Edit: I read now the entire thread. The map of Lebezniatnikov is very nice and the route is not the worst. I wouldn't agree with Stockholm, Oslo and Reykjavik though - try to visit Dublin, London and Amsterdam instead! Paris is also worth a journey but only if you intend to visit a lot of museums. I've been in Paris several times and you need a lot of time to see at least a part of the museums. The Louvre alone will take weeks (no joke!) Apart from the museums I do not like Paris - the city is almost as boring as Munich.

The following route is very interesting all over the year (but especially in spring, summer and fall):
1.) Dublin-London-Amsterdam-Hamburg-Kopenhagen, then followed by
2.) Kopenhagen-Berlin-Dresden-Prague-Budapest, then
3.) Budapest-Vienna-Venice-Swiss Alps-Milano-Florence-Rome.
That all is possible by train (and sometimes ferry). I split the whole tour into three parts due to the different directions in Europe. Part 1 is the coastal part, part 2 the central European one, part 3 is around the alps and Italy.

There is a second route (the mediterranean one with Southern Europe and Northern Africa) I would recommend it for winter (but never ever during the summer because it is too hot then). For these cities you need to fly:
1.) Kairo-Jerusalem/Tel Aviv-Istanbul, then
2.) Istanbul-Athens-Rome-Ibiza-Barcelona, then
2.) Barcelona-Grenada-Lissabon. And then back across the Atlantic ocean....

The route 1. can easily be done with not so much money, for route 2. you will need a bit more money (and I would not recommend to do it in summer - it is too hot with temperatures being often higher than 40�C (or 105�F)!).

i just came back from europe about a week ago...

i must say paris and berlin are the bombs.com

so i guess what i am saying is germany and france. Germany has so much goodness, starting off with berlin. its so cool it was prob my fav city in europe i visted. then u got munich which is cool as well and well, in frankfurt i really didnt do much exept land, take off and go to cocoon which is kinda sick.

france is also nice. there is just somehting about being in france, and having a bottle of wine @ a cafe which is kinda cool. the lurve, notre dam or however u spell it... the city itself is sick and u got lots of stuff u can visit

amsterdam was a bit (n) for me... but they do have lots of cool stuff there. belgium is also nice... bruxells is a nice city etc...

maybe i was in search of something more rich in history or something and was bedazzled by berlin...

i mean i like alot of museums... im a member of the high museum here in atlanta, and there were 2 very goodones in amsterdam

I went to Europe for the first time last June/July with a mate of mine. Of all places, I went to Amsterdam first, and that was quite a shocker for me. Inexperienced as I was, and majorly fatigued with jet lag, it was a test of my sanity and soul. I should've picked a more low-key environment to start off with--like Svalbard... heh.

...or Dublin as recommended by me to avoid too early "shocking" experiences

If I go to Europe for a month sometime, this is the route I want to follow. It's a lot, and it misses some of the more iconic stops in Europe (London, Paris, Amsterdam, etc.), but I want to see a less touristy Europe anyway.

I lived in Germany for a year and did several backpacking trips before that time. I really like Europe and the main parts of europe are awesome and a must see (london, paris etc.). I also really loved manchester, but that is because i am a new order addict....

I preferred the south of france over paris. I liked capri better than rome. but i also felt if i hadnt gone to rome then i would have missed something...

but out of all of europe i love love love eastern europe (main eastern europe now). krakow is great and i heard warsaw had a great scene, but i didnt see it when i was there. all i could see was what was left of communism...budapest was great, prague was great, and i went outside of prague to a city called terezin and missed our bus out of there and got stuck in this city with no one able to speak english... it was scary but thank god my friend and i could speak german and we were able to communicate with someone.

if you are going in june, check out a scandanavian country. i went to finland during summer solstice and we went up to the artic cirle. it was cool b/c the sun never went down and there were tons of parties (more in helsinki).

it is up to you what you want to see. fit in a few big cities, and make it a point to see some stuff outside of the big cities. you expressed an interest in milan and to be honest i did not like milan at all. too many mosquitos....amsterdam and berlin, IMO, are must sees.

if you are a student (i think you are) take advantage of student discounts and get a student card from STA. lots of discounts to museums. also if you are under 26 you can get discounts.

for the flight over there i would take a flight to london, that is your cheapest option.

also to save money, eat cheap by going to supermarkets instead of eating out all the time. you can get great local stuff in the supermarkets (cheeses, yum) and have a nice picnic. going to foreign supermarkets is fun as well!

are you interested in staying in hostels? i have a good website with hostels, but i cant find it. if i search i may be able to find it for you. some hostels can be really nice and for a little extra you may be able to get your own room, instead of sleeping with 10 strange people.
