-- John Digweed - Transitions Vol 3

Already up to the third instalment, John Digweed has returned with his latest Transitions CD. Following the success of the first two volumes, Digweed has once again brought us a high quality mix CD that defines the Transitions he has been doing, and going through.

Quoting the man himself, this new edition is set to move up a gear, featuring 20 carefully selected tracks from producers including Dusty Kid, Umek, Superpitcher and the mysterious COMA, this release also contains a bonus disc with a special 25 minute tune composed by Digweed and partner Nick Muir.

Rumoured to in fact be an alias for the producers of Sasha, Charlie May, Duncan Forbes Barry Jamieson, Coma 1 is a wonderful opening track that revolves around eerie monotonous pads and light percussion it gradually builds to blend perfectly in with Spheere. Using his trademark skill, Digweed effortlessly merges songs like There and the Superpitcher Mix of Along The Wire, to devastating effect. The tracks keep rolling along, predominantly deep with dark overtones whilst slowly adding in some slightly melodic tunes like Daniela Stickroths Chest In The Attic and the new track from Joel Mull.

Paul Ritch and Reshuffles tracks form a nice arc in the middle of this mix, moving out of the darkness slightly these tunes add some nice groove to the mix and compliment the following tunes nicely. The Chaim Mix of Come Into My World adds some nice new flavour to the mix with its chunky percussion, deep swells and quirky noises it blends perfectly with Chaims own Genesis. With more short tracks and long transitions, it becomes difficult to notice when a tunes change, although standing out predominantly are the final few, in particular Giddy Down, Adam Freelands Silverlake Pills and the climax of Ricochet Effect and Save Me.

Another superb collection of Transitions, John Digweed has put together a journey into his musical sound scape, deep, dark whilst consistently harmonious. Featuring some exclusive new tracks from some of the biggest and mysterious names around T3 and the bonus CD featuring the new 25 minute song, is one too look forward too.

4/5

Some really nice tracks, but no way is this 'The Best CD of 2007'

Finally gave the promo copy a few listens. Overall, it's okay. The main flaw IMO, almost every track is only "really" being played for 2 minutes max then its either being mashed or mixed into the next track. Great at first but it really gets annoying after a while, especially since if you're "really" getting into a track.

Also, because of this, some tracks totally sound like they've been raped. "Begun the End Has" gets mixed in at its original 3-4 min mark, climax comes up and then its mixed out quickly. And Ricochet Effect, which was one of my fav tunes on the Bonnaro set sounds totally fu*ked, its like a bunch of white noise for 3 minutes, and the main melody doesn't even kick in and then "Save Me" comes into place.

Would have been better if he stuck with 12-14 tracks and got rid of some of the fillers and let some of the better tracks span for a bit longer. But I guess the concept of the CD is "transitions"..so can't complain. Will have to give it a few more listens.

Vol I is still my fav even though it has some flaws. Vol II was sh*t, 80 min bore-a-thon...and Vol III is okay for now. I would have liked to expect a CD with Vol I's style, vibe and tracks with Vol II's structure, flow and mixing.

Couldnt agree more. Id really loved to hear the full mix of Coma 1 and not just an edit.

Got a promo copy today!

I'm listening to it now...I'll post a review when I'm finished

Edit:

I'm at work so I haven't been able to listen to it, but I've gone up to track 7 and so far it's been awesome. Candidate for best compilation of the year.

I'll post more when I finish it.

Edit 2:

Full review on the next page...

Also got my hands on the promo copy and I can say that it's the first time that I hear such a great mix CD with wo much flow in it (and without vocals!!!)

It's like a long but not slow trip to peacefulness

Correct me if im wrong, but isn't track 5, "Einzelkind - La Fiebre del Loco" ? Beatport and 3BeatDigital say so.

Side note: I cant find the submit button.

hated it the first time, loved it the second. digweed's programming is genius, it just needs to percolate for a bit

I suppose I can try that... listened to it twice actually, it's good and all that, but I get the feeling something's missing with this mix.

