BTW: Armin Van Buuren is coming to Toronto March 24th, and I can't wait to go see him

Also, Curare - Schneller Pfeil from 1993 has a 1 minute, 34 second breakdown. Cygnus X - Deliberation from 1995 has a 2 minute breakdown. And if I remember correctly Rabbit In The Moon - East (The Opium Den Mix) from 1995 has a fairly long breakdown as well. Though i'm sure you all know that when Ishkur talks about genres in that way he means most tracks, not all of them, and there are always exceptions.

Though for some reason now I find it very interesting to know which trance tracks had very long breakdowns before 1996, say.

No remix beats the original. That remix is much worse than the original anthem. No dis to Caspar...but still.
