6:40.. Home...

Its hard to put into words tonights performance, so ill quote something someone said to me as I was going to get a drink after about an hour of Marco being on decks.

"Blurr, Marco V is kicking.. my ass."

I think what the person who stopped me meant to say is, Marco V is kicking ass.

However you put it..

Marco V... FUCKING... ROCKED.

So did the sound tonight in the mainroom.

He also dropped some Deadmau5.

I agree, Marco kicked ass.

More later... after a daynap.

uh-awe-some-zzzzzzzzzzz

Sux he only played two hours but what a two hours it was!!!!

Go there at 12:15am or so (planned on getting there at 11:45am, but baby duties arose last minute delaying my departure ;p). Koroma on and doing a solid job. Think he was playing Air for Life (again, ANTHEMS = NONONONONONONO), and then played a track that MarcoV had his own remix of (but not too big of an issue). This was all right when I first got there. He changed up the styles right around 12:30am and thought his 40 minutes were PERFECT for a lead-in, without changing up his sit to quickly from where it was when I first got there to lose energy. SOme openers fall in that trap. Know they need to end a certain way and don't set it up for a smooth ending and when they gt to the end of their the sudden shift kills the energy. I don't know exactly what time Koroma went on or not, but I did have one friend say, "Think he's playing a too energetic right now. It's 12:30 and I brought a bunch (10+) of people with me and they are already tired!" -- again, don't want to wear out that crowd. But, still, MAJOR props on the final half hour. Transitioning into Marco V can be a tricky task because he can play a multitude of styles righ off the bat, and think it went well. Make note, Marco started off at 130bpm.

MarcoV, what can I say. Started off amazing and fed off Koroma perfect, played amazing, and ended only two hours later. I wasn't ready for him to end!!!

Couple highlights:

Him playing Deadmau5, WHOO! I love Deadmau5! Top of my list for producers right now. Funny story to this one. Near the begining of Marco's set and he was just working the crowd into gear, Blurr and I were discussing how he should play when he opens for A&B. He was asking if he should "play like this?" referring to how MarcoV was starting off the set. My response was, "yeah, somewhat like this (insert other stuff)....just play a lot of Deadmau5, that'd be perfect!" ... not 10 seconds after I say that comes in Deadmau 5 - Faxing Berlin, lol.

Him totally shocking everyone (me, at least) and playing Loops and Tings Relooped in the heart of his set! Everyone went bonkers. I thought it was coming in and was like nah, but then the track busted out to it's main components. BONKERS I tell you! Would think that if he played it at all, it'd be an encore or something.

Anyhow, AWESOME set.

Only heard about 45 minutes of Taj's set, but I must admit he totally made me forget that Marco only played two hours! Taj set continued the energy of Marco's PERFECTLY and had the crowd going nuts. Still going nuts when I had to leave around 4am. I really, really, really, wish I could have stayed because I think it was turning out to be one of my fav Taj sets ever!!! I am sure there have been some other great ones, but I rarely get to stay too long during Taj's sets. THen again, I think will every damn set is awesome as long as you keep playing Ferry Corsten - Brain Box.

BTW, I didn't even realize Brain Box is what I know as Ferry Corsten - The Race, which is def the original name of the track (or should I say, Ferry Corsten - The Race (Official Bavaria City Race 2007 Anthem)). I love the track because the synths remind of old school racing games on the NES/SNES/Genesis!!!

For the hell of it, music video of the track and be seen here...

Great night. Bring Marco back, for an extended set!!!

One of the highlights of my life is when MarcoV played almost 5 1/2 hours at Ten15...was only scheduled for 2 1/2-3 that night I believe. This was in 2004. Spundae Memorial Day Party (Sunday/Monday). And Marco didn't stop, security stopped him. It was after 6am!! Crowd was still crazy full too. Was hoping he'd just want to keep on playing like that night. Certainly an energetic crowd to(last)night and Marco really seemed to be into everything. Oh well. I'll blame his entourage, lol. Or maybe Marco got hand cramps for signing like 500 things it seemed like, lol.

I thought this was fuckin funnier than shit. I was happy to be up and about, recovering from last week, and just kinda going to person to person kidding on how to play.. I remember someone behind us screaming OMFG, F-ING deadmau5!!!! and we lol'ed over it. I've sampled Deadmau5, but havent really deciding on playing it in the mainroom. Hearing Marco play this and the bass that resonated from Faxing... expect to hear some Deadmau5 during my opening set for Above & Beyond.

Realizing now that I have less than 2 weeks to prepare, I have alot of tracks to research. I loved the way Marco built his set up. 130 BPM will probably be my starting point.

Man, I remember this night too. Awesome night. In retrospect to that night, I dont think anyone who was in the crowd last night was expecting Marco. I've never underestimated him since I have seen him overseas and here years ago... From his first track to the last, was a great set. I so was waiting for him to play Citidel. I wasent anticipating his ending either and hoped he would have played longer.

