It's a tricky situation. A deffinate tough question and matter in debate. Bottom line is that they got there somehow weather it be ( lack of money, kicked out , laziness , etc. ) We'll never really know personally what happened to each and everyone. Some of us may have an idea but it'll never be for sure. So asking yourself, " Should they really be out there begging or are they able to get themselves a job " Is kinda out of the question. I think the younger ones could most likely dig themselves out of thier hole and change thier life around, while older homeless people may not have the oppertunity. But with saying that I do think that there are always options but they choose to overlook them for some reason.

Why , thank you!

I've got strong opinions sometimes. This just happens to be one of those time, lol.

Posted by m2j on Sep-07-2006 13:22:

Yup, I probably would too.

I'm usually hesitant to give homeless people cash because you never know how they're going to spend it. But when they ask for food or a drink and being honest I don't mind helping them out.

Posted by DiskoBiskit on Sep-07-2006 17:05:

hmmm - depends kidda.. sometimes I have my generous days, othertimes I dont bother. I have bought a ladybum a coffee on Queens Quay outside coffee time.. she looked like shit and it was FREEZING..

Generally - I wouldnt. I usually offer and do not like being asked stuff.

Least he wasnt asking for crack

He never asked me for cash, he just needed directions, but i grabbed his hand, went to the bus stop, gave him 2.50 and wished him a good luck.

I will always help someone who is honest, sincere and respectful

Yes, i would have too. I was in the same type of situation as you, Sasha. I had bought a day pass for the TTC and had just arrived at my station where a young kid was asking people for a ticket to go home. He seemed scared and i could also tell he had no money on him whatsoever. Since I was where i needed to be already and it was only 4PM i gave him my day pass to use.

My thing is basically if they don't ask me for money, then i'm willing to give them food/coffee/whatever. Plus i could totally use the good karma!

IMO homeless people and people on welfare are quite similar. They want money and do nothing to get it. As long they keep getting the money, they wont stop doing what they are doing.

personally, people on welfare should not be allowed to buy smokes, booze with their money. If ur that poor, u shouldnt be smokin/drinkin

I think the guvernment should create shops and make em do labor work, at minimum salary and provide them with low income housing....at least we get something out of the deal for our tax money. It aint friggen hard to do manual labor.....

For example, my aunt has an orchard....and because people are lazy, she has to get dudes from jamaica to do the harvest. And those guys are paid more than min wage....so f**** lazy people. there are jobs out there.

I dont ditch out money to bums, and prolly never will. Food maybe...

After reading some article about bums in TO, where less than 50% of them would refuse food or make sick excuses so they can get money...those guys deserve to get pissed on and freeze 2 death in the winter.....sorry for being so harsh!

Posted by DiskoBiskit on Sep-07-2006 19:24:

fair enough! The ladybum I bought coffee for somehow managed to wear shitloads of mascara and pink lipstick every day... funny that.

You should try living in the UK (hence why I came to Canada) people on council estates are smoking / drinking / have cars and their kids are wearing $250 Nikes.. does my fucking head in when I was struggling with a mortgage / student debt and wearing $60 runners that were on sale. And no I was not out clubbing back then..

the harsh reality is that people give bums money to make themselves feel better sometimes... not all people. I know the girl who posted this originally and she wouldnt hurt a fly.. (has her own mini-zoo at home)
I await the onslaught from bum-friendly people.. lol

how is this different from canada? or in fact, any place in the world.

If I give them money to buy drugs with, who's gonna buy mine?

i dunno - been here 7 months. not experienced that side of Canada yet.. it is just VERY in your face in the UK.. tiny country, 60 million people.. all crammed in. You should go there.. the UK will set you up with a house, benefits, allow you to bring whole family! lol...

So I'm walking down the street today when a homeless guy asks me for change. I say, "Sorry dude." He then tells me to get a haircut. LOL! I usually would have retaliated, but I thought I'd just let him let the irony of the situation sink in on his own. Who's the one begging on the street buddy? Lol!

Like I'm going to be taking fashion tips from a bum...

Look at it from another perspective: when EVEN bums start telling you to get haircuts, then maybe it's time to reconsider the shaggy dog look.

You're in the same boat as Diggers and Hernan, Graham.

GET A FREAKING HAIRCUT

Sorry guys. Although I take your opinions very seriously, the ladies tell me to keep it, so I must oblige.

i walked by a bum once who asked me for change, and politely said "sorry". He then procedes to say: "don't say sorry you fuck, say NO. you piece of shit."

i was like, well if that's your attitude, then forget it..

I think a lot of you are unaware of the mental health issues of more than half of the people suffering from homelessness. A lot of these people are schizophrenic, have dimensia or some other mental illness that hinders their chance to get a job.

I agree that there are a lot of people who abuse the system, and they should try and work a little harder to crack down on this, (and to fix the shoddy system we have in the first place,) but I don't think they should be treated like slaves either. These people usually come from a bad life, and have many problems. If anything, we should be trying to focus more money on trying to rehabilitate these people and really help them out.

He asked about 4 people who all ignored him and turned their backs until I turned around and said 'I'll buy you one'.

I got 2 medium regulars and passed him one. He thanked me and I continued to my office.

Would you have bought him a coffee?

No.
