I never did.

I usually find if my order is less than $50US i never get charged.

right, because custom products are usually shared between people. There not made to an individuals specification.

Yes.

Im not trying to sell my old plugs here.

If someone was interested in purchasing a (new) pair, i would obviously have an impression of their ear taken.

Is there anything special about the custom earplugs? by that I mean are they designed to lower the dB without muffling resolution? I tried using my Shure E4c's once as earplugs, and they worked great, but I feel like it suppressed some of the higher notes to much.

The ones I have, which are just like the etymotics, have two different filters. One for lower frequencies, and one for higher frequencies.

infinity HiGH got 'em for me at Long & McQuade...they're called 'Vater'.

I haven't used them yet so I don't know how well they work, but Pete says they work great.

Customs:

1) Fit the ear perfectly - making them more comfortable and offering greater level of sound reduction (they are more "safe").

2) The filters on customs attenuate all frequencies an equal amount (akin to only turning down the volume on your stereo).

Regular (non-custom filter) earplugs do not attenuate evenly - so you get sound distortion (akin to playing with your EQ and volume knob on the stereo).

It's not that I don't believe you, but do you have a source for that? I want to read up more on it.

Sure - according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency:

A safe average of noise for a 24-hour day is 70 dB, Any noise that reaches 85 dB or more can damage your hearing.

Does anyone have recommendations for ear plugs for DJs? The Er-20s are obviously great, but b/c they stick out of your ear, I don't see that being too useful when DJing. Something other than the expensive custom ones...
