me neither. Sasha has done some outstanding mix CDs such as GU009 and GU13 and the Northern Exposure stuff with Digweed but I still can't see where the gloria comes from. Especially considoring that his best productions aren't even produced by himself. It just carries his name. Indeed the EDM scene owes him alot but personally I think there are people out there that done more than him but are not even halfly as praised as him.

But I bet people are easily fooled. A quick look at that TA DJ Top 100 poll clearly showed that. People mix up DJs with producers and vice versa. And in many cases they have very little knowledge of who actually made the tune. Just because Tiesto drops the latest Mark Norman tune doesn't mean he produced it. Alot seem to think so.

Carl Cox back in 90-93/4 was great with the oldskool sound, sasha played stuff even then that i didn't enjoy at all, and he's s een by so many as some sort of god or cool person to be into, like life doesn't begin unless you're into him, but I just don't see the fascination at all

Thats all fine with me man, and I agree he does get a bit more credit than he deserves, but alot of people really connect with his music and enjoy the sets he plays, I mean, you cant really say hes a bad DJ.

I'm not gonna sit here and try to convince people to like Sasha, I could give a fuck less if anyone likes him...but I do and I happen to have very similar taste in music as him, so thats that.

And I seriously have similar taste. Its happened quite often where I'll find a track I like, long before I ever hear Sasha play it, and I may use it in a set, and then a few months later I find out he was playing the exact same thing.

Maybe its just because of where I look for music, but all the same...

Anyways, this is my 2 cents.

I respect that mate. My main point goes back to Az's original one, if he's just mixing in abelton before a gig or whatever, that imo is a bit lazy, regardless of who he is. If I were paying to go see a guy i wouldn't expect half of it to be done beforehand, it's the beauty of seeing him 'live'

Yeah I'd be really dissapointed if this is the case. And like I said before, having used ableton alot lately, I'm not impressed so much by what he does with the program, but his mixes are still often very clean and very well executed. And IMO his track selection and programming have been and still are excellent. This can be either very hard or very easy in Ableton, because Ableton is like that, if you want to make it easy you can, but if you want to make it difficult you can aswell.

At least when I saw him last, he was mixing live, in real time. Its very easy to tell if you're playing something pre-recorded, at least for me.

So yeah, Sasha is a lazy fuck, but then, so are most of us. But when he gets into it, the results can be quite nice.

Oh man, a Sasha backlash. It was bound to happen sooner or later.

I can't vouch for his ability with Ableton, but I do find most of what he plays these days incredibly dull, no matter how seamlessly it flows. Thankfully Charlie May et al still have a knack for nice production to the Sasha name.

Out of curiosity, (given your taste in music ) what mixes have you heard that you find dull?

hahaha...and those of us they called bandwagoners when he first hit this craze, that always liked sasha's music like myself, will still enjoy his music

Pretty much everything in 2005, except that shady American Airlines Arena mix which I rather liked. Let me see:

Sasha live in Istanbul, Turkey (04.30.2005)
Sasha Essential Mix from BBC Maida Vale Studio (05.22.2005)
Sasha @ Aria, Montreal (06.11.2005)
Sasha live @ Play.FM (09.03.2005)
Sasha - Fundacion

I mean, I've really tried to give it a chance. Some of the tracks are okay, but generally I don't like the style. It's much too housey for me, and I'm not that fond of the electro spin. One of the hallmarks of Sasha has always been his knack for brilliant progression, but for the last year or two his sets have sounded almost aimless to me.

It took a while for Sasha to finally drop in my rankings, but damn if he seems to be trying.

new sasha > old sasha

Sorry I should have been more specific in my original question. I know Sasha uses Ableton now- I have been in the booth with him and watched him play with the thing.

What I would like to know is what kind of tracks sasha has been playing these past couple of months. It has been a few months since he was in NYC.

Just go. What are you going to do, see Armin the same night.

I like Armin sometimes, but there wasn't much of a decision to be made here.

fuck u ableton haters

When I saw Sasha at his last fundacion gig in LA, he spent most of the night crouched behind the DJ booth, with his laptop screen pointed down towards the floor, while only his hand and occasionally his head popped up while working his controller.

It was interesting to see a DJ practically completely remove themself from view, seeing how much it is getting to be more about the DJ than the music these days.

I like the fact the DJ isnt a spectacle to watch.

It was nice to just dance and take in the sounds without having a DJ to watch...and having no clue what the hell they were doing.

The DJ is always secondary to the music...

Sasha is coming to club glow on 2/4.. I went there for the first time last weekend and liked it, so I'm going to try hard to go see Sasha!

Dull??? To each his own i guess.

I thought the Essential Mix was remarkable.

Posted by medinaM5 on Jan-12-2006 01:32:

i didnt think much of the essential mix at first, but it grew on me...one of the top sets of 2005 imo

Why, the sound there sucks? My ears hurt so much more when I saw Armin on 10/01/05 than when I see DJs in New York. I also thought the crowd had a bit to be desired and the DJ booth isn't in a place for crowd interaction. It's set into the wall on a 2nd floor.

Thats Sasha's kind of booth.

Is there a wall he can lean on if he gets a lil' too fucked up? lol
