-- Review: The "New Basement" - LOCO, Sunday morning
Pages (5): « 1 2 3 [4] 5 »
So on Sunday mornings, now ppl can either go to Church or go Loco.
What choices! haha
I'm LOCCOOOOO essay!!!..
Checked this place out after Guv on Saturday night.
The good:
The venue itself is pretty decent. Nice to see all the couches spread around.
The location is also a plus. It's close to a 24 hour convenient store, and even closer to a pizza pizza that opens at (I assume) 11AM.
Security seemed to be really nice
The bad:
The black lights above the dance floor. Maybe I just like a really dark dance floor now because of CZ. I felt like I was in china town.
The sound system is nowhere near as good at CZ's. It was actually pretty distorted when I originally shorted up.
I was there until 830AM and the crowd was still at a max of 50-60 people. I think they need to bring the cover down to at least 10 bucks to try and steal CZ's crowd. Once they have established themselves and have a decent crowd coming in on a regular basis, then maybe bring the cover up. As of now this place is NOT worth the same cover as CZ.
The ugly:
Ni-CD mentioned a 3 to 1 girl to guy ratio last week. This week must've been 20 to 1 in favour of the guys.
The music was weak. Chastise me if you want, but I was not impressed with the music at all. DJ Rudee (I think) was stuck in beatport's top 10 from 4-6 months ago. There was a set of about 10 tracks that I knew right away and have already been played into the ground (thus boring). I felt bad for the guy when someone came up to talk to him during a mix and he completely trainwrecked. The dj that came on afterwards was like a bad version of The Roaches. He completely killed the small dance floor that Rudee had going. At one point the volume went way up making the people I was with plug their ears for several minutes (thankfully I had my ER-20s on). Maybe I'm just used to the incredibly high standards that CZ sets in terms of music selection, but the dj lineup needs work here. I'm basing this on the first two djs, which I admit is not enough to judge the whole lineup.. but fuck, you should have your strongest talent first thing in the morning. That's primetime for after-after hours.
Final thoughts:
This place has potential, but it needs work in the music dept and a drop in cover for at least the first 6 months. I don't think anyone in their right mind would pay the same price to go to the new basement when CZ is a 5 minute drive away (unless they have a problem with zone). Just before I called it night/morning my friend Aly asked me what I thought of the place. I said it was alright. I asked her what she thought and she said the same and then we both said at the same time "it's no zone". I likely won't be returning to this place for several months or until it's established.

Kotsy--thorough review man! Did you go today? I wonder if afterhours today are weak because of people anticipating the monday holiday mayhem? I'm shooting down to basement tomorrow morning for the madness, and then perhaps over to zone afterwards (madness, i say, madness!).
Rudee was great when I was there last, but the real talent I was there to see was Paranoid Jack... dude, you just don't get stronger than that...this guy is legendary in Toronto.
Definitely agree that it has lots of potential and some ways to go. Tomorrow will be my third time there, so it'll be nice to establish an average. Yeah, the system in zone sounds better to me too...but zone sounds better to me than a lot of places, heh. Those ear plugs are a lifesaver...i have a pair too.
ugh, i better get back to work and hit the hay for the early morning tunage.

thinking of doing zone after basement tomorrow

Finally one positive thing of her moving away, lol
Decided to check out the basement Sunday morning.. worst decision ever. Honestly.. if I never go back I don't care. Thank god we didn't have to pay [thanks Krystle!] otherwise I would have been seriously annoyed with wasting 20$ to get in.
The layout of the place reminds me of a school gym cut in half, roof lowered and a black light in the middle. The sound system was blah at best, the place was empty and the music was nothing impressive. I stayed for a little over an hour, and spent most of the time outside smoking, before heading over to the zone. I doubt I'll go back unless something spectacular happens.
The couches are comfy [nice to chill on while waiting for your ride] and the staff is nice so I cant complain about that.. except for the sketchbag at the bar. I asked for change for a 50 so I could grab a cab to zone and it took him 20 minutes to get it for me. He took my money then proceeded to pour drinks for people who wern't even at the bar. Idiot. I had to yell at him twice to get my change so that obviously didn't make things better.
You shouldnt have to be high to enjoy after hours and I dont think I could have lasted another minute sober in that place.
I do recommend everyone checks it out for themselves.. But I wont go out of my way to lure people in.

As it starts to fill up on weekends, I'm sure there will be rising concern regarding the air quality. Nothing compares to zone on new years day though... it was like walking through a wall of water, everywhere you went. Unreal. Portable oxygen is a great idea. |

I can guarantee you will have fun
been twice and have always enjoyed the party and the vibe
we were there monday morning for the return of Addy to the AM timeslot. Good fucking times!!! the place was busy which was great to see and the crowd was a decent one.
Was a pleasant suprise seeing Neeta and Jeff along with a host of familiar faces.
What gets me every time however is the staff at this place. Down to earth however able to handle issues if and when they arise. It closed early again but thats because the crowd thinned out considerably just past 12 or so.
i will be back
