Back in August, Max Graham played at Spirit in NYC. The openers for that night played psy-trance at 145-150. Read the reviews for yourselves and see how happy everyone was with the flow of that night. While lots of people thought the openers were good, all the comments were about how that style of music shouldn't have been played before Max Graham. http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...threadid=288243

Dictating setlists isn't cool, but from my understanding, that's not what Armin's booking people are doing. There's still a lot of non-Armada tracks below 130 that do well to start the night off. All that he's asking is to not play to hard and don't play all of the tracks that him and his label discovered and signed or created themselves.

Sadly, the art of warming up properly is one that less and less DJs master.. Most bedroom DJs only have that peak-time two hour slot in their minds when practicing at home.

But still, you're right.. I'd expect a warm up DJ to do what he's hired for, warming up, too. Not banging the brains out of everyone at 10 PM.

so true...sometimes i think it takes more skill to warm up a crowd than play peak times. and if he has any skill..he'd kno how to play before armin. Knowing how to warm up should be common sense.

The last time I saw Armin was in NYC and Remy opened for him. Remy was out of control and EVERYONE was on the dancefloor going wild. Armin hit the decks and started it off Proggy and slow and built the set incredibly from there. Honestly, this is the same thing that happened in June and March when I saw him. So I call "BS" on the thread starters claims. Armin knows no matter what he does he is going to get the crowd rolling.

I saw markus open for armin 3 times. It works perfectly.

who honestly cares
if a big dj is soo big...shouldnt he/she have material that no one will hear..
its easy to play a set on the spot..and its usually the best i think.

 that's just common knowledge...

OMG HIS MANAGERS REAFFIRMED WHAT AN OPENING DJ SHOULD BE DOING IN THE FIRST PLACE! THOSE BASTARDS!!!!!!!!11

Not to take partial sides with Armin or anything, but seriously... All they did was reitterate what an opening DJ should already know. Granted they shouldn't have to do that at all, but it's not a crime.

Posted by tubby on Dec-20-2005 01:27:

should be common knowledge, but it seems every trance international that comes to sydney gets supported by hardstyle dj's. there aren't many big name locals who play trance, so the hardstylers get on and bang out 150bpm noise before and after the main act. I'd be very happy if the main act set out guidelines for these locals to follow. I'd be happier if they chose better supporting dj's, but without a following they're not going to attract the numbers that a promoter needs.

for the first time in 3 years yes we do... but theres a hardcore rave on the night after which'll keep the numbers down which is why we lost it in the first place... hardcore killed this town for decent music i'm prolly gonna do both brisbane and melbourne

see that's what annoys me... if markus warms up for armin & goes up to 135bpm, then armin should bloody well start at 135 or higher without whinging about it, not disrupt the flow of the night just for the purpose of making a grand entrance and building his own journey irrespective of those on before him... that just reaks of ego-tripping to me

obviously this only applies in reason... if someone warmed up for him with a hard house set he wouldn't exactly be able to follow on too effectively... but any club respectable enough to book someone of his calibre should have warmup DJs who know what they're doing. if they know how to structure a night & create decent flow then they shouldn't be forced to play prog under 130.. that's just silly

I was at air on saturday, and i think it worked perfectly. The warmup moved virtually seemlessly into Judge Jules, and he played good tunes, and Armin came on and continued to play good tunes. t all seemed to work very well together. So what if Armins manager has to tell openers what to do. If it all works well, isn't that the best thing for the paying public?

Posted by isoterra on Dec-20-2005 02:10:

and -1 to anyone who posted something along the lines of 'omgz0r who fucken cares?!?'... it's a discussion forum you tards; if no-one cared then no-one would be posting.

yes... but jules wasn't playing under 130bpm (i wasn't there but would assume this pretty safely)... if it still worked well then that kinda proves his managers don't need to be so fussy when dealing with a decent club

it's flogging a dead horse and there hasn't been anything new contributed to the discussion in the past 2 or so pages...

who cares???

eROs.au - shall do

The last couple of times I saw Armin ..he had nothing on Blank and Jones and NU-NRG....they killed him...i mean he played a great set and all but it was very predictable...no jaw dropping tracks or killer buildups, jsut a nice an easy ASOT type of set. I pretty much guessed at most of the tracks that i thought he would play and some of them he even mixed the same way as in previous sets. I'd go see someone like Rank 1, or Markus Schulz, or Above and Beyond over Armin any day

Of course i still LOVE Armin..don't get me wrong here ppl, his productions are fantastic! But I love the element of surprise that not so mainstream DJ's bring to the scene

Posted by Ek0nomik on Dec-20-2005 08:15:

I don't see the big deal with this. Imagine I was going to see Billy Joel and for some reason he has some mediocre pre pianist and singer. I wouldn't want that man to sing songs that Billy Joel is going to perform later. Don't blow it out of proportion. You can't hate just because you may not like the artists productions.

i'm the opposite... armin killed it last time i saw him :P it was surprising now i think about it because the majority of his stuff wasn't released on armada or sub labels.... not into his production atm though...

it's more everyone's surprised by this... all anyone's asking for is some common sense...
