I just put that up there to show just straight out speed performance it's not that big of a difference. And what you posted could as easily happen to someone riding a 250 or a 600. If you pass the M-Class then obviously you payed attention to something and your not some clueless squid with just a permit.

You might have been on a good start with a sportbike, but to recommend a 140lb new rider with no real knowledge of bikes is a mistake. There is always next year for the fast bikes...he will make his cash back on an SV once he grows out of it or is ready for more bike.

Its only a 1/4 mile...keep running and the SV is in the dust. Yes if he takes an MSF course he will be told common things to avoid...Im just getting the impression that he wants it for status...and those end up squids in the hospital. Please tell me you can see that in his posts.

Honestly he's gonna lose money when he sells it. Probably won't be that easy of a sale too unless he puts it at a good price. Most bikes that are sold and sell are sportbikes, i mean sure SV's sell too but you'll have a harder time.

only people who have ridden plz respond, jesus.

Get whatever bike is your dream bike, or whatever CC you want and treat it with respect. wear gear, go nuts slowly, and enjoy. Beware of other drivers.

Thats it. Just be respectful. Also, you arent a motoGP rider.

Talk to Jonsun about it. I know he had his skin ripped off of him after falling off of one.

I did start seeing squidliness after a few pages. But honestly if he wants it he's gonna get it, so i'm just trying to let him know to respect the power. And as for the speed difference your not gonna have that many times where you can find a nice 1/4 mile of road or more to see how much faster a 600 is than a SV. (Unless you live on the highway or something.)

Maybe in your area...there are always new riders, and an SV is almost always recommended. If you pick up one at 3500 you can put a thousand miles on it over that summer and still sell it at the same price in the winter. I see it all the time. They are training wheels.

Well he wasn't wearing his gear obviously, and that's not the bike's fault it's his.

You can be right about that. If your from California like i think you are then i won't be as skeptical. As for Chicago it's not that easy.

I know too many that had that train of thought....didnt work out too well. Some acted like squids....some just didnt know what they were getting into. Some died, some got luck and just broke both arms etc. Gotta crawl before you walk.

Posted by wizniz on Feb-15-2007 16:24:

honestly i dont think im "squidly" (as in need a panty dropper and to go fast fast fast)... im just ignorant =/

really, i just want a cheap vehicle that gives me good gas economy... and i thought id turn it into an experience by getting a bike.

That why I said respect it. Thats like saying someone who hops in a 2.5 million dollar car is going to go nuts and crash it instantly. The reason they dont is respect. Its 2.5 million dollars and they understand the power that brings. People lose sight of that when its a 10,000 dollar "crotch rocket".

This is trickled down, MotoGP technology. Its a race bike. Treat it as such and realize YOU arent a good rider. Respect the bike and dont respect yourself then haha

it's the only powersports vehicle i have any interest in owning... but i don't really have much use for one at the moment.

i'd actually love to own a pink Vespa, but theyre sooo freakin' expensive. Honda Metropolitans and Yamaha Vinos are pretty sweet too though, and way cheaper.

Posted by idoru on Feb-15-2007 22:33:

I used to think mopeds were the most badass things evar back in the day. It'd be cool to have one.

Posted by lcid on Feb-15-2007 22:39:

and even though i hate motorcycles, i'd buy this one just so i could stare at it and drool...

whoever thinks a rookie can get on a big bike and stay alive, so long as they treat it with respect, is giving you very dangerous advice.

Why are young drivers overrepresented in fatality stats? they know the risks just like everyone else.
A bike is very responsive, can be unforgiving and is far more succeptable to the variables on the road. What does a car driver know about how slippery road markings are in the rain? About blind drivers who don't look out for bikers? Hit a pot hole in the car and you moan about your taxes never fixing anything. Hit that thing on a bike you could never walk again

New riders have enough to worry about without having all that power a small twist of the wrist away. Common sense says be careful, but it you've never experienced things going wrong, common sense doesn't hold the same power.

stay away from 600 sports bikes for a first bike, they are very powerful (check against power of a 10 year old 1100 to see how much power has increased). If nothing else consider the cost of repairing the plastic if you drop it. or the cost of insurance.
We had size restrictions in oz when I started, so I got an RGV250. Great fun, best handling bike on the road, but 2-stroke with very peaky power. Now they've gone far more sensible in this state at least, you can get larger bikes (650 i think) with a limit on power to weight. If I was starting now, something like a GS500 would be my recommendation.
