Originally posted by Omega_Blue you know, people bitch about throwing certain music into genres but honestly, why not? it helps describe the style of music to people that don't know what it's all about. i think it's important to label genres of music, otherwise it's just "music" and people won't know what the hell you're talking about. it's more of an elitist fad to hate on the specific name given to a genre of music than anything.

Originally posted by RJT Actually, every artist you listed makes music that is consistently mistaken for minimal by thoughtless chuds who don't know any better.

Originally posted by RJT Tech-House or techno would certainly be more approriate in most cases, and before you go accusing me of being some musical "snob" or "eltist," maybe you should understand that terms have meaning beyond the "description du jour," and that the entire "minimal" movement in EDM is a horrible misnomer. It's not being elitist, it's being correct.

Originally posted by stevsto tech-house being more appropriate is your opinion, so you are correcting people based on your opinion. in my opinion, tech-house is a better genre to put what is mostly called electro under, but im not going to call people thoughtless chuds for calling it electro, that would make me an elitist know-it-all who just looks for oppurtunities to correct people and make me look smart infront of my internet peers.

basic channel & daniel bell are two artists i can think of that exclusively make minimal techno. you'd find more similiarities between any random progressive house track and "minimal" track than you would between a minimal techno track and a "minimal" track, especially one made by the artists you've mentioned.
the music you're calling minimal is the music that we called prog 2-3 years ago.

For fuck's sake, stop using "minimal" like it is a new genre that popped up when people started bumming Richie Hawtin and his new haircut.
"Minimal" is a prefix, an approach to creating music where you aspire to achieve maximum impact from a minimum of elements. Therefore, any type of music whatsoever can be minimal. "Minimal" is not an all-purpose denominator to be used for lumping in every techno or tech house tune that tries to mimic what Richie Hawtin is putting in his sets and signing to his label these days.
Techno as a genre has been moving towards a more minimal approach in recent years, (as can be seen in the sets of people like Adam Beyer or Marco Carola), but people like Robert Hood and Mike Ink have been pioneering this approach to techno for more than 10 years, way before the cocaine massive started inhabiting techno nights, and way before DJs and producers started to water sets and productions down to a mindnumbingly boring heap of grey matter to accomodate them and their favouring of poseur habits at the bar instead of dancing.
And finally, if you're gonna resort to pompous rhetoric like "true minimal" (techno, obviously), at least name check some releases that actually broke some ground, like this one, this one or this one.
