Don't come here, or to any other other country, unless you're willing to be a part of it.
It's like joining a sporting team and then purposely not playing, just standing there in the middle of the game (crap analogy I know).
yeah lol...that analogy doesn't really work
how about...
friend crashing at your place
its cool for just a little bit (vacationers etc), but once it starts to be a permanent thing, dude better help the fuck out with the rent
wait
that analogy wasn't much better :/

We don't get thieves in Australia, we're too happy go lucky.
Besides, there's nothing for said thief to steal.

if immigrants to this country dont want to speak english, i dont care. as long as theyre not driving cabs or in call centres etc
to be honest, id probably be too lazy to learn another language that i thought would be especially difficult to learn. and english is meant to be pretty difficult- just look how many americans struggle with it everyday!
there can be significant social cohesion problems with immigrants that dont learn the language. its pretty much the biggest barrier there is. endemic poverty, unemployment and crime are a serious possibility due to intense social isolation.
either way, a lot of immigrants have had a hard time so id prefer giving them a little slack.

I wasn't stating that, it was a question asked in the 'quiz'. My post referres to the possible answer of "only if everyone born here has to pass the test too." I probably should have put it as a quote to avoid confuzzlement.
[To state my thoughts on the subject, I think that US citizens should be held to higher-than-current standards as to their knowledge of government and its processes as well as their ability to speak english (because too many suck at it). I do not think that someone applying for citizenship should be held to a HIGHER standard than that. The possible answer to the quiz implies a situation where someone applying for citizenship is held to a higher standard, hence my post. Having been born as a US citizen, I have very little knowledge of the citizenship process so I don't know what standards, if any, there are.]

I think I agree with that, but I'm too tired to think it through right now. Stockton has a fairly bad reputation when it comes to such issues.
My question for the Australians here is, when you've been discussing the extent to which immigrants must go to fit into society, are you talking about illegals or those who have become citizens?
I ask this because I wonder how your situation compares to ours. Border jumpers can walk into a DMV (dept. of motor vehicles) and get a driver licence. DMV, by law, can't report their illegal status to the INS (immigration and naturalization service). Then they can vote for politicians (I'll leave the party out, that's not what I'm discussing here, nor do I want to.) who pander to them by making it legal to get a driver's licence without being reported and to vote. They can use all the government resources that citizens get taxed for and they don't pay a dime in taxes.
Anyway, what are "poms?" I couldn't quite pin it down from context.

Englishmen.
It's a semi-derogatory but playful term that Australians use.

it actually stands for 'Prisoner Of her Majesty' and originally denoted the first settler convicts. somehow we changed it around!
