What, I don't even need to say anything anymore to get these cheap attacks? What a sad, sad individual you are.

Well, that's news to me

To understand both views:

a - remove all your experiences within the scene from the last 10 yrs, sit yourself down a year or so ago and download, in one sitting, as much trance from the last 10-15 yrs as you possibly can. Now, listen to it all and make your decisions based purely on this mass you have engrossed yourself in. For an Angel, in this context, could easily not stand out.

b - remember that there is much more to dance music than sitting at the PC! Have a look at the For An Angel video with Love Parade - wonderfully suiting to the mood! This is context friends - place yourself in each others shoes

LOL. love it.

For An Angel is still a classic track for me.

Overrated production, nothing special at all. I liked it for a short period of time and even bought the CD single, but I haven't listened to it in years and have no desire to listen to it again. I can think of literally hundreds of mid 90's tracks which are far superior to it including some of PvD's own productions.

And I certainly don't claim to be one.

When I talk about For An Angel I refer to the E-Werk mix. The 45RPM original isn't anything remarkable, especially not in 1994.

I should also note, while my name is being tossed around as resident For An Angel fan, that I draw a distinction between favorite and best. The first is informed by personal preference, whereas the latter refers to a broader opinion shared by experienced listeners. Under those definitions, For An Angel (E-Werk Mix) isn't remotely the "best" of trance in 1998, much less best in any wider sense. But it's a good track, and remains special to me.

Erm... nine years. From 2007. Equals 1998. Y'know... the time when For An Angel was updated and became hugely popular. He's not talking about the 45RPM version at all. No wonder your arguments seemed to be full of holes- you've got completely the wrong time period.

Yeah, looks like we're on about different things entirely. Not that the reworked mix is any good either.

I wonder how many more pages this could have gone on.

Oh, and about the other branch of the discussion:

Why hasn't trance "moved on"? I blame lack of creativity and the experimental box-up of software production.

As to why veteran producers have fallen prey to pathetic standards, if they haven't moved to other styles, I don't have an answer.

partly that. although i'd say mainly because of the old "if it aint broke, don't fix it" argument

software production only really crossed into the mainstream in around 2002 or thereabouts, and trance hadn't exactly moved on that much for several years prior

Posted by Spartan on Jan-30-2007 21:38:

For goodness sakes there is new trance everywhere. At this moment I am listening to Holdens balance 005 and loving it. I know its not the newest album (now 3 years old i think) but its def. post 99-02 epic stuff thats creative and different sounding. Reading these forums you'd think trance was going extinct.

Are you fucking kidding me? I know from experience that you're one of the most stereotypical trancekiddies on this forum.

Remember back in the old days, when we used to have long-winded arguments, and you claimed anthem trance was sooo awesome?

examples?

nothing that i've heard in the past year has come close to the emotion and impact that For An Angel (and other tracks during that era) had on me. It's a joke (but also a sign of the times) to see BT's track being voted TA's track of the year for '06.

I have not read through the whole thread, but as far as the "superior equipment" goes, today's equipment is not superior in any means.. Today's equipment is mostly emulations of the old synths, most which isn't up to the standard of the hardware version, so why do we have superior equipment ?

Because we can all use emulators for free, without investment or experience, in one simple software package! Just fire up Reason and upload to the digi-label!

The traditional filters for quality have broken down.