Posted by nsamadi on Sep-16-2007 21:42:

All I can say is...there's WAY too much mixing going on this CD....to the point where it just ruins things. Feels like things are being rushed.

BTW, whats up with Digweed and techno right now..it seems to be his current phase at the moment.

Probably right..they also did a mistake with labelling that ReShuffle track.

I half agree with that, but I think it works in alot of places, especially with the way he edited the tunes...

I've just listened to this cd for the first time, I'm quite impressed. A lot of familar tunes form Sasha and Digweed sets.

Way better then volume 2 btw!

WTF I can't wait!

Sunday it's my birthday, I would like to have my copie?

God please, save me!

I was finally able to listen to this masterpiece tonight. Loved it all the way through. Unlike some others have said, I'm not annoyed by the fact that the tracks start to get mixed in/out too fast. I don't look at it as separate tracks, but truly as a whole. And in that it accomplishes what many other compilations only attempt but end up failing, sometimes miserably.

The line it follows is housey at the beginning and then slowly changes into more minimal and techno at the end.

Overall, fucking mint compilation. I'd definitely say pick it up when it comes out. You will not be disappointed.

Really, really good.

I don't feel like giving it a proper review after the first listen, but the programming and trackselection is simply brilliant. It's got everything an outstanding mix needs to have.

Yeah..I have to agree with you..it works in some places...but I don't dig it in others.

I look at it that way as well, but still, the structure still has a weird vibe.

Actually, the mixing style reminds me a bit of Sasha's Fundacion though not as great in the mixing. Vol III has this slam on effect when tracks finally drop while with Fundacion tracks weave in and out. Didn't care for Fundacion too much but there was this one segment where he goes through 8 tracks in a matter of minutes...so nasty, and I'm pretty sure Digweed used Ableton on this.

I thought this was badass. Digweed in full rave mode with this one.

Plan on playing a track or two this Friday

WELL first of all: GENIUS & AWESOME as descriptors

Its about time some of Sasha's buds from the UK start trying his innovative new styles. I hear alot from Carl Cox this summer and hes doing the ping pongy mashin also. Digs is always innovative, but his style is his own. Many times during Bonnaroo i thought i was hearing Sasha when it was Digs, and on the SSL bc of Nature1 Cox's set I kept think Sasha was right next to him helping.

GREAT ABLUM cant wait to by it, us yanks get all the promos first, that way we don't screw the real 'NEW' performers out of an ablum purchase. Cant by em all

I actually like the slam on effect

You're right, it's a bit like Fundacion except I think T3 has a better track selection and is more housey and upbeat.

Picked it up from Best Buy on my work break... 6 tracks in and I'm absolutely LOVING it, I don't think I've loved a Diggers CD this much since MMII or Hong Kong. I kinda liked Transitions #2, and #1 grew pretty old on me but already this shits all over both. Well done, Diggers!

Posted by nsamadi on Sep-26-2007 05:33:

Went today to buy it...according to the stores..don't have it...

They said it should be out by next Tuesday....thinking about grabbing it on Amazon instead.

Posted by TheVrk on Sep-26-2007 11:10:

I've given it one listen and i was DEF impressed
I guess its a matter of taste (maybe) but i dont see how anyone can complain about too much mixing.
I thought Digweed, his masterful self, made an INCREDIBLE mix here.

Programming doesnt get much better than this imo...
Right from the beginning its like he was on a mission to take you somewhere...and DEEP.
Never let go of me all the way through to the end.

Of course, a great job by John Digweed

Full rave mode? You got to be fucking kidding. Way too dull and slow to be played at a rave. I'm disappointed with this. The set has its moments, and I lean towards the housey techno tracks, but for the most part, this does nothing for me. I won't knock his mixing or programming, they're obviously spot on here, but that means nothing for me if I don't like the tracks. Ah well, guess I'm more of a deep house fan than techno.
