yeh I think he's talking about the tracklist that the judges come up with for us to use, whatever they find must be purchaseable off beatport or whatever. either way that looks lie a fairly solid foundation for judging, Im happy with it, unless anyone has further suggestions??

Sorry, very long stressful day yesterday!

Had a thought last night, if The List has 10 tracks & our mixes will be say 5 tracks long then it's possible that some mixes will use 5 different tracks to everyone else which goes against what we're trying to do. Would it be better to reduce The List to 8 tracks? That way we'll be forced to use at least some of the same tracks. Maybe even go one step further & just choose 5 tracks for The List?

Just a thought, feel free to shoot me down

I think 10 tracks is ok.There is little chance that two of us will mix 5 different tracks and with 10 tracks we can see how each one of us pics the tracks in order to make the best mix.
5 tracks is not a bad idea but i think the judges will be bored after listening the same tracks.

Keep in mind that pending on what genre gets picked, the length of the tunes will be different so there might be more than 10 from The List.

We want to have some creativity, not too much.

(Will the 3rd judge please stand up?)

We need someone to start naming tracks.

perhaps we should first determine the BPM range in which these mixes would be made. I think 135ish would be perfect

No offense, but if you've never even mixed before, I have a hard time believing you'd be able to do a good enough job judging the work of other people who've been at this for a while.

As for tracks, just cool down for the moment.

We need a genre first. Tomorrow, we'll cut off the "votes" for genres, and source (TA vs. non), and THEN we can start naming tracks. The whole point of this is to figure those two things out. Everything else comes later.

Posted by Beatflux on Mar-23-2007 22:07:

I will judge.

I vote:

Trance

Non-TA tracks

I think Ableton is definately fair game; however, equipment used should be considered to judge creativity.

So for example if someone pulls some crazy moves on a crappy 2 channel mixer compared to a guy who whips out the standard preset for beat repeat, we should award more points to the more basic user.

Considerations:

Tables, Laptop, or Cds?
Mixer?

40% Technical Ability -

Are the beats matched?
Phrasing?
Gain levels?
EQ?
Able to keep a prolonged beat matched up properly?
Are the rhythmic effects on beat?

40% Creativity -

FX?
Cutting?
Scratching?
Tricks?
Sampling?
Mash ups?

20% Set Structure, Energy, and Overall Impression -

Did the DJ cut out too early of a song?
Too late?
Did the DJ peak too early?
Overall Impression?

Overall Score out of 100

Ok. There seems to be people with different ideas about what this contest is suppose to be about.

My view is that there is 3 judges deciding on genre and tracks (10 or so) and contestants make a 30 min mix using the tracks listed by the judges. (going for max creativity from the contestants given to work with controlled input)

Other seems to think that the contestants should have input on what genre and tracks to pick.

So, which one is it going to be?

As for judging criteria, I don't care how the judges come up with a score as long as they can explain their criteria for marking and all judges use the same criteria

Yay for Beatflux for volunteering.

As for Import's qualification as a judge, in a way, his inexperience as a DJ may give more... interesting insight to what he sees in a mix as DJs know what to look for and what they consider good, but someone just listens to a lot of sets may have a different, and perhaps refreshing outlook on a set. (Plus it doesn't take much to note a trainwreck or a serious mistake)

Posted by lawrenceq on Mar-23-2007 23:24:

I like what you guys are coming up with, lets set down a genre or couple of genres to mix around with for the first set. Or at least lets hear from those who want to judge this, what genres do you guys want to hear? How many tracks do you fancy hearing in a 30 minute mix? I think the comment about how one dj's (using ableton, or a two channel mixer etc) is VERY important because it delievers obvious handicaps. Anybody else got thoughts?

Posted by Beatflux on Mar-24-2007 00:55:

I'd like to see a limit of 30 minutes for a mix and have a pool of just 10 tracks. That way, everyone participating is on an even ground in terms of material. Not only that, but it will force contestants to be more creative in their mix because they won't be able to heavily rely on track selection.

I think trance would be a good way to start off the first competition and if it works out well, it can be expanded to include other EDM genres .

Posted by lawrenceq on Mar-24-2007 01:08:

i'm cool with that

Posted by Beatflux on Mar-24-2007 01:34:

Idea for tracklist...

For the tracklist - if we took the top ten from beatport it would eliminate the process of picking out tracks plus everyone would be listening to fresh tracks.

Posted by kadomony on Mar-24-2007 01:42:

i might be down for this

Well, after sorting through the posts, more people want trance than anything else. Take that as you will, but that's what it is for this time around. Now start nominating tracks.

Posted by Zild on Mar-24-2007 23:17:

Well I'm not judging a trance mix contest. I know that for sure. If anyone wants to do some sort of house/techno type of thing let me know.

Next time.

I won't be participating, but I'm still willing to sort out the logistical stuff.

indeed. Also leaves it more wide open for people who want more tracks to deal with.

That's a good idea. No mash ups unless they are available to everyone. Same for the remixes.

You could always make your own...

Posted by Yohan on Mar-25-2007 02:25:

Also not interested in doing a trance contest.

I like trance, but not for this sort of contests