Marco's friends who attended, were super friendly also, Jacob I believe to be Marco's best friend (I didnt get his last name) commented on the 1015 and said they love the look and feel of the club, and how much interaction there is with the Dj and crowd. Both Jacobs wife and Marco's enjoyed themself greatly last night, and had no issues with anyone in the booth. Somehow, my conversation ended with Jacob last night with an invitation to DANCE VALLEY, to experience Marco there... If I do go, IM TAKING SOME OF YOU WITH ME!!!! ITS DANCE FUCKING VALLEY. Whats super awsome too is Marco's friends will be returning for Above & Beyond night and will be in attendance for my opening set too...

One reason I come to 1015 weekly even when Im not playing is still to continue watching Djs perform. Being on the other side of things this time around, I was happy to be that close to him last night, Watching how he worked the mixer, watching how he killed highs lows and mids... he definitely does things differently than headliners I seen in the past. Basically everything he did was spot on. Its not everyday that your right there in the booth with Marco V.

Tracks I have on my mind right now are:

The Thrillseekers Feat Gina Dootson "By Your Side" [Mind One Remix] (Adjusted)

Signalrunners "Electric Sheep" (Anjunabeats)

Randy Boyer & Eric Tadla "Stemcell" [Static Blue vs. Nisona Remix] (Flashover Recordings)

Damn missed this night and sooo wanted to go! Was so wiped out from a week of being sick after lovefest I played it safe and rested for ONE weekend in my life!!!

As for Deadmau5 I agree with ALL of you!!! ON FIRE RIGHT NOW!! I have even been playing these tracks successfully at the kiddies raves. I was worried at first because they are intelligent tracks that are not necessarily upfront and banging but they work marvolously! Jaded and Contact seem to be the rockers for me-Rizo can vouch for this!

Glad you all had a great night-see ya soon!!!

thanks, i had nothing to wear really and had just finished listening to sasha's essential mix where pete tong asks someone at the end (forgot who and still recovering to remember but maybe judge jules?) "what does your shirt say?" and he replies "I LIKE GIRLS" so i made it about 20 minutes before taking off to the city

man Marco V did not dissapoint! it was good seeing all the regulars there. It was my first night experiencing T's special punch, so needless to say, i was pretty wasted. But great music and cool people = great night out.

glad to see you're ok, rizo. got worried there for a second when we took you outside.

all in all, marco v was one of my favorite sets this year. it was everything i expected. if any of you get a chance to hear his combinations 3 cd, he lived up to that expectation.

went absolutely ballastic when he played remy & roland klinenberg - till ya drop (rene aemez remix), pretty sure a rework or what you need, and not exactly by deadmau5. like what dave said, deadmau5 is one of my favorite producers out there. although i wish faxin berlin would die already.

koroma, you played an awesome set and i don't care if you did play an anthem you mixed it up perfectly. you brought it down nicely right before marco v came on and you had the crowd going from start to finish. glad to be there to cheer you on!

i hope we see more of marco v out here. those who did not go really missed out. this and going to the trentemoller show really made up for me missing both after parties during lovefest week\

I'll sit here and agree with you that Koroma's set on its own was very good for the part I heard of it. I think tons of opener sets are awesome on their own. But as an opener, there is a job to do and there is a reason (and sometimes politics) to why there are things you do as an opener and things you don't do. And it goes for styles. I make a big deal about the BPM some openers edge up to, but in the end it's not about the BPM itself but the style the opener is playing along with the BPM. For example, if the headliner mainly plays melodic and/or vocal trance, the opener shouldn't dare get near 140bpm using that style of trance. Play a different style that in the aspect of the entire night goes well and the crowd enjoys, then I would say it's safe to edge to the mid-high 130s in the peak of your set (IE, 50-60 minutes before the headliner comes on) and then work on bringing it back down. A good example is when Taj and Dirtyheartz tag-teamed as an opener for Ferry months back at Ruby. They were playing good and hard, even playing Infected Mushroom - Becoming Insane, although it was played hella slow compared to its base 145bpm. Yeah, it was hard and fast but it was an rather different style than anything you'd hear from Ferry. And they played it like 45 minutes from the end of their set and they from that point brought it back down to a comfy setting for Ferry to continue off of. I remember Taj turning around and thinking I'd have a huge problem with it, but I never did. The style fit the moment of their set and they had PLENTY of time (a full 45+ minutes) to get hthings back down. I thought it was a good showcase of taking playing as an opener to edge, getting the crowd really into the night, and still setting Ferry up very well. I wouldn't trust many DJs to even try to do open nearly as powerful as they did and get things setup right int he end, but I thought their set that night was great. And even Spundae Founder, who will delay an headliners start time to get the opener to settle things down when necessary, thought they did a great job. OK, enough of that. Want to know what's ironic about this, I have seen Ferry arrive to the opener (not necessarily in SF) playing more housey and not nearly as fast, but just the banginess of the set caused a delay so the opener could ease things up. My point is that style has a lot to do with the quality of an opening set, not necessarily the BPM....damn, I'm getting way off track.

