-- Most racist country in the World?
Pages (4): « 1 2 3 [4]
While the trend in movies has changed, and stereotypes have become not so obvious.
Older days, Native Indians holler and do their funny dance.
Now, they live in rural areas pretty poor and have crappy jobs.
The obviously Korean characters own a convenience store for adults in movies and speaks poor English. Exception being Dr. Yang in House? or is it the other doctor sitcom? I'm not even sure if she's identified as a Korean. But I digress.
Korean parents (ie on Gilmore Girls) are conservative and controlling. (Damn you sis for making me watch this BS!)
Indian parents always talk with funny accent. (Mostly true, but you get what I mean) Latinos somehow seems to come across thugs or doing something shady.
What I'm saying is racial stereotypes in media aren't as blatant as before. But since the media wants to relate the characters as close as those found in everyday life, or at least perceived to be so.
Therefore, when someone who lives in Buttfuck, Nowhere, who haven't met someone of other ethnicity other than through TV meets a black person or whoever, their perception is influenced by what they know, and most of it is through TV stereotype.

| Originally posted by DigiNut I can only hope that some of the people who insist that Canada and/or the USA are two of the most racist countries actually have the opportunity some day to try making a life for themselves in virtually any other country where they don't quite fit the local profile. Many of the Scandinavian or other European countries are looked at as exceptionally friendly or tolerant, but virtually everyone I've talked to who lives there has had a story for me about their country's local isolationist party that wants to deport all foreigners and has a very large and loyal following amongst the local population. Not that Europe itself is anywhere near as xenophobic as many parts of Asia or the Middle East. Japan's already started whitewashing their history, I shouldn't even need to mention the whole China/Tibet thing, South Korea and North Korea can't stand each other (or anyone else), and just try flying into Saudi Arabia some day and telling a state official that you don't really understand this whole Wahabbism thing and that they ought to loosen up a bit. I don't see why people are so shocked by this or so anxious to deny it, either. If you scaled human history down to a single day, then people only really became aware of the existence of other cultures by 11:30 PM, and have only been able to actually see and interact with them since 11:50 or so (airplanes and internet would be within the last minute). It takes a long time for disparate groups to integrate themselves and there's often a lot of conflict and resentment which simply can't be skipped any more than the "ice breaking" stage can be skipped in a successful long-term relationship. |

The most racist place I've ever been in is Sri Lanka. The majority sinhalese race and the largest minority, tamils (originally from southern India) just do not get along and absolutely hate each other. Their dislike for each other over 100s of years finally started a civil war in 1983 which still wages on to this day. I for one am glad I left that place as I do not share their views.

| Originally posted by DigiNut No, the only people they treat like shit are the morons who can't go for 30 seconds without shooting their mouths off about how Americans are all racist slack-jawed yokels and that with respect to 9/11 they "had it coming". Not that I'm implying anything here, of course. Do you not know how things work when the roles are reversed, or do you just think it's OK for the Saudis and the Iraqis to decapitate foreign repair crews and journalists and videotape forced conversions at gunpoint, because their particular interpretation of the Sharia permits it? I've been to three middle-eastern countries myself, and prolly not going to go into any more details, for I have enough dead worms in my driveway from last week's rain and purposely lost my can opener. |

Although I think the US can be fairly racist still - I wouldn't say that they're the worst in the world.
Cale says South Africa.
