Originally posted by Ian but, why? I mean seriously, a tip is (in ithe terms we speak in europe anyway) to signify good service. It's a sign of gratitude. I don't get why you'd tip bad service, not tipping them is enough. However when abroad which is when we eat out most, we tend to check up on places, by the menu, the number of locals in there, which often shows the quality of a place etc.
I have money, I can tip so I do. I don't see a reason not to tip, ever.

The problem is the workers' standard pay isn't anywhere near that good to consider a tip a reward (imagine you are making roughly 5 USD/hour for just 7 hours of service & 6 days a week; how can you live off of that in a major city?). |

Originally posted by Halcyon+On+On I always tip at places I plan on going to again. Even if the service is shitty, if I ever plan on going to that place ever again, I tip somewhere around 20%+ I can think of few restaurant experiences where I felt that the attendant did a bad job - there's usually many variables to consider but as long as I get drinks, food, & bill, I am generally pleased with the service. Was the water/waitress really busy? Were they handling like 7 tables at once because someone decided not to show up tonight? are they totally new at the job? All things to consider. Some of you have this fucked up psycho-conditional streak where you believe that tipping should be something done as incentive, like you're fucking Pavlov ringing a bell. No, tipping is not a required thing, but do you honestly believe that after a waiter/waitress gets their $0.43 tip, they will think to themselves "gee, I should do a better job next time" or will they think to themselves "wow, what a righteous idiot fucking cunthead"? Whatever though - I have always operated under the adage that the true measure of a person's character is how they treat those who are least important to them. Tipping shouldn't be some form of behavioural control.

Originally posted by Ian isn't there a minimum wage over there that has to be strictly enforced? I mean i know tips are important, my brother waited on for years throughout college on min wage for an 18-21 y/o plus tips and it wasn't a lot but he got by.

Originally posted by inconspicuous minimum wage doesn't apply to jobs for which tips are a reasonable consideration. That said, I think it's around 6.50 now or something. It's not supposed to be enough to make a good living on, even as it is now (in principal, it shouldn't even exist, but that's for another time). A reasonable number is figured in for tips. I don't know what they do to figure out what a reasonable expectation is for that, but it's in there.
National minimum wage in the US was brought to $7.25 within the last year, if I recall. Still hardly enough to make a decent living in many areas of the country.
yeah, while it's more here, things cost a lot & it's hard with all taxes & bills to get even for so many people. then u get the bastards profiting from selling credit to people who can't afford it & it gets worse.

I don't care who made it, they still brought it to me.
-for the ones who complain that they don't get paid a lot fo waiting tables...All you're doing is taking my order, serving food and checking up on me, I don't see why you should be paid a lot to begin with. It's the lowest of low paying jobs and it's like that for a reason.

I was working NYE one time, and this old dude tipped me $1 on his first round of drinks, and after that he always had his money in hand and ordered the same drinks. In the huge crowd at the bar he always got my attention first, mainly cus he had his money right there in my face and I was going fast lol
So, yeah even a small tip gets on your server's good side. And this is in NZ where tipping isn't that common.

Originally posted by raveed lol totally.. would be fun to see how waiters react when billionaires or celebrities walk into a restaurant... and besides, atleast 99% of waiters , bartenders etc. are only giving you that smile and checking up on you to get those couple of extra bucks in tips...a lot of them dont have a clue about proper customer service and its pretty easy to see that they are just checking up on you as a mere formality.. but some waiters have been excellent and actually take the time out to have a quick chat and share a joke which is a big plus if the customer isnt busy with something else .. try not tipping them and see if you get served the next time ... if anyone actually deserves a big tip, its the chefs but they actually have something called a skill so they couldnt care less. Restaurant tipping is still acceptable but its the bartending industry i have a problem with. The fact that they expect tips just to open up a beer or toss you a bottle of water is absolutely ridiculous. Even if you order standard drinks which take less than 5 seconds to make, a tip is not deserved. Unless the bartender actually suggests a drink to you or conjures up one of their own specialties, it should not be warranted. The amount of money bartenders can make in a night just on tips is absolutely ridiculous and its all tax free. Whats probably worse is that some of them must be getting so caught up with all that money that they dont think about actually taking up a real job.
I remember our chat about this.

15% or more all of the time unless in extreme cases. Seriously wtf if you don't want to tip then stay at home and cook your own fucking food.
if I ever want extra liquor in a drink I always say I will give a better tip and they always hook it up.
Customer service is about some random person helping you out based on how well you help him out(TIP) In the end of the night or shift they will count their money and be happy or pissed based off how well they performed(good or bad). There is always the next day of work to look foward for more tips so it always works out unless your in those sticky situations like too many tips to split or maybe the busines is slow that night or disgruntled workers. It works out for everyone customer and employee. Common sense goes along way when it comes to tipping.
