God I hate eating food at the theatre.

I's a fucking movie. Why are you eating while watching a movie? FOCUS.

i usually chow down on the popcorn during previews. by the time the movie starts, its cold

I admit, I went to see a movie alone like twice. I don't think its a social experience necessarily, depends on a movie I guess . Comedy with friends is great, but serious movies require more attention, and other people can be a distraction, especially if someone can't keep their mouth shut

I usually grab a bite before going in. You can drop more on snacks than the ticket itself...another reason I dislike the movies.

The mark up on the food and drinks has to be at least 500%. I'd say more than that.

From what I have been told about several theatres, the theatre, itself, is funded solely on food sales and whatever money that production companies want to supply them with to showcase their films. All ticket revenue goes directly to the production company.

Naturally, many theatres share namesakes with these companies - United Artist Theatres, for example - and so might get a cut off of ticket sales in a roundabout way, but there is a reason why food prices are so high at the counters there.

Haha yeah, its outrageous... and to top it off, it seems like they raise the concession prices here at the local AMC theatre 50 cents about every 6 months

Last time i went to the movies i asked them why the prices are outrageous. That's where the theatre makes their money. They get no profit from ticket sales.

It's true. Theaters make 95% of their revenue on concessions. It's actually a remarkably non-profitable industry. You can bring in 1000 people on a Friday night, but if nobody buys popcorn you're still going to go out of business pretty quickly.
