Clearly the bible was written in a much more conservative age, and needs a fucking update if they wanna keep people interested. Catholicism is holding this back

So why keep the bible then...why not just say...i believe in a God, a higher power and throw that completely dated piece of writing out the window?

You guys are right...the bible does need an update, in fact, in needs a complete re-work so that it actually makes some fucking sense...

a bible specifically designed for colored people

jesus was black, and so were all the children around him.

i couldnt help laughing.

it's like- woah, they're really targeting certain demographics here.

next we'll see- The Bible- for queers

It comes from the story of Soddam. The men of the town attempted to rape an angel so Yahweh destroyed the city. From this story rose the belief that God destroyed Soddam because it was full of homosexuals. I find it odd that people automatically assumed that homosexuality was the sin as opposed to rape. In my mind it would seem that rape is the bigger offence.

Yeah, I'm still looking for where I found out about misinterpretations.

My problem with the idea, is that if you follow the bible to the letter, that is exactly what it promotes...so if you're gonna say you're christian but you dont think gays will burn in hell...then...well you're going against the word of god...

...which means you will burn in hell aswell lol

btw Jamie:

Find me a verse in the bible that says gays are going to burn in hell. We are all sinners, and salvation is a gift that must be accepted. Committing a certain sin doesn't mean we're going to burn in hell. That's a misconception, furthered by fanatics that misinterpret the word and focus on the wrong points.

That burn in hell bit was used by the church in the old days to get money out of people imo. Do religions still advocate that way of thinking these days?

Better challenge.... find a passage in the bible that refers to "burning" in hell. This idea of burning and hell being made of fire and brimstone comes from Daunte's Inferno... "the pain shall be as if one's flesh were burning without end".... the bible makes no mention of fire, burning, or stone. The only thing the bible really says about hell is that it is outside of the sight and love of God.

What I meant to say in my post is that I think any religious teaching should be done only after the child is of an age where he can explore all religions and decide what is right for them. By raising a child in one religion it is inevitable that they will always identify with that religion.... especially in the bad times, the times when one needs their faith the most. As much as I wish you luck and hope you find what you are looking for I can almost certainly predict you will end up either remaining a Roman Catholic or at the very least a christian.... more likely protestant then Orthodoxed.

haha i appreciate your take on it, but as much as i love my mom and respect catholics and their teachings, i am very far from it. i dont practice any religion at the moment, but all my beliefs are in parallel to Buddhism.

Not true. No one knows if you're going to heaven or hell.

Incorrect... no religion states that so long as you say sorry you're cool with the big guy. The term is REPENT, you must REPENT your sins. Which is to say you must a) confess them, b) atone for them, and c) refrain from committing them again.

well without me using the term..... you know what i mean.

this is a question, FYI

Revelation refers to the eternal pit of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, but there certainly isn't a reference to burning in hell. That's where, I assume, people get it from. Either way, that's the wrong concept to focus on. The bible focuses on God's love and forgiveness, not his punishment, especially in the New Testament (which is the new covenant).

What really gets me is this new trend of bible bashing. It's just as irrational as the bible thumpers' undying desire to convert. Can there be no middle ground?

We as humans are small, piddly, insignificant. We are not all there is. I think it's an important value for us all the comprehend. There is a higher power. It's not all about us, us, us. Me, me, me. Mine, mine, mine. We don't have to realize this by means of organized religion.

I agree with Butterfly on all she's said.

Religion and Wars? Aren't wars merely a means of over-population prevention? Of redistribution?

My teacher told me this one day, I just about shat me panties.

Javi, always knowing how to press people's buttons.

Edit* Nevermind, I see your finally elaborating a bit!

I cannot answer this with certainty as I am not the judge of such things.

Based on most christian churchs teachings yes you should be alright if you were to repent after all of that. The question one needs to ask is whether or not such acts can be repented. How does one atone for something so severe.... I mean really, 20 billion is a big blood debt to pay.

Like I said.....

No one knows if they're going to heaven, because

A.It might not exist
B.We don't know if God wants you in
C.You're Going to hell

Depends what's in your heart. God can see through you, if you are just doing it to cover your ass.

I agree that the parent has the right to raise their children in whichever way they think is best for the children. And that's pretty universal.

What I do have a problem with is parents teaching their children about religion at that early of an age before they can truly understand it's concepts. This is especially true for many Western religions where many subjects are addressed in absolutes. An educated responsible parent should recognize she doesn't have all the answers and neither do a single religion. What a parent can do it instill into her child the search for universal truth and trust that the child, as he develops, will pick a belief system best for him.

One thing I love about The Revelation of John that no one ever picks up on (especially the born agains) is the verse that states "the beast shall be cast into the deepest pit, the gate locked and chained, and all the souls set free." This is talking about the end of the war between heaven and hell.... essentially what it says is that everyone gets out of hell eventually. I like to throw that at the born agains when they are doing their street missions, it confuses the hell out of them (pardon the pun).

Posted by sandstorm03 on Jun-22-2005 17:52:

well since this thread is far removed from what Jamie's intentions were id like to add...

IMO people start wars then go
"i want more power"
"oh shit, what can we blame this shit on and get away with it."
"I know the Bible, every one else does"
"good idea"
"It's not that we thought your race should be erased, 'God' told us to do it!"

That stuff has shit to do with religion imo...
