Not necessarily. Bunny's cat has a scratching post that he doesn't use, we've even put cat nip next to it and inside it to he gets used to clawing at it. As soon as the catnip was gone he went back to the couch. Spray bottles, yelling, throwing pillows...that cat doesn't care he still scratches. The only thing that we've found to work are these sticky pads you stick on couch. They're clear, adhesive, nylon pads that stick to the couch. They're double sided so if the cat tries to claw his paws will stick, I guess they don't like it. Only problem is they attract cat hair like mad so you'll have these sticky hairy things on the side of your couch You can just replace them, but they look kinda nasty after a while.

well yea i'm sure every cat is different, but the point is that hers is still a kitty and she should wait a little longer.

Bunny has had her cats since they were kittens and they've never liked their scratching post.

christ, those rolleyes really drive that point home.

i don't think i've ever seen a cat that likes their scratching post. i swear, they're all so bratty it's like they KNOW they should be scratching the post, but boy oh boy... it's just sooo much more fun to scratch the couch, or the speakers, or mommys head while she's sleeping!

i've done some research and read some reviews of SoftPaws (the rubber things to cover the claws) and it seems like most cats will rip them off with their teeth or they won't even stay on to begin with.

believe me guys, it's hard for me to make the "right" choice here because i see how much he loves using his claws to climb on my furniture and on me, but i just feel like it'll be a lot easier for me to play/cuddle with him if he doesn't have claws... and we both love playing and cuddling.

In my experience, the declawing process only removes the front claws, so he will still have the back ones. Cats learn to attack you by leaping at you with back paws forward and sinking in with their teeth instead of their front claws. They're fucking devilishly adaptive creatures. <3

edit: And cats learn to cope just perfectly fine without their claws, honestly. They can still climb and play and bounce around just as much as before, they just have to have a time to adjust to it is all. And it's not like your cat really has to defend itself using claws anyways - running is a cat's best defense against things trying to attack it. But I am not sure why you would need to worry about that.

hey guess who's NOT getting a phone call this weekend?

Posted by Danny Ocean on Oct-27-2006 20:28:

yeah the can still climb and jump and play withut their front claws..and you can play with them without getting pwnd. It's bullshit that they lose their balance and character.
DO it via laser surgery.

Cats have claws, deal with it, either you learn to live with the claws or you don't have cats, declawing is cruel and inhumane.

While that may be true for older cats, as a kitten it isn't very hard on the animal to be declawed because it still has a lot of growing and learning to do and it will best adjust to the loss of their front claws. Waiting and deciding later after the furniture is fucked is also much harder on the cat. We declawed our cat when it was a kitten and now at the age of 15 you cant possibly tell me my cat isnt one the friendliest and happiest cats you'll ever meet.

So, you could adapt to life without your fingernails, but would you want to?

Umm, how would not having fingernails affect the way I do most tasks? Maybe picking my nose or scratching myself, but when I go through and think about the things I do everyday, I can easily tell you that not having fingernails would affect, at best, 2% of my daily life.

thats hardly an excuse because you didnt take into effect that unlike a cat, I cant use my toenails to make up for my lost fingernails like a cat can.

well it doesnt matter as myra has already decided to declaw.

i know there are happy declawed cats out there, but if you judge it against human surgery, most people dont get surgery for the hell of it. its expensive and/or can hurt or kill you. getting surgery done when theyre small is best, but they also grow out of their kid habits as they grow so its a double edged sword.

but all i have to say is, sorry myra - i didnt mean to make you feel bad, its your decision. i just feel a different way on the issue than you. sasha looks cute and i have to remove oscar from my cell phone charger now|

what about people who get breast implants? nose jobs? liposuction? those are all procedures that are done for cosmetic reasons rather than health reasons...

it's all good, biz. i certainly understand where you're coming from, and it's definitely one of those issues that people are going to have differing opinions about. all i ask is that people respect my opinion and i'll respect theirs!

tell Oscar that Sasha says hi and that he wishes they could play with the cell phone charger together.

Posted by jahnlay on Oct-31-2006 12:26:

Yea, and those cosmetic surgeries are done by choice, no-one forced anyone to have cosmetic surgery. You can justify the declawing all you want but I think it's wrong.

Given the dramatic societal differences between users here on TA (and the general lack of respect for them), this is probably one of the single worst places I can imagine to have a debate over declawing.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Oct-31-2006 16:03:

People don't seem to understand that respecting someone's opinions is not the same as agreeing with them. Morons.

i agree.

clearly, the best way to have this debate is at 4 in the morning over the phone with me while i'm drunk and coked up.

Indeed, that is the ONLY acceptable place for this debate.