I've seen a couple instances where an opener was playing before their FAVORITE DJ but the opener thought they were playing too hard and just an improper style and that opener has not been allowed to open for that DJ since. And in both cases, I thought the opener's set on their own were AMAZING....but I do recall in one of the cases I was even telling someone that (even though it was a different style) they were playing a bit too hard and next thing I know the headliner shows up and then I see the promoter having to force the opener to slow things down causing the headliner to start about a half hour late and in the end cut his set time short by a half an hour. It sucked, but it was yet another sign of politics and how you simply need to make sure the headliner is happy.

But hey, at least up here in SF we aren't stuck with boring ass openers like I continuously see down in LA when I have seen trance acts there. ZzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZ. Even with the downshift (iow: new crop) of openers in SF which are still working on getting experience and learning to adjust, still beats most of the crap I've down in SoCal as far as trance openers. No offense LATAs :0

Continuing, anthems are tracks that have the most powerful force in getting the crowd's attention. The opener's job is to get the crowd geared up for the headliner and set him in and not to necessarily play tracks in the attempt to be the star. In most cases, it's totally an innocent decision when deciding to play the track. I personally love the anthems, don't get me wrong, but when an opener plays it, it's a spotlight track and in my eyes (and note, all my opinions are mainly based off of just scouting crowd reactions, headliner reactions, etc, and not necessarily personal taste) shouldn't be played. I remember a discussion between Taj and I about something like this one and he pretty much said, "to me, the headliner should be able to outshine anything the opener plays." And I agree, but what people have to learn as that there are a LOT of politics when it comes to dealing with headliners. And if the headliner happens to catch a certain track the opener is playing that they aren't happy isn't being played, it could cause issues in the future. I've seen it happen on many instances in the past. In the end, the best openers out there play tracks they find on their own and play zero anthems.

Also, be sure to know what remixes the headliners have done and don't play some remix of the same track (ie. Feels like Home), nor play tracks the headliner is known to play. It's one thing to hear various remixes of a track at a massive, but it should never be heard twice in a club if at all possible. This isn't the end of the world (unless it's a remix of an anthem the headliner also has a remix of), but should be avoid when at all possible.

I think when you know when a opener has done an f'n amazing job is when the headliner comes up to them and asks them WTF is the track they are playing because the love it and don't know it themselves. It shows the openers really scouts and finds his tracks on his/her own. Or he or she produced something himself the headliner loves. Case in point, Ferry asking Dirtyhertz for his remix of is Orbtal - Halcyon ON ON ON ON ON ON . Dirtyhertz, GIMME. It wasn't even mastered yet and it was teh awesome. You said you'd hand it over once it was mastered, and that was months ago! I think, lol.

Anyhow, my point to this whole post is to 100% not take anything I say as criticism of the set by itself, but more of just notes about what an opener has done that effects the night or could have possibly effected the night. It might not have effect that night in particular, but unless they are told of the consequences of what they are playing could have, they will never know how to take preventative measure. I want anyone who has the opportunity to opener for a major act to succeed and about 90% of the shit I say is based off of what I've seen in the past and experiences I've been around. An opener may be able to play what he wants and get away with it for some time, but one or two incidents where it effects the promoters or headliners mood can really fuck up your placement as an opener for major acts in this scene.

People might not see it, but politics in the EDM world are scary sometimes.

Now only if I would stop being a wuss and accept an opening gig sometime. Yeah, I'm a wuss and afraid I'll have to eat my own words because I do think in some cases the opener gets caught up in the night and gets beyond even what he or she was intending to play...so scared of falling into that trap.

Someone give me a recording device so I can record the sets I play out of Ableton via a mixer. So hard to get a macbook from work on the weekends these days and too poor to buy anything lol.

Hey Hey Everybody:

Wow what an amazing weekend.
First of all Id like to thank ALL OF YOU, and I do mean ALL OF YOU!! that came out this weekend for the Marco V event! Definitely a positive vibe in the club last night, and filled with lots of familiar faces. Big shots out to all the new T.A's. that I met this weekend and I'll see all of you next time!!!

It's been a long couple of weeks for all of us, and as you all know we've got more great headliners to come so rest up..Beaver & Rizo I hope your feeling better..

It's an absolute honor to have the opportunity to open for someone I grew up listening to on Radio OneMARCO V. WAS AMAZING.and I still cant believe Ive got to see him live WOW! As Dave mentioned, definitely have to bring him back! big thanks to everyone that left their comments, concerns, and feedback about the event, there were a lot of smiling faces throughout the night..and without all of us there it would not have been such a magical experience.

In addition as Dave also mentioned, there's definitely a slippery slope of politics to traverse when it comes to opening for internationals. I'm sure these lessons are learned with the test of time and as all of us locals gain from these experiences, we live to learn from it all and back it up with the beats we love!! I'm glad everyone enjoy the music and had a great time.next weekend's only five days away!!!

Side Note: provide loaf of bread for Rizo before he starts drinking, I was wondering where you disappeared to (lol)
