I don't really think it's as easy as a google search or record shop visit to gain an understanding of what dance music has to offer in diversity and quality. There's just too much marketing to get past for new listeners. The advice of people who know is really important in early stages of musical exploration; without "elitists", the forums where such exchanges usually happen just become marketing echo chambers for the newest epic flavor of the week. So I think there's an important point to what Floorfiller is saying.

Some of you are taking him way too literally and saying "oh, well losing one person won't make a difference." But I think he's pointing out a wider sentiment than just his own, and pointing out the wider consequences. For example, I still read the forums, but I just don't bother posting advice anymore, because few of the new faces to trance seem to care about hearing informed opinions different from their own DJ-deification blindness. I'm more likely to receive idiot complaints that I have "different taste" than fans of Andy Moor and Armin's endless Dutch slosh when trying to point out the emptiness of that music. No, I'm sorry, that stuff just crap. I'm tired of people treating trance like a cute Fisher-Price toy, when it has diversity and depth behind it. People should respect that, rather than get offended by the honest opinions of people who have listened to more. This is called tranceaddict, after all.

I really think this is a red herring. It would be different if trance were really going places right now, and the conflict were a matter of the old guard resisting newer trends simply by virtue of bias against anything new. But if there were major movements of quality stuff now like there were at times for trance in the past, I bet most of the "elitists" would be the first people pushing it. People who care about the music will follow the music.

But that's not the case. The "elitists" are not people protecting their old, secure classics against new challengers. A State of Trance and Tiesto In Concert are not artistic challengers to Frankfurt or the British progressive trance of the late nineties, etc.

Also, what's with this constant reference to post counts? I cared for maybe three months, tops. It should be obvious anyone that it can correlate with experience, but is by no means a qualification.

Well its difficult to hear or read about any of the older posters when the only topic you post in is the weekly Tigerclaw Shit Bulletin... aka ASOT thread.

For fuck's sake, if your idea of "helping people out" is actually constructively recommending tracks you like, then I don't think anyone will have a problem.

The issue here is that many of the elitists think "helping out" is saying stuff like "your taste sucks, you're a fucking idiot for liking it."

It's not as simple as people just refusing help.

I'd just like to point out that these "elitists" are bitching and whining just as the newbs are, but I do concede they bitch for a better cause .

I am very new to these forums. This might even by me first post, not sure. I've listened to EDM for about three years now, what got me into the Genre was BT's album Ima. However, only recently have I completely gotten past the typical Tiesto/Armin/PvD fanboy phase.

Soo...if you elites are willing to show your williningness to help somebody who will listen and won't be an asshole, here I am .

I'm interested especially in "classic" stuff from the late 90's and uplifting stuff too, which I am under the impression came a little earlier.

Anything really that sounds good though, I can dig!

Oh, you are right about that. Never question the Discovery Channel. Africa is filled with only animals, and of the fiercest kind. The worst being my nemesis, Nkono Mbutetu. Nkono is the wildest monster you've ever seen in your life. He strikes fear in the hearts of men with abs of steel and sagging pants of parachute. With his sawed-off AK-47 he will gun you down without a second thought for the old blind woman walking in front of you. His do-rag shirt adds extra sleekness to his viperous appearance. Here he is, the fearsome Nkono Mbutetu, practicing an attack stance he learned from MTV Video Jamz, in front of him (out of picture) a brick wall with a baby painted on it:

What about the chicks in Africa? Do they get good fuck? Or is it only animls fucking each other in day light..

This is from an issue of The Economist about six months back:

quote:
Zainabo Alfani was stopped by men in uniform on a road in Ituri last year. She and 13 other women were ordered to strip, to see if they had long vaginal lips, which the gunmen believed would have magical properties. The 13 others did not, and were killed on the spot. Zainabo did. The gunmen cut them off and then gang-raped her. Then they cooked and ate her two daughters in front of her. They also ate chunks of Zainabo's flesh. She escaped, but had contracted HIV.

Over the time i've been a member here and some months before when i was just a reader, i have noticed alot of changes in the overall feel of this place from a friendly community to a rather hostile warzone where pretty much everything not asked by and about "the big ones in the scene" gets bashed to pieces. We all were in the same situation once than those who seek for info and new tunes to listen so we should understand their point of views too instead of "you suck, go home to cry" kind of replies. Except when the thread starters/posters are just plain stupid and don't know what's good for them.

I don't post that much nowadays because there are only a very little number of interesting subjects and my real life has taken more of my time than it did some years ago. I still hope the good vibe of TA returns some day but until then i'll rather remain in the background and bother only with those who really are in need and don't know any other way to do things. Even if i like to help out people in distress and need, seems that most of the people wanting and posting about something for info, are just way too lazy and can't be arsed to do a few secs of googling or using the TA search (which works very well when you learn to use it properly; to those who always say they tried but didn't find anything).

+1

I'll add that I never really liked trance.nu, too many cliches, and much less info.

TA has the diversity, and that's why i love it.

I also noticed the community becoming less friendly.
But lately (the ver last few weeks) i've seen a change back to a more friendly atmosphere.

I mean, elitists share their knowledge/opinion; but they do it with respect, no agressivity. That would be my TA-paradise

Both sides (elitists/newbies) being open-minded.

Posted by eRRaTiK on Dec-11-2005 10:02:

nobody is forcing anybody to post, and nobody is forcing anybody to not post.

you do as you will. whinging ain't gonna change anything on an intarwab forum. as a self-proclaimed "elitist" you of all people should know that.

i certainly appreciate the input from the elitists, they have shown me the light when it comes to EDM.

as time goes by there remains only two constants - dj sammy is the man, and ishkur is god.

Now Floorfiller stfu and get back to the COR
