I've yet to see that movie. Judging by what I just watched, this is the next movie I MUST see. Camera work and scenery resembles that of Saving Private Ryan. Thanks for the clip. Posted by cmay119 on Nov-15-2007 02:31:

I thought it was phenomenal - very existentialist with some moments of intense suspense. Cuaron is one of my favorite directors. That's actually probably my third favorite scene from the movie, but the others weren't on youtube.

After seeing that scene. I wen't out tonight and rented the movie. It's brilliant. Such a melancholy movie. Very 1984-esque. Question for you though (I'll probably have to rewatch to take it all in), is the country in a state of Martial Law? Or is there still a governing body that's just neglected from the story line?

Hmmm, has anyone posted anything from Meet The Feebles yet?

Martial law is probably about right. The book is supposed to address more of the particulars, but I haven't read it yet. It has a completely different take on the Fishes too I've heard. But basically I think the premise is that the British government passes a bunch of wide-sweeping security measures to address the immigration problem. Clive Owen is a government bureaucrat of some form or another, so the government does exist in more than a military capacity, it just isn't really shown in the movie. Glad you liked it!

The mayhem is just unreal in that scene. Up there with Godfather among my favourite movies ever.

Yeah. The two things from the film which are expanded greatly in the book are Owen's quote "The world's gone to shit" and a brief commercial seen on the trains(?) TV. The commercial displays the names of major cities along with images of destruction.
Religious extremists set off a nuclear device in New York and a massive bio/chemical attack in Tokyo, along with international famine and disease. The entire world became a mess of riots and small family tribes (de-civilized).
"But Britian still stands!" Britain is the last remaining civilization on Earth (it seems to be a random choice by the author, no particular reason why it was the only one to survive). The government, as a means to preserve this state, martial law to keep immigrants (disease ridden refugees) out. To keep civility, the government asks people to continue daily life (waged labor)

all science aside, seeing this movie in the theatres back in 1996 was quite possibly one of the best movie experiences i've ever had. the opening scene alone, i thought i was going to have a heart attack it was pumping so hard, my hands were glued to the seats, and i was even sweating a little.
one of the biggest adrenoline rushes i've ever had.
(again, science aside, great movie).

The ending to Fight Club where the credit buildings are falling and The Narrator and Marla are standing there, holding hands.
I get shivers every time.
NSFW at the very end.

So for the filming of this scene, harrison ford was quite sick with dysentery. He couldn't spend any time away from his trailer, basically. So, instead of some big scene that was originally planned, they improvised to make it quick and it became one of the funniest.
