I also use FL Studio (version 8) btw, since the piano roll in FL Studio beats all other piano rolls in my opinion. And the playlist / pattern functions have been updated as well in the new version.
People who say flstudio is crap don't know what they're talking about...

Is FL8 backwards compatible, with for example an FL7 project file?

no.

wrong.

files are guaranteed to be forwards compatible only. you may be lucky, but generally any file you edit significantly in FL 8 will not go back into FL 7 without loss.

Er, what the fuck are you on about. FL8 is backwards compatable because it can open FL7 files, thats what backward compatable means, he never said that FL7 could open FL8 files...

you're wrong.
Wikipedia...

quote:
If a newer software version cannot save files that can be read by the older version it is not backward compatible with the older version, although it may provide an irreversible upgrade capability for the old files.

i thought it was obvious that fl7 files can go into fl8. i assumed he was asking so that if he tries FL8 he can still go back to FL7 with the same project files...

What you're talking about, opening FL8 files in FL7, is forward compatibility, and its pretty obvious that's not going to work.

Maybe an application isn't considered 100% backward compatible unless it can save files in the previous versions format, but the idea of FL8 opening FL7 files is still a question of backward compatibility and has nothing to do with forward compatibility...

Um dude. Forward compatibility is opening FL8 files in FL7. He is asking if its it backward compatible which means opening FL7 and previous versions files in FL8.

And don't tell me I'm wrong because think about Playstation 2. It was BACKWARD compatible with all PS1 games.

Backward compatibility means that the newer version still supports the older versions software & files.

Forward compatibility means that the older version will support the newer versions software & files which is rarely ever the case.

true. by definition forward compatibility is the program being able to ignore unrecognised data... but it is often used in the context i did. eg. on the steinberg website it says cubase files are "forward compatible only" (eg. from sx3 to 4). bit of a bastardisation, meh.

LMAO! I got to college dude, if I had a 100$ to throw out like that I'd put it towards my broken midi keyboard.

Your little baby Reason arsenal couldn't make a cricket jump.
While my FL Studio mushroom cloud laying skills would cause cricket genocide.
But I'll def take you up on an offer, for rep sake.

I say we start the battle through http://www.random.org/coins/
we flip a coin, and the loser produces one 4 bar melody that BOTH must remix into a trance track.

I'll check that place you put cuz we need some way of making rules, possibly better than the ones I thought of, or we let the forum make rules.
Either way complete ownership will be mine, SON. =]

Alright that site actually seems perfect, never even heard of it before. Under those terms I might be able to get the cash if theres no chance of you backing out, which is highly likely for anyone delusional enough to think they could beat me.

no! leave those innocent crickets alone!

FL: Top Notch Workflow via the most user-friendly playlist/pattern editing and piano roll.

Simply thats what makes it attractive to anyone. But what was said like vagillion times already, its the user, not the DAW.

and features

Posted by theartfulducker on May-01-2008 02:40:

They all have basically the same features as well. What you can do with one you can do with another.
Apart from Ableton i guess... you can mix on that.

You can use an Access TI, Logic, Cubase or w/e the fvck you want.
I checked out your myspace and obviosuly I can deny you have talent.

First I need to know is that your shit?
If it is, you lack serious ability to organize a simple track.

The sounds are NOT bad, you don't seem to know how to make transitions, on a fundamental level.

You rape the shit out of a lot of the basics of music theory. I'm not even getting into the whole "I'll own you" shit, but you just can't par with me, period.
