Sorry, this doesn't apply to this situation. It's not as simple as that. We're talking more about the reason why posts the things they do about parties in general. This applies to every event thread, every review thread, and every roll call.

I don't think that's true at all. Maybe most of the TOTAs who use this board frequently know who is affiliated with who, but when taking into account all of TOTA's user base, I think that it is safe to say that most TOTAs don't know who is affiliated with who. That is why people post in this biased fashion. If this keeps up, TOTA is going to loose it's legitimacy as a place to find out about good parties in Toronto. It's going to start being seen as a big advertisement.

This is a message board, not a website for party reviews. Message boards are a place where people of common interest communicate and socialize. Who made you the person who decides what should go in a party review thread and what doesn't? Who's to say that a review of a party shouldn't involve a more personal aspect?

Besides Sarah, most of the party review threads that this happens in are parties you wouldn't even go to anyway, regardless of what is said in the review thread (ie Guv all access parties)!

Great idea!

Posted by Jayx1 on Nov-16-2006 19:00:

so why cant you read EVERYTHING with a grain of salt? TV is one big advertisement disguised as entertainment. Why cant we treat the message board in the same suspect?

Why must everyone be babied because they cant think for themselves? yes its true that there are some shananigans that go on but people should be smart enough to realize that and think accordingly. Places a million restrictions will just drive away a lot of people who are afraid to post in the wrong spot in fear of being ostrasized by the unofficial thread police that already seem to gleefully do their job.

Im pointing to all of u who have ever used "inb4dalock" with that comment.....

seriously... everyone needs to lighten up, get some commone sense, and ignore those who they think are on the board to do nothing but promote something. If people didnt respond to their posts, theyd leave pretty quickly.

And god forbid that somehow through this awful "advertising" you actually end up at a good party, hearing a good mix or buying a great album.. Oh the horror!

Im willing to bet youve already been a victim of that and not even known it

This is very true; as I have been on TA for a number of years now, and I still do not know the relationships.

Some of them are completly obvious, but most are not.

I used to believe that those were strict rules on this board but I realized that many times the lines are blurred so much between promoter/talent/patron that it's impossible to tell. Now a days, I don't think that people should be restricted from posting a roll call but they should definitely be restricted from bumping it like mad.

I would say, let anyone post a roll call but if there is no interest, no point in bumping it 50 million times.

just like i dont bump my aws threads...

*cough cough*

Posted by DigDeep on Nov-16-2006 19:17:

To many if's but's and maybe's going on in here.

Simple.

The fuck with roll calls. No need if every just uses the event forum. Eliminates said 'bumping' problem. If someone is interested in updating the names in that thread, they can easily keep it updated by posting the current list once a day.

Photo threads. Post it in the review threads. Period. Or guess whats bound to happen? Every photographer in the city is going to find out about TA's loose rules when it comes to party photos, and people will simply register to show off their work.

i would vote against getting rid of roll calls.

I vote that this thread not become 10 pages long

Posted by fairy godfather on Nov-16-2006 20:29:

This thread started as a plea to curtail, if not end "shameless self promotion"...

I am sorry people, but I can't help but think that it's really down to a few personalities who, quite frankly, have been bickering back and forth for months now...

I think this is an amazing family of like-minded music and dance lovers, who share their lives, their feelings, their thoughts, their wishes....and on a rare occasion, their anger or frustration! Just look at the pics from Sonic on Saturday and you can see it...what made that party so amazing...or the one a week ago at This Is London for Sander...it was the people we spent the night with...lets not loose sight of that...

Lots of great ideas to improve the board have developed through this thread...and I know they will all receive due consideration in the constant struggle to make things better.

Let's focus on the things that unite our community, not the very few irritants that divide us....

Posted by Cribby on Nov-16-2006 20:32:

So much bitching in this thread....with all these proposals for rules we're making this place seem less like a message board...If I want to post about how much fun I had dancing with someone, I will.

Posted by rabbitjoker on Nov-16-2006 20:59:

The "Roll Call" thread...

I love roll calls and I think they should stay. I find them to be a valuable part of TOTA since it shows me who of my friends are attending an event. It also helps me gauge the popularity of the event (more people = more popular). Also it often notifies me of an event I might have not thought off attending.

I still don't think that roll calls should be started by promoters or talent. The purpose of the roll call is not to advertise and promoters and talent starting roll calls is simply just another effort to promote/advertise the event (promoters and talent already have a place for that - the event forum). Plus, we already know that the talent and promoter are going to be at the event - so they really don't need to start another thread to announce it.

That is my $0.03. So yeah - I agree: Roll Calls should continue to be created and used (but not by talent/promoters).

ya right, lets make another TRIBE out of tranceaddict.
some good points on both sides... but I personally see nothing wrong with the mentioned threads. Dont fix it if it's not broken.

stop crying, lets go partyyyy!

Graham, if the thread is called "event review" ....

And while I don't go to most of the parties on here, I do enjoy reading the reviews (up to page 4 when I max out on "omghi2u"s)

thats what i immediately thought when reference was made to creating new sub forums for thinking like reviews and recalls or whatever.

its one of the things i dont like about tribe. i personally love TA the way it is now (my opinion)

I haven't read the entire thread but from what I've seen so far, Margaret's post makes the most sense. As long as people do it in a manner that's cool like I said and it doesn't become nonsensical then I have no prob with it. House party threads in terms of just random ones that are just filled with nonstop bumping and talking wouldn't be cool overall but I don't read them. I'd say the ones that are exempt from this however are ones like the end of summer ones or huge ass TA get togethers where it's not just a one off thing but happens yearly. Those ones I don't have a huge deal with.
