Unless I have it backwards? Some women just like their last names so much they keep it. Such is not the case for me. I was ready to change it legally to my grandmothers maiden name, til I met Graham. I think I can wait a bit (& save the $ in fees) to become a McCullagh. Tho, part of me feels weird losing my obviously Jewish last name, to an Irish one, and I consider hyphenating, but then I remember how tainted the name is now (an albatross, as my dad would say), & then I think 'good riddance'. Oh, but it is. I feel sorry for anyone with our last name- related or not. Sam ruined it for everyone. And if they plan for that son of a bitch to be at my brother's wedding, I swear to G-d I will kill him right then and there. It's him or me, & i have every intention of making him miss every good family affair if I can.

I can't wait to take someone else's name.
I hate my last name. I'm not particularly keen on carrying it on through the generations either.
I would defintely take my husbands last name and my children would have his last name too. It's tradition!!
So long my futures husband's last name isn't Dick or Cock. LOL
I hate my own last name actually so I can't expect my wife to take it...if anything i'd encourage her not to
The thing is that i'm actually going by my father's last name and my parents have been divorced since i was a little kid...so it almost makes no sense...but either way if I was to marry and my wife wouldn't taky my name (even if it was a good one) I wouldn't make a big fuss out of it, I don't think it's that big of a deal.

Originally posted by Jayx1 hell no... I think someone said it best earlier. Whats next? The man wears the wedding dress and the woman wears the tux? As for linsay lindsay.. yeah that would be an issue. But id still want the kids to carry on the family name even if you didnt
Just cause someone decided ages ago that a man's name is the family name doesn't mean it's true...

Originally posted by Jayx1 yes it does. Its called tradition. its the reason we celebrate christmas. Its the reason we drive on the right hand side. Its the reason we do many things the way we do them. Being modern doesnt mean having to forsake tradition.
so you just want to remain traditional...that's ok then

Originally posted by lipstick id keep my last, i dont want kids so that answers that question. hypothetically speaking,,,, if i did have a kid,, the last name would depend, i think i have a pretty good last name... but if the person i marry has a nicer one then,, theyd get that one.
on a serious note:
I have no problem w/ women or men deciding to take a spouse's name, that's a personal choice. I think the best arument for having the same name, is having a family with one name, one unit.
That said, I think it's worth taking a look at the historical circumstances that surround this practice. I've mentioned this in other threads: marriage originated as a western practice for men to be able to keep property among their family lines. When men and women married, all of her possesions became his property and thus she became his property. So in that circumstance it totally made sense to take the man's last name- the woman came under his care.
Now, men and women can own their own property and have the capacity to be equals in a relationship. If me and my partner are contributing equally to a family why should I be changing my name and identity? we are taking care of eachother, he is not taking care of me alone. If anything, I am honouring my parents who DID take care of me and raise me to be a self-sufficient adult by keeping their last name. To me, taking a spouse's name is anachronstic, and under no circumstances will I ever do it.

Pretty much my opinion.
Actually in some cultures, (I know in Korean culture) wives keep their maiden name. I don't know why some cultures put tremendous importance on wives taking their husbands' names. After all, it is the love that is most imporant, no?
And those of you who said depends on whether the name sounds nice or not, do you not think that's kinda shallow? Are you going to be a cooler person because you have a cool sounding last name? [/QUOTE
I'm afraid I havr to concur with evil tree on the shallow part. But above all this is the importance of keeping the family name in existance which goes back to my earlier comment about my last child having both names. eg Tara Shana Gold- Raunelli. The mothers name frist and then the dads. They dont have to use the name but its there to keep the name going! Theres always a pausitive solution to everything!
Michelle New has a nice ring to it!!!
I have enough brothers to carry on CLAYTON... It's a start to a new life so why not add a new last name... NEW..

If my g'f hyphenated out last names it'd be pretty weird;
Jenna-Michelle Martin-Allen
Too many hyphens, haha.

I plan never to get married, or have kids. But, if I did marry I would be opposed to having my wife take my last name - marriage doesn't strip a woman of her identity, history or heritage, nor does it make her an adjunct of her husband or a piece of property. If I did have children I wouldn't feel strongly about whose name they had; it could alternate, or maybe we could arm-wrestle for it...
