Its kind of depressing for me to read these threads, because i just dropped 2 Gs on a turntable set up. Makes it kinda seem like a waste of money, and time to learn how to use em.

No way man...spinning records is still hella fun...you can always keep practicing to try and get to Digweed's level

FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!!!!! SASHA DOES USE A CONTROLLER (and others too) AND TWISTS KNOBS AND PRESSES BUTTONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THATS WHY THE BLOODY THING EXISTS!!!!!!!! HE'S NOT DOING LIVE PA'S!!!!!! HE'S DOING MORE THINGS THE WAY HE DID THEM ON A MIXER, except now its called maven.

wow lets fight over it like little bitches.....who cares, if it sounds good then you should be happy, stop crying, theres families in nigeria sleeping under one blanket.

To anyone who says it detracts from a DJ's skill... DJing is about, more than anything else, playing music to a crowd. Track selection, knowing what they want to hear, that kind of thing. And the medium they use is up to them (well, except for maybe vinyl if all the predictions that it's gonna die out are true.) Beatmatching is 1) not that hard to do after a lot of practice and 2) not the most important thing for playing to a crowd, although good beatmatching does sound better, unless you slip up quite badly not a lot of people are really gonna notice, not everyone is a DJ.

So yeah, I guess I'm pro-Ableton, it's just another way (with some nice features ) for a DJ to play music to a crowd, and if they can do even more cool shit, effects, whatever, with it then that's a plus.

i dont really care if the dj is mixing off 8-tracks.

good music well delivered makes peoPLe dance and remember, thats pretty much the bottom line here.

for the price of just a decent mixer you can buy a good laptop + ableton live ! lol

DJ gear is so overpriced

Posted by chesco on Jun-21-2005 09:24:

i saw hawtin on saturday night there and the whole show just impressed me no end, the guy's a genious and the fact he uses ableton didn't affect my enjoyment, in fact it only enhanced it.

Wich is why I'm planning on buying a laptop and a good controller for Ableton. Been using Live for some time now and love it, both for music production and putting sets together. Haven't tried it for live dj'ing yet as I don't have a laptop, but as I said I'm planning changing that.

I'm thinking of getting ableton too..

i mean.. if all of these pros are doing it, it must mean something good.

I've seen what sasha can do with ableton and it totally blew me away. I'm not the kind of DJ worshipper who "looks at the DJ and see when the next buildup is"

Anyone can jump on the dj booth clapping to "traffic". Anyone can start doing the jesus stance to "communication"

The only crowd interaction i want involved with the dj is when the crowd gives a round of applause for a hell of a show.

Posted by sandstorm03 on Jun-21-2005 11:40:

LOL most of you don't get it. You will not be able to Replicate what sasha does.

your exagerating what i said....

if mixes and tracks were THAT bad, then obviously not

Look at eddie halliwell for example, one of the most freindly and interactive DJs in the world, hes almost made a trademark out of stage diving at gigs ffs (not a thing u typicaly see djs gettin away with)

BUT, his mixing and track selection are still great, he still rocks the crowd, and he doesnt need to be playing 6 tracks at once, yet iv seen him get a crowd into a complete frenzy

WERE AS

if i went to see an ableton DJ and he/she was just fidling about on a Mac instead of making any contact with the crowd i think id get bored, to be fair half of the time you wont be able to tell what there doing anyway itl be so polished....

like ferry says "trance is getting to polished these days, im trying to give it back that rough edge" < Words of a legend

I know. It's not like I can afford to pay someone to do edits for me, like I'm told Sasha does (I'm told it's Paul Rogers @ Sumsonic).

You also probably can't get producers to send you the separate parts of tracks.

Probably not no.

so basically unless you are using a billion fx, Ableton is just a cheap way out of beatmatching huh?

Not necessarily. You can still re-edit, create mashups and add elements to a song, all in realtime. And you still have to put Warp markers to the files (Ablton does not detect tempo 100% automaticly), wich for me usually takes longer then beatmatching on turntables.
Also. I belive that in not so distant future you will be able to buy elements from tracks. Gabriel & Dresden have said that they are thinking about releasing track elements for Ableton users on Organized Nature.

So you think djs out there will be able to do this on the fly and make it sound good?

99% of this is going to probably be done before the DJ even gets there anyway. Then the question gets asked why do you even need a DJ?

In the next version of Live (version 5) it will be easier to do all this on the fly. In fact, version 5 will feature a special mashup feature.

I've been told Surgeon has been doing all this on the fly and I'm also told it sounds very good. I not 100% sure about this, but I will find out next month when he does a gig here.

The biggest advantage I see today for dj's that can't afford to get someone to re-edit for them or get seperate elements from tracks is that you can do transformations you could never be able to do with 2 turntables and a mixer.
If you're interested in what I mean by that, feel free to check my signiture for mixes done in Ableton (the first 2 to be exact).

I can see it now...

Posted by tactik on Jun-21-2005 13:45:

Right, because a dj is the same as an orchestra.

who needs an orchestra when you can do it all on a computer in surround sound

People who enjoy classical music? People who don't like Sasha?

Why are you against it for Classical music. Shit they could probably even mix classical music. Tomaso Albinoni's Adagio vs Samuel Barber's Adagio, i can see it now...
