For the love of god, minimal isn't a genre. It's an approach to making music, and it's a route techno has gone down the last 3-4 years.

What this thread should say is "only geeks listen to techno", which was somewhat true about 15 years ago. Now techno nights are full of people who'd rather network with their friends and hog the bar than dance, and techno has changed accordingly.

As far as I'm concerned, the geeks and nutters need to be brought back to techno asap. Maybe then things would start to get interesting again.

edit: Yeh I can't wait 'till Jungle and Breakbeat become the fad and I get my 4/4 music back.

When Richie Hawtin was a bespectacled geek from Canada, he belted out massive tunes like FUSE - Substance Abuse and created headfuck soundtracks like Plastikman - Sheet One. These days he's a fashion icon with his own hair stylist, and his music is about as interesting as watching paint dry.

If that isn't evidence enough that the geeks need to come back, then I don't know what is.

not to get into the subject of can you do better but have you tried producing before? it takes more than 10 minutes per song. they dont just do the song and thats it, there is a lot more that goes into it.

Shit the bed, the age limit to join this board is in dire need of being raised. Good fucking grief.

@GILLES:

Do you know that being Minimal (in general) requires skills? Minimal painting, minimal music. It's not about doing as close to nothing as possible, but it's about doing the minimum of what it takes to make something (like music).

Many minimal artists deserve more respect than most trance producers nowadays.

Jungle and breakbeat are 4/4.

I feel like I made a dumb mistake but I still don't know how. Carte to explain. Isn't music meters measured by stressed beats.

If you look at it very technical you are 100% right.

I can understand that techno and minimal purists are mad that the genre is soo hyped up and that tech-house-with-some-minimal-elements are being qualified as minimal tracks.

However I still think the 'minimal' scene is healthy. Parties remain great, crowd is very enthusiastic (as you can see on the vids) and enough new quality releases. Personally I think DJ's like James Holden are rocking with a nice blend of minimal, 'minimal', neo-trance, acid and (real) electro.

On the downside, when you are at a minimal party you see a lot of people with the same clothes, drug-use (cocaine, Ketamine anyone?) hairstyle (richie should have copyrighted his own cut) and dance-shuffle. Maybe not the best direction minimal is going but this happenes to every musicgenre (non-edm included.)

I think people bitching about Minimal and 'Minimal' should stop, just hop on the next elite-bandwagon: Dubstep, Deephouse or Nu-rave.

4/4 is the time signature, not the style of beat. The straight kick is often called "four-to-the-floor" because it is four beats per bar, and in a 4/4 time signature there are only four beats to a bar. Everything in a 4/4 time signature happens in multiples of four. I highly suggest that you read up on music theory.

I'm definitely not bitching though I love 'minimal' but it's just not minimal. Mislabeling is not cool no matter how many people do it.

They're 4/4 time signature but not four-to-the-floor, i.e. there isn't necessarily a kickdrum on every beat.

You make it a point not to give anyone else a break, so why should anyone cut you any slack?

You already used that one, twat.

And telling someone to "stick to ______" when you're simply not intelligent enough to carry on a conversation with them reflects more poorly on you than them.

Why would I want to carry a conversation with you. All you do all day is come on TA and attack me. Doesn't reflect too good on yourself either, buddy.
